Download or read book The History of Blood Transfusion in Sub Saharan Africa written by William H. Schneider and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first extensive study of the practice of blood transfusion in Africa traces the history of one of the most important therapies in modern medicine from the period of colonial rule to independence and the AIDS epidemic. The introduction of transfusion held great promise for improving health, but like most new medical practices, transfusion needed to be adapted to the needs of sub-Saharan Africa, for which there was no analogous treatment in traditional African medicine. This otherwise beneficent medical procedure also created a “royal road” for microorganisms, and thus played a central part in the emergence of human immune viruses in epidemic form. As with more developed health care systems, blood transfusion practices in sub-Saharan Africa were incapable of detecting the emergence of HIV. As a result, given the wide use of transfusion, it became an important pathway for the initial spread of AIDS. Yet African health officials were not without means to understand and respond to the new danger, thanks to forty years of experience and a framework of appreciating long-standing health risks. The response to this risk, detailed in this book, yields important insight into the history of epidemics and HIV/AIDS. Drawing on research from colonial-era governments, European Red Cross societies, independent African governments, and directly from health officers themselves, this book is the only historical study of the practice of blood transfusion in Africa.
Download or read book Food Into Cities written by Olivio Argenti and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of African cities means they have a great challenge in ensuring an adequate supply of food to satisfy their nutritional needs in terms of quantity, variety and taste, at accessible/affordable prices. Food supply and distribution systems (FSDS), whether formal or informal, are a key element. An efficient FSDS can increase the availability of food to the urban consumer, and at the same time increase the revenues of both traders and producers. However, there are a number of constraints that impede the efficiency of FSDS and these are discussed in the papers in this Bulletin that address the whole issue of food supply and food security. They are addressed towards urban managers and planners together with professionals and researchers concerned with urban food security.

Download or read book Global Exchanges and Gender Perspectives in Africa written by Jean-Bernard Ouedraogo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global perspectives adopted in this volume by the authors, from different academic disciplines and social experiences, ought not to be locked in sterile linearity which within process of globalisation would fail to perceive, the irreversible opening up of the worlds of the south. There is the need within the framework of the analyses presented here, to quite cogently define the sense of the notion of the market. The market here does not refer to saving or the localised exchange of goods, a perspective which is imposed by normative perceptions. In fact, a strictly materialistic reading of exchange would be included, since every social practice and interaction implies a communitarian transaction; meanwhile the exchange system under study here broadens to root out the obligation of the maximisation of mercantile profit from the cycle of exchange. Trade here would have a meaning closer to those of old, one of human interaction, in a way that one could also refer to bon commerce between humans. In one way, trade places itself at the heart of social exchanges, included the power of money, and is carried along by a multitude of social interactions. The reader is called upon to take into account the major mercantile formations of the social trade system, the market society, without forgetting the diversity of exchange routes as well as the varying modalities of social construction, at the margins and within market logics those of implicit value in trade between humans which the texts herein also seek to review. The age-old project of restructuring the domestic economy, the market society as it has developed in the West, whence it has set out to conquer the whole wide world places at the very centre of the current capitalist expansion the challenge of imperatively reshaping gender identity, inter alia, in market relations.
Download or read book The Crisis of Global Youth Unemployment written by Tamar Mayer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the economic and financial crisis of 2008, the proportion of unemployed young people has exceeded any other group of unemployed adults. This phenomenon marks the emergence of a laborscape. This concept recognizes that, although youth unemployment is not consistent across the world, it is a coherent problem in the global political economy. This book examines this crisis of youth unemployment, drawing on international case studies. It is organized around four key dimensions of the crisis: precarity, flexibility, migration, and policy responses. With contributions from leading experts in the field, the chapters offer a dynamic portrait of unemployment and how this is being challenged through new modes of resistance. This book provides cross-national comparisons, both ethnographic and quantitative, to explore the contours of this laborscape on the global, national, and local scales. Throughout these varied case studies is a common narrative from young workers, families, students, volunteers, and activists facing a new and growing problem. This book will be an imperative resource for students and researchers looking at the sociology of globalization, global political economy, labor markets, and economic geography.
Download or read book Post Colonial Cameroon written by Joseph Takougang and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique volume, leading scholars examine how Cameroonians organize and experience their lives under Cameroonian leadership and local responses to that leadership. The volume offers essential case studies that allow us to examine the lives of ordinary people in post-colonial Africa through five lenses: politics, society and culture, economy, international relations, and migration. It places the nation’s contemporary challenges within a broader political, economic, and socio-cultural context, and uses that to make recommendations for future directions. The book also celebrates areas in which the country has done well and calls on its citizens to build on those achievements. This volume is forward-looking and as such raises important questions about issues of development, ethnicity, wealth, poverty, and class.

This book was released on 2024-07-10 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book captures some of the emergent topics and methods in demography at the turn of this 21st century. Like all social sciences, the concerns and tools of demography must evolve with the times. As new technologies expand data management opportunities, and as a changing world faces new demographic issues, the field of demographic research must expand as well. The chapters in the book rise to this challenge by embracing new questions or new approaches to classic questions about demographic processes and their link to development, including inequality, health, migration, and youth across the world.
