Book Sheriff of Camelot

Download or read book Sheriff of Camelot written by Jeffrey J. Kohler and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the conclusion of the Prohibition era, federal law enforcement became largely indifferent toward organized crime in the United States. The Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, specifically, were primarily focused on communism and other seditious activities. This apathy toward organized crime allowed gangsters and racketeers to flourish, benefitting from the postwar economic boom. Between 1957 and the late 1980s, the federal government underwent a fundamental shift in its stance toward organized crime. The impetus for these changes came in large part from the work of Robert F. Kennedy. While serving as counsel for the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations from 1957 - 1959, Kennedy was exposed to the problem of organized crime. It was at this point he formulated a methodology that would come to define the United States' drive against organized crime for decades. Later, as Attorney General during the administration of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy sought to implement reforms to federal wiretap policies, immunity statutes, witness protection, and cooperation between local law enforcement and the Justice Department. Kennedy did not live to see all of these changes made, but ultimately his work provided the model for the federal government's efforts against organized crime today. Relying on government documents, hearings records, and extensive oral histories, this study concludes that while Kennedy's efforts failed to engender significant change in the short term, his legacy is defined by long term contributions to federal law enforcement which remain in effect to this day.

And it does.”—Chicago Sun-Times This is award-winning historian David Pietrusza's hard-edged account of the 1960 presidential campaign, the election that ultimately gave America “Camelot” and its tragic aftermath. It is the story of the bare-knuckle politics of the primaries; the party conventions' backroom dealings; the unprecedented television debates; the hot-button issues of race, religion, and foreign policy—and, at the center of it all, three future presidents: Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy, and Richard Nixon. “Terrific.” —Robert A. Caro, winner of two Pulitzer Prizes and the National Book Award “A stirring, hard-edged political saga… An outstanding reexamination.”—Booklist "1960 provides new insights into that year's hard-fought, pivotal election, but, more than that, 1960 is great storytelling—a fascinating, can’t-put-it-down account of how American politics really works.”—former United States Attorney General Richard Thornburgh “Essential for understanding the political forces that in many ways shaped the world we live in today.” —David Mark, author of Going Dirty: The Art of Negative Campaigning

Book State Crime in the Global Age

Download or read book State Crime in the Global Age written by William J. Chambliss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State Crime in the Global Age brings together original writings from leading scholars in the field to explore the many ways that the use and abuse of state power results in grave social harms that outweigh, by far, the consequences of ordinary street crime. The topics covered include the crimes of empire, illegal war, the bombing of civilians, state sanctioned torture, state sacrifice of human lives, and judicial wrongdoing. The book breaks new ground through its examination of the ways globalization has intensified potentials for state crime, as well as bringing novel theoretical understandings of the state to the study of state crime, and exploring strategies for confronting state crime. This book, while containing much that is of interest to scholars of state crime, is designed to be accessible to students and others who are concerned with the ways individuals, social groups, and whole nations are victimized by the misuse of state power.

Book Camelot s End

Download or read book Camelot s End written by Jon Ward and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a strange, dark chapter in American political history comes the captivating story of Ted Kennedy's 1980 campaign for president against the incumbent Jimmy Carter, told in full for the first time. The Carter presidency was on life support. The Democrats, desperate to keep power and yearning to resurrect former glory, turned to Kennedy. And so, 1980 became a civil war. It was the last time an American president received a serious reelection challenge from inside his own party, the last contested convention, and the last all-out floor fight, where political combatants fought in real time to decide who would be the nominee. It was the last gasp of an outdated system, an insider's game that old Kennedy hands thought they had mastered, and the year that marked the unraveling of the Democratic Party as America had known it. Camelot's End details the incredible drama of Kennedy's challenge -- what led to it, how it unfolded, and its lasting effects -- with cinematic sweep. It is a story about what happened to the Democratic Party when the country's long string of successes, luck, and global dominance following World War II ran its course, and how, on a quest to recapture the magic of JFK, Democrats plunged themselves into an intra-party civil war. And, at its heart, Camelot's End is the tale of two extraordinary and deeply flawed men: Teddy Kennedy, one of the nation's greatest lawmakers, a man of flaws and of great character; and Jimmy Carter, a politically tenacious but frequently underestimated trailblazer. Comprehensive and nuanced, featuring new interviews with major party leaders and behind-the-scenes revelations from the time, Camelot's End presents both Kennedy and Carter in a new light, and takes readers deep inside a dark chapter in American political history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting historical narrative of the shocking events surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and the follow-up to mega-bestselling author Bill O'Reilly's Killing Lincoln. The basis for the 2013 television movie of the same name starring Rob Lowe as JFK. More than a million readers have thrilled to Bill O'Reilly's Killing Lincoln, the page-turning work of nonfiction about the shocking assassination that changed the course of American history. Now the iconic anchor of The O'Reilly Factor recounts in gripping detail the brutal murder of John Fitzgerald Kennedy—and how a sequence of gunshots on a Dallas afternoon not only killed a beloved president but also sent the nation into the cataclysmic division of the Vietnam War and its culture-changing aftermath. In January 1961, as the Cold War escalates, John F. Kennedy struggles to contain the growth of Communism while he learns the hardships, solitude, and temptations of what it means to be president of the United States. Along the way he acquires a number of formidable enemies, among them Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and Allen Dulles, director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In addition, powerful elements of organized crime have begun to talk about targeting the president and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy. In the midst of a 1963 campaign trip to Texas, Kennedy is gunned down by an erratic young drifter named Lee Harvey Oswald. The former Marine Corps sharpshooter escapes the scene, only to be caught and shot dead while in police custody. The events leading up to the most notorious crime of the twentieth century are almost as shocking as the assassination itself. Killing Kennedy chronicles both the heroism and deceit of Camelot, bringing history to life in ways that will profoundly move the reader.
