Book excerpt: The LESS 2010 conference was the first scientific conference dedicated to advancing the “lean enterprise software and systems” body of knowledge. It fostered interactions by joining the lean product development community with the agile community coupled with innovative ideas nurtured by the beyond budgeting school of thinking. The conference was organized in collaboration with the Lean Software and Systems Consortium (LSSC). The conference is established as a conference series. The idea of the conference was to offer a unique platform for advancing the state of the art in research and practice by bringing the leading researchers and practitioners to the same table. Indeed, LESS 2010 attracted a unique mix of participants including academics, researchers, leading consultants and industry practitioners. The aim of the conference was to use this diverse community to advance research and practical knowledge concerning lean thinking within the field of software business and development. LESS 2010 had more than 60% of its speakers come from the industry and the remaining from academia. LESS is poised to grow as we advance into future iterations of the conference and become the conference for lean thinking in systems and software development. Its growth and credibility will be advanced by the communities and knowledge exchange platform it provides. LESS offers several avenues for knowledge exchange to create a highly collaborative environment. Each year, we aim to bring novelty to a program that fosters collaboration, letting new ideas thrive during and after the conference.
Download or read book Knowledge at the Crossroads written by Lyn Yates and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much discussion about what needs to change in education institutions in the 21st century, but less attention given to how core disciplinary studies should be considered within that context. This book is based on a major 4-year research study of history and physics in the changing environment of schools and universities in Australia. Are these forms of knowledge still valuable for students? Are they complementary to, or at odds with the concerns about ‘21st century skills’, interdisciplinary and collaborative research teams, employability and ‘learner-centred’ education? How do those who work in these fields see changes in their disciplines and in their work environment? And what are the similarities and differences between the experiences of teachers and academics in physics and those in history? The book draws on interviews with 115 school teachers and university academics to provide new perspectives on two important issues. Firstly, how, for the purposes of today’s schools and universities, can we adequately understand knowledge and knowledge building over time? Secondly, what has been productive and what has been counter-productive in recent efforts to steer and manage the changes in Australia?

Download or read book Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Distance Education and e Learning written by Insung Jung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality assurance (QA) in open and distance learning (ODL) can be a contentious issue. Some argue that it should be judged by the same criteria and methods as face-to-face education, while others claim that it is so different in its organization, enrolments and operations that conventional QA mechanisms cannot apply. Some advocate the use of specific guidelines and standards for e-learning; others believe that, regardless of the technology, the basic principles of quality teaching and learning should apply. Providers who have enjoyed freedom from external scrutiny may resist attempts at external regulation and auditing and look upon QA as yet another imposition of corporatization and bureaucracy on education. Others see it as a means of establishing a culture of quality, self-reflection and self-improvement. There is little research-based literature to guide policy-makers, managers and practitioners in applying QA in education and training to ensure the right balance is found between accountability and autonomy, as well as assuring quality for the time and costs involved. In this respect, Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Distance Education and e-Learning is a book that is long overdue. It explains what is involved in QA and accreditation in education. It describes and analyzes applications of these practices in open, distance, dual-mode and conventional universities throughout Europe, North America, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific, looking at open schooling, e-learning in conventional schools, non-formal adult and community education, and corporate and small-to-medium enterprises. Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Distance Education and e-Learning is edited and authored by experts with extensive international experience in ODL, e-learning and QA who give careful consideration to the possibilities and challenges involved. The book will be an invaluable guide for all policy-makers, managers, practitioners and researchers in the field.
Download or read book Lessons Learned in Software Testing written by Cem Kaner and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Engineering and Managing Software Requirements written by Aybüke Aurum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-07 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Requirements engineering is the process by which the requirements for software systems are gathered, analyzed, documented, and managed throughout their complete lifecycle. Traditionally it has been concerned with technical goals for, functions of, and constraints on software systems. Aurum and Wohlin, however, argue that it is no longer appropriate for software systems professionals to focus only on functional and non-functional aspects of the intended system and to somehow assume that organizational context and needs are outside their remit. Instead, they call for a broader perspective in order to gain a better understanding of the interdependencies between enterprise stakeholders, processes, and software systems, which would in turn give rise to more appropriate techniques and higher-quality systems. Following an introductory chapter that provides an exploration of key issues in requirements engineering, the book is organized in three parts. Part 1 presents surveys of state-of-the art requirements engineering process research along with critical assessments of existing models, frameworks and techniques. Part 2 addresses key areas in requirements engineering, such as market-driven requirements engineering, goal modeling, requirements ambiguity, and others. Part 3 concludes the book with articles that present empirical evidence and experiences from practices in industrial projects. Its broader perspective gives this book its distinct appeal and makes it of interest to both researchers and practitioners, not only in software engineering but also in other disciplines such as business process engineering and management science.
