Book Cretaceous Well log and Sequence Stratigraphic Correlation of the Outer Continental Shelf and Upper Slope Off of New Jersey

Download or read book Cretaceous Well log and Sequence Stratigraphic Correlation of the Outer Continental Shelf and Upper Slope Off of New Jersey written by Zuhal Seker and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinct, regionally continuous Cretaceous sand bodies are present beneath the outer continental shelf and upper slope off of New Jersey that encompasses much of the basin known as the Baltimore Canyon Trough (BCT). These sand bodies are possible candidates for liquid CO2 sequestration. This thesis aims to delineate and correlate four distinct sand units (Middle Sandstone, Upper Logan Canyon, Lower Logan Canyon Sand units, and Missisauga Unit) and their suitability for CO2 sequestration that requires sufficient depth, porosity, permeability, spatial continuity and presence of cap rock. I have analyzed geophysical logs and biostratigraphic data from 11 wells to identify the lithostratigraphic units of the BCT that are potentially suitable for carbon sequestration and have established three well log transects to demonstrate the spatial continuity of the target sand units. The correlation of lithostratigraphic units along the dip profiles reveals the stratigraphic patterns of the target sand units. The Middle Sandstone Unit has a progradational pattern throughout the study area, spanning the Coniacian through Santonian. Weak continuity and presence of hydrocarbon-bearing intervals indicate that this unit is not suitable for sequestration. The Upper Logan Canyon Sand Unit has a progradational pattern, spanning the Albian through Cenomanian. This sand body has a spatial continuity in the northeastern part of the BCT area and includes thick porous sandstone beds sealed with impermeable rocks above, suggesting potential for sequestration. The Lower Logan Canyon Sand Unit follows a retrogradational pattern, spanning the Aptian through Albian. The Lower Logan Canyon Sand Unit promises more continuity towards the south, unlike the upper unit. The Lower Logan Canyon Sand Unit is more favorable as a sequestration target. The Missisauga Unit has a progradational pattern, spanning the Hauterivian through Aptian. This unit is very thick and continuous throughout the study area, including abundant porous sand beds sealed with impermeable beds. However, many gas-bearing intervals are present within this deeply buried unit, and the age control is ambiguous, thus, making it a less favorable to unfavorable sequestration target.

This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequence stratigraphy has become a powerful tool in the basin analysis of the North Sea Basin, and will continue to play an important role in the maximization of the remaining hydrocarbon potential of the region, whilst also supporting the energy transition in carbon capture and storage projects with Jurassic storage units. This Memoir provides a long-awaited, comprehensive documentation of Jurassic to lowermost Cretaceous sequence stratigraphy of the region (UK, Norway, Denmark and adjacent areas). The volume is amply illustrated by numerous well log displays, core images, seismic lines, chronostratigraphic diagrams and outcrop photographs. Individual chapters discuss the historical usage of sequence stratigraphy in the North Sea Jurassic, sequence stratigraphic concepts and models, application in hydrocarbon field development, definition of stratigraphic traps, well sequence interpretation methodology and controls on sequence development. To complete the volume there are further chapters on North Sea Jurassic lithostratigraphy and its relation to sequence stratigraphy, and descriptions of the biozones used to characterize and correlate the sequences.

Book Cretaceous Sea Level Rise

Download or read book Cretaceous Sea Level Rise written by Mu Ramkumar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cretaceous Sea Level Rise delves into the question of whether the observed short-term sea-level changes are regional (tectonic) or global (eustatic) and determines their possible relation to climate cycles; to assess the role of feedback mechanisms, i.e. thermal expansion/contraction of seawater, subsidence due to loading by water, changing vegetation of the Earth System and to investigate the relation of sea-level highs and lows to ocean anoxia and oxidation events, represented by black shales and oceanic red beds, and to evaluate the evidence for ephemeral glacial episodes or other climate events. Though research has been, and is being, conducted in these fields since the introduction of sea level cycles and sequence development concepts in the 1970"s, the available information is scattered. Cretaceous Sea Level Rise presents the current understanding and future directions of the research on Cretaceous sea level cycles in a single source, forming a reference work for beginners, graduates and postgraduates who are interested in this subject. - Authored by an expert in Sea Level Rise, with over 15 years' experience - Concludes with a section that looks to the future of sea level change - The only source to combine the current understanding and future directions of the research on Cretaceous sea level cycles in one place

Book Lower Miocene ca 20 18 Ma New Jersey Sequence Stratigraphy

Download or read book Lower Miocene ca 20 18 Ma New Jersey Sequence Stratigraphy written by Gabriel Gallegos and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a sequence stratigraphic framework, I investigated lower Miocene Kirkwood Formation sequences Kw1a and Kw1b in onshore New Jersey coastal plain coreholes and their relationship to their coeval offshore sequences m5.8 and m5.7, respectively, on the New Jersey continental shelf. I used corehole and gamma log data from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 150X Cape May and Leg 174AX Ocean View sites to evaluate the anatomy of sequences Kw1a and Kw1b by identifying gamma log stacking patterns, lithologic changes/stacking patterns, Sr-isotope data, chronostratigraphic data, bioturbation, indurated zones, and stratal surfaces (i.e., maximum flooding surfaces [MFS], transgressive surfaces [TS], and sequence boundaries). At Cape May, I found that Kw1a is a composite sequence containing three higher order sequences (Kw1a1, Kw1a2, and Kw1a3), similar to its counterpart at Ocean View. Sequence m5.8 at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 313 Site M27 was reinterpreted by integrating Oc270 line 529 seismic data with core and gamma log data, and two possible interpretations at Site M27 are presented here: 1) m5.8 is a single ~1 Myr scale sequence or 2) m5.8 is a ~1 Myr scale composite sequence containing at least two ~100-400 ka scale higher order sequences. Loop correlationsSeismic-core-well log integration analysis suggest that at the AMCOR 6011 site, sequence m5.8 (Kw1a) is a composite sequence. I integrated seismic, core, and well log data to test the physical correlation between the offshore and onshore sequences in question. I correlated onshore sequences Kw1a and Kw1b using the gamma logs of coastal plain and nearshore sites Cape May, Ocean View, Cape May Zoo, Sea Isle City, Strathmere, Atlantic City, ACOW 1, ACOW 2, and AMCOR 6011. I integrated onshore, nearshore, and offshore core and gamma log data with R/V Cape Hatteras 0698 (CH0698) and R/V Oceanus 270 (Oc270) multichannel seismic (MCS) profile grids and loop correlated seismic sequence boundaries along the seismic profiles and demonstrated that sequences Kw1a and Kw1b physically correlate to m5.8 and m5.7, respectively.
