Download or read book The StarSight Project written by S. P. Perone and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-11 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A horrible terrorist strike…referred to as Operation Deadly Rainby the al-Qa’eda …is about to be launched against the United States during the holiday season, with perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives at stake. An artificial intelligence program is nearly completed that might predict in advance when, where, and how this attack might occur. When the CIA receives fragmentary warnings of the upcoming attack, the university researchers secretly developing this program…called “StarSight”…are abruptly plucked from their comfortable academic posts and thrust into the frontline of the war on terrorism. The stage is set for savage conflict: Professor Tony Shane, his beautiful research associate, Sarah, and a handful of university co-workers are condemned by their academic colleagues for conducting a secret project for the CIA. At the same time, they are exposed to deadly attempts by terrorist agents to sabotage their work. Unknown to the CIA and Senator Moorhouse, who is coordinating the StarSight project, the person responsible for Deadly Rain…and ruthlessly attempting to terminate StarSight … is himself a wealthy and respected American citizen and close friend of the Senator and his wife. With political intrigue permeating university and government circles alike, this adventure takes the reader from the comfort of the “halls of ivy” to the exotic settings of San Francisco, Zurich, Washington, and the Italian Riviera. Despite the personal trials of the researchers, politicians, and terrorists that unfold during this pre-holiday period, the purposeful efforts of the StarSight team to prevent the terrorist attack build to a heart-stopping climax.
Download or read book RF 101 Voodoo Units in Combat written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McDonnell's F-101 Voodoo series was in many ways the most interesting of the 'Century Series' fighter programmes of the 1950s, partly because the type's design and intended mission changed radically during a 40-year career. Originally designed as a fighter-bomber, it was converted to be a reconnaissance aircraft, serving alongside the U-2 and RF-8 Crusaders during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. Although it gained a reputation as a difficult aircraft to handle, the jet's supersonic speed and newly-developed camera suite enabled it to conduct vital low-altitude photo-reconnaissance missions over heavily-defended target areas. In combat, the RF 101 was usually 'first in-last out' for strike missions. This made it a ready target, with a solo aircraft flying straight and level to gather target photo evidence at low-altitude offering enemy gunners plenty of opportunity to shoot the Voodoo down. This study tells the combat stories of this extraordinary aircraft, highlighting the difficulty of the missions on which it was sent and the courage of its pilots.

Download or read book Alaska Warbird Survivors 2002 written by Harold A. Skaarup and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-12-16 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple checklist on where to find the surviving retired military aircraft that are preserved in the state of Alaska. The majority of the Alaska Warbird Survivors can be viewed at Elmendorf AFB; Eielson AFB; Kulis ANG Base; in the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum in Anchorage; in the Alaskaland Pioneer Air Museum in Fairbanks; Healy, Denali Wings; and at Palmer, in the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry. Various gate guardians are also listed. The museum staffs and volunteer organizations in Alaska have done a particularly good job of preserving the great variety of American combat veteran aircraft, illustrated here. Hopefully, as more aircraft are recovered from their crash sites in the bush and restored, traded or brought back from private owners, that they too will be added to the record. The book lists the aircraft alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. This list is also appended with a brief summary of the aircraft presently on display within the state and a bit of its history in the US military.
Download or read book Flight from Eden written by Steven Cassedy and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Cassedy takes aim at two of the most enduring myths of modern criticism: that it is secular, and that it is new and autonomous. He argues that though modern criticism is often forbiddingly scientific and technical, the modern critic remains something of a mystic. Every school of modern criticism—from structuralism to postmodern criticism—rests on a faith in an "Eden," an irreducible essence, a myth, like the common myth that there is an intrinsic distinction between "poetic" language and "ordinary" language. The modern critic attempts to abandon all mystical faith; this is the "flight from Eden." But it is always in vain. It is traditionally assumed that modern literary criticism and theory came from France, and relatively recently. In fact, according to Cassedy, the entire modern critical consciousness was already formed by the early twentieth century in the minds of writers who were primarily neither professional critics nor philosophers, but poets. Some were French (Mallarmé, and Valéry); others were not (Rilke, Bely, and the Russian avant-garde poet Velimir Khlebnikov). In them we find the same Edenic faith, the same effort to abandon it, and the same failure of that effort. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1990.

This handbook is designed to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple locating guide on where to find Alabamas retired warbirds within the state. Many of the aircraft can be found in the Southern Museum of Flight, Birmingham; the United States Army Aviation Museum; the US Space and Rocket Center at Huntsville; Battleship Memorial Park at Mobile; Maxwell AFB Park at Montgomery; or in the hands of private owners and collectors. The handbook provides photographs of many of the aircraft preserved in Alabama, along with a brief description and history of its service within the US armed forces. The aircraft are listed alphabetically by manufacturer, number and aircraft type. Famous aircraft found on display in Alabama include the Lockheed A-12 Blackbird, and a number of very rare flying machines such as the gigantic one of a kind Boeing Vertol XCH-62 Heavy Lift Helicopter not found in other aviation museums.

Download or read book History of the 101st Airborne Division written by Colonel Robert E. Jones and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of the 101st Airborne Division is the epic story of the Division from its activation in August 1942 through the completion of Operation Desert Storm in April 1991. The Division’s progression through the sky took decades of hard work and tens of thousands of dedicated soldiers. In World War II, the 101st became the first American troops to set foot in occupied France, when, on 6 June 1944, its paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines, clearing the way for the 4th Infantry Division landing on Utah Beach. The Division would become famous for its work in Holland during Operation Market Garden, and for its successful defense of Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. In Vietnam, the “Screaming Eagles” engaged in battle from 1965 to 1972, when they began their evolution to Air Mobile by deploying by helicopter. In the Gulf War, the Division fired the first shots of Operation Desert Storm by destroying Iraqi radar sites, and during ground war of the operation, they made the longest and largest air assault in history. In every engagement and during the training periods in between, the 101st Airborne Division has honored the words of its first commander, General William C. Lee, that it has a “rendezvous with destiny.” This book is a fitting record of that history, and of the men who are proud to be called “Screaming Eagles.”
