Book excerpt: God's creation is a symphony, a tapestry of beautiful artwork. God's face can be seen through the morning sunrise as it dances across the land. His beauty is seen in the roses in springtime. His majesty is felt in the sound of coming storm clouds. God's promise of love to us can be seen in the light of the moon on the ocean and in the tide that washes against our ankles. The writer reminds us that we must take time to see the beauty around us, to rest in God's grace and to let God's love fill us until it overflows. God's promise of love is for a lifetime. His love is there whether we are living on the mountaintop or in the valley deep. It is the writer's prayer that the reader will truly see God in these pages. Tim Stewart was born in Florida, grew up in Colorado and relocated to South Carolina for college. He resides with his mom and stepfather, "Pops" in Gilbert, South Carolina. Life began to change unexplainably for Tim during his college years. Although unknown to him at the time, Tim later learned that he had a mental illness and in 2002 was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He has learned over the last few years that schizophrenia is part of who he is. But, more importantly, he knows that God is still in control despite the struggles associated with this disease. With his strong faith in God and the strong support of his family and friends he does his best to live each day to the fullest. God has given him a wonderful talent and his greatest desire is to use his writings to glorify his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: Genomic science indicates that humans descend not from an individual pair but from a large population. What does this mean for the basic claim of many Christians: that humans descend from Adam and Eve? Leading evangelical geneticist Dennis Venema and popular New Testament scholar Scot McKnight combine their expertise to offer informed guidance and answers to questions pertaining to evolution, genomic science, and the historical Adam. Some of the questions they explore include: - Is there credible evidence for evolution? - Do we descend from a population or are we the offspring of Adam and Eve? - Does taking the Bible seriously mean rejecting recent genomic science? - How do Genesis's creation stories reflect their ancient Near Eastern context, and how did Judaism understand the Adam and Eve of Genesis? - Doesn't Paul's use of Adam in the New Testament prove that Adam was a historical individual? The authors address up-to-date genomics data with expert commentary from both genetic and theological perspectives, showing that genome research and Scripture are not irreconcilable. Foreword by Tremper Longman III and afterword by Daniel Harrell.

Book excerpt: A breakthrough novel from the acclaimed young American writer Boris Leonidovich, a North American professor who specializes in the history of prison architecture, has been invited to Buenos Aires for an academic conference. He’s planning to present a paper on Moscow’s feared Butyrka prison, but most of all he’s looking forward to seeing his enigmatic, fiercely intelligent colleague (and sometime lover) Ana again. As soon as Boris arrives, however, he encounters obstacle after unlikely obstacle: he can’t get in touch with Ana, he locks himself out of his rented room, and he discovers dog-feeding stations and water bowls set before every house and business. With night approaching, he finds himself lost and alone in a foreign city filled with stray dogs, all flowing with sinister, bewildering purpose though the darkness... Shadowed with foreboding, and yet alive with the comical mischief of César Aira and the nimble touch of a great stylist, Dog Symphony is an un-nerving and propulsive novel by a talented new American voice.

Book Welcome to the Symphony

Download or read book Welcome to the Symphony written by Carolyn Sloan and published by Workman Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using one of the most famous works in classical music—Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony—here is the perfect way to introduce a young child to the world of classical music. This charming and interactive picture book with its panel of 19 sound buttons is like a ticket to a concert hall, taking readers on a journey from the exciting first moment when the musicians begin tuning up to the end of the first movement (attention newcomers: don’t clap yet!). At each step of the way, readers learn the basics of classical music and the orchestra: What is a conductor? What is a symphony? Who was Beethoven? The different aspects of music: melody, harmony, tempo, theme. And the families of instruments—strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. But the best part is that every critical idea is illustrated in gorgeous sound. The sound panel allows readers to hear the different parts of the symphony and voices of the music—the famous beginning of the Fifth, what a clarinet sounds like, the difference between a violin and a viola, what a melody is, and what harmony is. Kids will want to match their voices to the A note that tunes the orchestra, dance to the rhythmic passages—and, of course, sing along to da-da-da-daah!

Book Mahler s Seventh Symphony

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anna Stoll Knecht
  • Publisher : Studies in Musical Genesis, St
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 0190491116
  • Pages : 401 pages

Download or read book Mahler s Seventh Symphony written by Anna Stoll Knecht and published by Studies in Musical Genesis, St. This book was released on 2019 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustav Mahler's Seventh Symphony stands out as one of the most provocative symphonic statements of the early twentieth century. Throughout its performance history, it has often been heard as "existing in the shadow" of the Sixth Symphony or as "too reminiscent" of Richard Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Anna Stoll Knecht's Mahler's Seventh Symphony offers a new interpretation of the Seventh based on a detailed study of Mahler's compositional materials and a close reading of the finished work. With a focus on sketches previously considered as "discarded," Stoll Knecht exposes unexpected connections between the Seventh and both the Sixth and Meistersinger, confirming that Mahler's compositional project was firmly grounded in a dialogue with works from the past. This referential aspect acts as an important interpretive key to the work, enabling the first thorough analysis of the sketches and drafts for the Seventh, and shedding light on its complex compositional history. Considering each movement of the symphony through a double perspective, genetic and analytic, Stoll Knecht demonstrates how sketch studies and analytical approaches can interact with each other. Mahler's Seventh Symphony exposes new facets of Mahler's musical humor and leads us to rethink much-debated issues concerning the composer's cultural identity, revealing the Seventh's pivotal role within his output.
