Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Miscellanies, Vol. 3 An Address Delivered At The Town Hall, Birmingham (October 5, 1876), By The Writer, As President Of The Midland Institute. The proceedings which have now been brought satisfactorily to an end are of a kind which nobody who has sensibility as well as sense can take a part in without some emotion. An illustrious French philosopher who happened to be an examiner of candidates for admission to the Polytechnic School, once confessed that, when a youth came before him eager to do his best, competently taught, and of an apt intelligence, he needed all his self-control to press back the tears from his eyes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Miscellanies, Vol. 1 A French writer has recently published a careful and interesting volume on the famous events which ended in the overthrow of Robespierre and the close of the Reign of Terror. These events are known in the historic calendar as the Revolution of Thermidor in the Year II. After the fall of the monarchy, the Convention decided that the year should begin with the autumnal equinox, and that the enumeration should date from the birth of the Republic. The Year I. opens on September 22, 1792; the Year II. opens on the same day of 1793. The month of Thermidor begins on July 19. The memorable Ninth Thermidor therefore corresponds to July 27, 1794. This has commonly been taken as the date of the commencement of a counter-revolution, and in one sense it was so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Miscellanies: First Series NE of the most important phases of French thought in the great century of its illumination is only thoroughly intel ligible, on condition that in studying it we keep constantly in mind the eloquence, force, and genius of Pascal. He was the greatest and most influential representative of that way of viewing human nature and its circumstances, which it was one of the characteristic glories of the eighteenth century to have rebelled against and rejected. More than a hundred years after the publication of the Pense'es, Condorcet thought it worth while to prepare a new edition of them, with annotations pro testing, not without a certain unwonted deference of tone, against Pascal's doctrine of the base and desperate estate of man. Voltaire also had them reprinted with notes of his own, written in the same spirit of vivacious deprecation, which we may be sure would have been even more vivacious, if Voltaire had not remembered that he. Was speaking of the mightiest of the enemies of the Jesuits. Apart from formal and specific dissents like these, all the writers who had drunk most deeply of the spirit of the eighteenth century, lived in a constant ferment of revolt against the clear witted and vigorous thinker of the century before, who had clothed mere theological mys teries with the force and importance of strongly entrenched propositions in a consistent philosophy. This book was released on 2017-05-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical and Critical Miscellanies The subject of the present memoir affords an almost solitary example, at this period, of a. Scholar, in the enlarged ap lication of the term, who cultivated letters as a distinct and exclusive profession, resting his means of support, as well as his fame, on h1s success; and who, as a writer of fiction, is still farther entitled to credit for having quitted the beaten grounds of the Old Country, and sought his subjects in the untried wilderness of his own. The particulars of his unostentatious life have been collected with suffi cient industry by his friend, Mr. William Dunlap, to whom our native literature is under such large obligations for the extent and fidelity of his re searches. We will select a few of the most prom inent incidents from a mass of miscellaneous fragments and literary lumber with which his work is somewhat encumbered. It were to be wished that, in the place of some of them, more cupious extracts had been substituted for his journal and correspondence, which, doubtless, in this as in other cases, must afford the most interesting, as well as an thcntic materials for biography. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical and Critical Miscellanies, Vol. 2 The vast amount of similar contributions in France during the last century, which, in the shape of letters and anecdotes, as well as memoirs, have made us as intimately acquainted with the internal movements of society in Paris, under all its aspects, literary, fashionable, and political, as if they had passed in review before our own eyes. The French have been remarked for their excel lence in narrative ever since the times of the fabliaux and the old Norman romances. Some what of their success in this way may be imputed to the structure of their language, whose general currency, and whose peculiar fitness for prose composition, have been noticed from a very early period. Brunetto Latini, the master of Dante, wrote his Tesoro in French, in preference to his own tongue, as far back as the middle of the thirteenth century, on the ground that its speech was the most universal and most delectable of all the dialects of Europe. And Dante asserts in his treatise on Vulgar Eloquence that the superiority of the French consists in its adaptation, by means of its facility and agreeableness, to narratives in prose. Much of the wild, artless grace, the naivete, which characterized it in its infancy, has been gradually polished away by fastidious critics, and can scarcely be said to have survived Marot and Montaigne. But the lan guage has gained considerably in perspicuity, pre cision, and simplicity of construction, to which the jealous labors of the French Academy must be admitted to have contributed essentially. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanies, Critical, Imaginative, and Juridical, 1855, Vol. 1 of 2: Contributed to Blackwood's Magazine These volumes contain such of the Author's contributions to Blackwood's Magazine, as appeared to deal with subjects of general, intrinsic, and permanent interest and importance. Most of them were originally written with a view to subsequent separate publication; and some have cost the Author great pains, alike in the writing and revision. The paper, however, entitled "The Mystery of Murder, and its Defence," did not appear in Blackwoods Magazine, but in the quarterly Law Review, and is included in these "Miscellanies," for reasons stated in a note subjoined to the commencement of the paper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanies, Critical, Imaginative, and Juridical, Vol. 2 of 2: Contributed to Blackwood's Magazine On the ensuing Saturday, however, the Examiner re printed its two articles of the 27th June and the 11th July 1840, containing the original charges, professing deliberately to te-afirm them; accusing Mr Phillips of having done his best to evade every charge specifically brought against him by the Ermniner and offering conclusive evidence of the truth of those charges, in the shape of extracts from the Times newspaper, which had reported the proceedings out of which the accusation against Mr Phillips originated. The Examiner, doubtless irritated by the vehement and scornful tone of Mr Phillips' letter, expressed its re aflirmed charges in very bitter terms; and also in the ensuing two numbers inserted extracts from several other newspapers; complaining also of the precipitancy of fellow-j ournalists in authenticating a charge of calumny against it, without having paused for its rejoinder, but presumed Mr Phillips' answer complete. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 11 HE essays and lectures contained in the following pages were not included by Emerson himself in any volume of his works, but they must not, on that account be slighted. Indeed, many of them found a place in the last volumes of the posthumous collected edition, and have therefore some sort of official sanction. A few - for instance, The Senses and the Soul, the editorial preface to the Dial, and the essay on Saadi are now for the first time reprinted. The pieces vary considerably in quality, but they are far too good to be lost, and a handy collection like the present should be welcome to all admirers of the greater and better known works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 1 of 2 'Truth is stranger than fiction.' A trite remark. We all say it, again and again: but how few of us believe it! How few of us, when we read the history of heroical times and heroical men, take the story simply as it stands. On the contrary, we try to explain it away; to prove it all not to have been so very wonderful: to impute accident, circumstance, mean and commonplace motives; to lower every story down to the level of our own littleness, or what we (unjustly to ourselves, and to the God who is near us all) choose to consider our level; to rationalize away all the wonders, till we make them at last impossible, and give up caring to believe them; and prove to our own melancholy satisfaction that Alexander conquered the world with a pin, in his sleep, by accident. And yet in this mood, as in most, there is a sort of left-handed truth involved. These heroes are not so far removed from us, after all.
