Book Fish Marketing and Credit in Viet Nam

Download or read book Fish Marketing and Credit in Viet Nam written by Audun Lem and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies show that local consumer demand for fish will continue to increase in Viet Nam. At the same time, the export-oriented fish processing industry will see a growing need for raw materials. These substantial future demands for safe and high-quality fish products can only be met if efficient marketing arrangements are established. This paper identifies a number of constraints in the current domestic fish market, which form the basis for recommendations to improve the present marketing arrangements in Viet Nam. The paper also explores how credit is widely used for financing marine capture fisheries, particularly offshore fishing and export-oriented fish culture, processing and marketing in Viet Nam. State-owned financial institutions play a major role in financing capital expenditure while working capital requirements are mainly met by informal sources of credit. However, future investment requirements and credit needs are greater than currently available.

Download or read book Informal Credit Markets And The New Institutional Economics written by Sagrario L Floro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conventional wisdomaboutcreditmarketshas been radically alteredin recent years through the introduction of elements of moral hazard, adverseselectionofrisk, and quality-price relationships. Important empiricalstudies have been published which are leading to vastly different policyimplications. This analysis has not been explicitly extended to informalcredit markets so far, although it is widely recognized that credit transactedoutside the banking circuit is quantitatively huge and qualitatively critical, especially in developing countries. This book combines the new theoretical approach to credit markets withcertain precepts of the New Institutional Economics in order to analyzeinformal credit markets. While the formal financial institutions in developingcountries carry out credit transactions within the limits set by the marketenvironment and by government policies, informal institutions evolve by aparticular selection of modes of economic behavior which are responses tointrinsic imperfections of the market. The informal sector enhances trust bymakingexistingtiesanintegralcomponentofcreditcontracts:thecontractualcomponent of informal credit capitalizes on the personalistic (social andeconomic) relationships between the transacting parties.

Download or read book Fish to 2020 written by Christopher L. Delgado and published by WorldFish. This book was released on 2003 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seemingly inexhaustible oceans have proved to be finite after all. Capture of wild fish have leveled off since the mid-1980s, and many stocks of fish are fished so heavily that their future is threatened. And yet the world's appetite for fish has continued to increase, particularly as urban populations and incomes grow in developing countries. Aquaculture--fish farming--has arrived to meet this increased demand. Production of fish from aquaculture has exploded in the past 20 years and continues to expand around the world. But will aquaculture be sufficient to provide affordable fish to the world over the next 20 years? And what environmental and poverty problems will aquaculture face as it expands? Using a state-of-the-art computer model of global supply and demand for food and feed commodities, this book projects the likely changes in the fisheries sector over the next two decades. As prices for most food commodities fall, fish prices are expected to rise, reflecting demand for fish that outpaces the ability of the world to supply it. The model shows that developing countries will consume and produce a much greater share of the world's fish in the future, and trade in fisheries commodities will also increase. The authors show the causes and implications of these and other changes, and argue for specific actions and policies that can improve outcomes for the poor and for the environment.
