Book excerpt: (Author's Preface)I should like to state at the beginning of my book that what is stated in it on controversial matters is my own firm opinion, except where in a few cases the views of other people are published and their names given.I wish to make it clear that though there were, and are, sharp differences of opinion on the subject of Fast-Leg-Theory bowling between myself and some Australians, there was always an atmosphere of complete cordiality between the teams on both sides. Although we differ seriously over my Fast-Leg-Theory bowling I have done my best in the following pages not to disturb that atmosphere.Until now my side of the matter has not been heard. I have refused many tempting offers to break silence. As a fast bowler and a hitter by nature I have written strongly because I cannot express myself otherwise.I hope very much indeed that in doing so, though I was one, of the aggrieved parties in Australia, I have given nobody half the offence from which I suffered so often on the last tour.A belief exists that some of the things I have written about are not yet to be discussed.Obviously I differ from that view. I do so because I feel that in a matter of such vital interest to cricketers as the possible admission by legislation of such a far-reaching principle as that bowlers may not bowl as they like, no cricketer can keep silent. I believe I have only written here what very many cricketers are saying. But I have written supported by first-hand knowledge. For the many imperfections of style and language in my first book I beg the indulgence of my reader.Yours Sincerely,H. Larwood

Book Near Death on the Sub Continent

Download or read book Near Death on the Sub Continent written by David Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gavin Stevens was a talented schoolboy cricketer who played 'B' Grade district cricket for Glenelg D.C.C. at the age of 14. Originally a fast bowler, Gavin developed into a powerful opening batsman. Very early in his career he forced his way into the South Australian state side. He struggled early to establish himself but time in England, following the early death of both parents, matured him and he returned a better player. Success in his final two years of domestic first class cricket saw him selected in the Australian team for the inaugural full tour of Pakistan and India. His great joy soon became a nightmare as he joined the list of players who succumbed to serious illness. In Gavin's case not only was his career threatened but so was his life. The tour changed him in several ways and he never played first-class cricket again. The book titled NEAR DEATH ON THE SUB-CONTINENT - THE GAVIN STEVENS STORY is a wonderful tale. It looks at Steven's early struggles and ends with a look at his business career that is truly remarkable. The story of Bradman and his thoughts on Test players, especially Stevens, is interesting. The book of 183 pages includes statistics of Stevens' career and has some previously unpublished photos. With stiffened wrappers the book is a must for those interested in Australian tours to the sub-continent and South Australian cricket in the 1950s.

Book excerpt: How does a batsman concentrate? Just how is a player 'in form' or 'out of form'? Are preparations for Tests, ODIs and T20s really very different? Why do certain teams 'crumble badly under pressure' while others 'choke'? And, really, what makes for pressure? This insightful book by former international cricketer Aakash Chopra takes you inside the making and unmaking of cricketers: how they think, how they are likely to react to various match situations, and above all, why they react the way they do. From reading the bowler to gauging the batsman, from playing the bouncer to elding at short-leg, from the technical aspects of the game to the psychological, from the tangible to the abstract, The Insider shuts out the noise and hysteria to allow fans a rare peek into the cricketing brain. This compelling volume is a milestone in writing on cricket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London, 1868: visiting Australian Aboriginal cricketer Charles Rose has died in Guy's Hospital. What happened next is shrouded in mystery. The only certainty is that Charles Rose's body did not go directly to a grave. Written with clarity and verve, and drawing on a rich array of material, Possessing the Dead explores the disturbing history of the cadaver trade in Scotland, England and Australia, where laws once gave certain officials possession of the dead, and no corpse lying in a workhouse, hospital, asylum or gaol was entirely safe from interference. With a rare blend of curiosity, delight in the unexpected and an eye for detail, award-winning historian Helen MacDonald brings to life this gruesome past to reveal the chicanery at play behind the procuring of bodies for dissections, autopsies and collections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five Days in White Flannels is a quizzical tribute to Test cricket, the holy grail of achievement on the cricket field. It is also a nostalgic journey that venerates the five-day duel between the bat and the ball partaken by men clad in cream clothing on an idyllic cricket ground, and is a far cry from the environs of other forms of cricket that now-a-days deliver instant gratification. This is a comprehensive trivia book that tickles the brain of the reader with numerous fascinating and intriguing factoids of Test cricket. The book takes the reader partly through some narratives, each of which is tagged with a trivial question and then, to add variety, the narratives are interspersed with fair share of regular trivial queries and few cryptic questions. In the pages of this book, you will find out: The name of the cricketer who was referred to as Test crickets village batsman What a Platinum Duck is The name of the cricketer inflicted by Klippel-Feil syndrome What a Water-drip effect in cricket is About the replica of the cricket ground that billionaire Paul Getty built on his estate About the association of Richard Nixon, Robert McNamara & Alexei Kosygin with cricket
