Book Local Approach to Fracture

Download or read book Local Approach to Fracture written by Jacques Besson and published by Presses des MINES. This book was released on 2006 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving the structural integrity together with the performance (weight, time to failure,...) of structures requires a persisting effort in the field of mechanics of materials and structures. This can be achieved by a better understanding of the relationships between microscopic mechanisms and the macroscopic material behavior and structural response with respect to damage and fracture. This improvement strategy of materials, structures and assement methods can be described as local approach to fracture. The local approach to fracture is an active research field. Initially developped in the context of steel structures (pressure vessels), its application domain has become wider and now deals with various kinds of materials (metallic alloys, metal matrix composites, polymers, elastomers, concrete) as well as various physical deformation and damage mechanisms (plasticity, creep, fatigue, ductile fracture, brittle fracture, ...). This volume contains the proceedings on an international conference dedicated to these issues.

Book Fracture Toughness Assessment of Present and Future Pressure Vessel Materials Based on Charpy Impact Energy and Yield Strength

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Assessment of Present and Future Pressure Vessel Materials Based on Charpy Impact Energy and Yield Strength written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several medium and high strength alloys, including AF1410, Inconel 718, PH 13-8 Mo stainless steel, and ASm(A723 high strength low alloy steel, have been heat treated to various strength and toughness levels and evaluated for correlations between fracture toughness and charpy impact energy. The correlations investigated included those by Roffe-Novak and Ault-Wald-Bertolo. previous work by Kapp and Underwood suggests that for A723 steel, the Rolfe-Novak correlation predicts the fracture toughness reasonably well. One potential limitation of their study was that the charpy impact energy was measured at -40 deg f, whereas the toughness was evaluated at room temperature. This study evaluates Charpy impact energy and toughness at both room temperature and at -40 deg F and considers both when utilizing these correlations. Results of this study indicate that the Rolfe-Novak correlation over-predicts the measured fracture toughness at room temperature, and tends to underpredict the measured fracture toughness at 40 deg F. The Ault-Wald-Bertolo correlation, in all but one instance, was a conservative estimate of the measured fracture toughness of the material at both room temperature and 40 deg F. Utilizing the results presented in this study, it is recommended that if a correlation is necessary for estimating the toughness of any of the materials, the Ault-Wald-Bertolo correlation will result in a conservative estimate of toughness. Book Correlation Between Fracture Toughness Charpy V notch Impact Energy and Yield Strength for ASTM A723 Steel

Download or read book Correlation Between Fracture Toughness Charpy V notch Impact Energy and Yield Strength for ASTM A723 Steel written by J. A. Kapp and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large quantity of data for ASTM A723 steel correlating yield strength, Charpy impact energy, and fracture toughness has been compared with the Rolfe-Novak-Barsom correlation. The general conclusion is that this correlation is conservative, because if we estimate fracture toughness from Charpy impact energy measurements, the estimated toughness is less than the measured value. The data may be somewhat questionable, however, because the fracture toughness and Charpy impact energy measurements were taken at different temperatures. The results indicate that for correlation purposes, the Rolfe- Novak-Barsom relationship is an adequate estimate of fracture toughness based on Charpy impact energy and yield strength measurements. Book From Charpy to Present Impact Testing

Download or read book From Charpy to Present Impact Testing written by D. Francois and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-18 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Charpy to Present Impact Testing contains 52 peer-reviewed papers selected from those presented at the Charpy Centenary Conference held in Poitiers, France, 2-5 October 2001. The name of Charpy remains associated with impact testing on notched specimens. At a time when many steam engines exploded, engineers were preoccupied with studying the resistance of steels to impact loading. The Charpy test has provided invaluable indications on the impact properties of materials. It revealed the brittle ductile transition of ferritic steels. The Charpy test is able to provide more quantitative results by instrumenting the striker, which allows the evolution of the applied load during the impact to be determined. The Charpy test is of great importance to evaluate the embrittlement of steels by irradiation in nuclear reactors. Progress in computer programming has allowed for a computer model of the test to be developed; a difficult task in view of its dynamic, three dimensional, adiabatic nature. Together with precise observations of the processes of fracture, this opens the possibility of transferring quantitatively the results of Charpy tests to real components. This test has also been extended to materials other than steels, and is also frequently used to test polymeric materials. Thus the Charpy test is a tool of great importance and is still at the root of a number of investigations; this is the reason why it was felt that the centenary of the Charpy test had to be celebrated. The Société Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux decided to organise an international conference which was put under the auspices of the European Society for the Integrity of Structures (ESIS). This Charpy Centenary Conference (CCC 2001) was held in Poitiers, at Futuroscope in October 2001. More than 150 participants from 17 countries took part in the discussions and about one hundred presentations were given. An exhibition of equipment showed, not only present day testing machines, but also one of the first Charpy pendulums, brought all the way from Imperial College in London. From Charpy to Present Impact Testing puts together a number of significant contributions. They are classified into 6 headings: •Keynote lectures,•Micromechanisms,•Polymers,•Testing procedures,•Applications,•Modelling.

Book Charpy Absorbed Energy and JIc as Measures of Cryogenic Fracture Toughness

Download or read book Charpy Absorbed Energy and JIc as Measures of Cryogenic Fracture Toughness written by IS. Hwang and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we present experimental comparisons between the critical energy line integral (JIc) and Charpy absorbed energy (Cv) at 4 and 77 K for materials ranging from fully austenitic steels to ferritic steels. At 4 K the correlation between JIc and Cv is weak, indicating that Cv is a poor indicator of static fracture roughness at this temperature. At 77 K, a good correlation exists between JIc and Cv. A good correlation is also observed between JIc at 77 K and Cv at 4 K. The results are explained by the large temperature rise during the Charpy rest. Further evidence of the temperature rise is the marginal change in Cv between 4 and 77 K and the disparity in fracture modes between Charpy and fracture mechanics specimens. For c stainless steels, Cv changed little from 4 to 77 K whereas JIc increased significantly. For ferritic steels, Cv increased in proportion to JIc from 4 to 77 K. Especially in steels with low nickel contents, fracture surfaces of Charpy specimens revealed higher ductility than those of fracture mechanics test specimens. The results qualitatively support the predicted temperature rises to 130 and 150 K for crack initiation during Charpy tests at 4 and 77 K, respectively. Due to a wide variation in roughness response to temperature rise, the Cv-based regulatory criteria developed for one group of alloys will have no validity when applied to another group. Therefore the Charpy test near absolute zero should not be regarded as a measure of the static fracture resistance. Alternative simplified methods of cryogenic fracture toughness are suggested.
