Buildings constructed more than 10 years ago account for a major share of energy used by the building stock. However, the funding and “know-how” (applied knowledge) available for owner-directed energy retrofit projects has not kept pace with new requirements. With typical retrofit projects, reduction of energy use varies between 10 and 20%, while actual executed renovation projects show that energy use reduction can exceed 50%, and can cost-effectively achieve the Passive House standard or even approach net zero-energy status (EBC Annex 61 2017a, Hermelink and Müller 2010; NBI 2014; RICS 2013; Shonder and Nasseri 2015; Miller and Higgins 2015; Emmerich et al. 2011). Building energy efficiency (EE) ranks first in approaches with resource efficiency potential with a total resource benefit of approximately $700 billion until 2030. EE is by far the cheapest way to cut CO2 emissions (McKinsey 2011, IPCC 2007). However, according to an IEA study (IEA 2014a), more than 80% of savings potential in building sector remains untapped. Thus, the share of deployed EE in the building sector is lower than in the Industry, Transport, and Energy generation sectors. Estimates for the deep renovation potentials show: €600-900bn investment potential, €1000-1300bn savings potential, 70% energy-saving potential, and 90% CO2 reduction potential.

Advanced Energy Retrofit (AER) projects can significantly reduce energy consumption in buildings. The construction process can significantly influence the success of AER projects. It is important for a team to have a clearly defined process for delivering the construction, as a part of an integrated process, and understand information flows between the activities within the process. A challenge to the successful implementation of an integrated construction process which involves many disciplines is to deliver a smooth information flow in the process with an emphasis of integrated attributes. To address this problem, this research is focused on the development of a process model for the construction phase of an energy retrofit building project. The process investigates construction activities at a building system level in an integrated fashion for the AER projects, which are beneficial to researchers and practitioners who are interested in studying the integrated construction process. The final process model contains key activities in the retrofit project construction process that can be implemented in the integrated approach. The model was developed and validated through literature analysis, interviews, and focus group discussions.The developed model is one phase of the Integrated Building Lifecycle Process Map (IBLPM), which is focused on the development of the activities that occur throughout the entire lifecycle process for delivering an energy retrofit project. The construction phase of the IBLPM can serve as a reference for project teams to collaboratively identify the key construction activities which are shown in a logical sequence and at a system level. Therefore, it allows people to clearly define the content of the construction process and help project team to make the right decision at the right time. In addition, the process model organizes the activities into an integrated construction framework, which will facilitate the collaboration of the various project participants.

Book excerpt: This book describes results of research conducted with the goal of providing a framework, selected tools, and guidelines to significantly reduce energy use (by more than 50%) in government and public buildings. The scope of the book is limited to public buildings that were constructed before the 1980s with low internal loads (e.g., office buildings, dormitories, barracks, public housing, and educational buildings) and that were undergoing major renovation. The book contains description and analysis of 26 well-documented case studies from Europe (Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Montenegro, The Netherlands, and the UK) and the USA. After these data were collected, the case studies were analyzed with respect to energy use (before and after renovation), reasons for undertaking the renovation, co-benefits achieved, resulting cost-effectiveness, and the business models followed. Finally, “lessons learned” were compiled and compared. Deep Energy Retrofit (DER) is a major building renovation project in which site energy use intensity (including plug loads) has been reduced by at least 50% from the pre-renovation baseline with a corresponding improvement in indoor environmental quality and comfort. Lessons learned from the case studies and experiences of the team clearly indicate that DER can be achieved with the application of “bundles” of a limited number of core technologies readily available on the market. Specific characteristics of some of these core technology bundles generally depend on the technologies available on an individual nation’s market, on the minimum requirements of national standards, and on economics (as determined by a life cycle cost [LCC] analysis).

Book excerpt: The retrofit of buildings to improve energy performance represents a vast opportunity in the construction market with the potential to create jobs, reduce energy demand, and achieve environmental benefits. Multiple challenges need to be overcome to unleash this potential and realize the benefits of investments in improving building energy performance. While large facilities often have easily predictable energy saving potential at scales that are attractive to the financial industry, they are often pursued in a manner that achieves only low hanging fruit for short term economic return. As a consequence, they often fall short of their potential to be pursued as a long term solution. Small sized buildings face even more challenges often related to the lack of the owners abilities to manage and finance energy efficiency improvements. The goal of this research is to develop a framework that supports the continuous improvement of processes involved in developing energy retrofit projects for small sized commercial buildings. The concept of regenerative thinking guided the investigation of value creation and exchange in networks of the stakeholders of a given energy retrofit. Characterization of investment risk in the value adding processes enables more informed investment decisions required to bring a retrofit project to optimal fruition. This enables the identification of high-risk investments during the process that can be elevated as key decisions to prove the investment risks are proportionate to the value being offered. The reduction of project development costs and risks can then contribute to a market-driven expansion of these project and the resulting economic, ecological, and social system effects. In addition, process improvement interventions can be designed and evaluated by their potential and actual effects in lowering the capital investment required to pursue retrofit projects. Key elements of this framework are developed through case studies, focus groups, and interviews. In conclusion, research results examining the value of the framework in improving the business development process for small commercial building energy retrofit projects are presented.

It outlines the strategic direction East Asia s energy sector must take to meet its growing energy demand in an environmentally sustainable manner, and presents a pathway of policy frameworks and financing mechanisms to get there. The six East Asian countries China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam examined in this book could, with the right policies and financing, stabilize CO2 emissions by 2025, improve their local environment, and enhance energy security without compromising economic growth. They must move their energy sectors toward much higher efficiency and more widespread use of low-carbon technologies, while obtaining substantial financing and low-carbon technologies from developed countries. This clean energy revolution requires major policy and institutional reforms, including energy pricing reforms, regulations such as energy efficiency standards, financial incentives such as feed-in tariffs for renewable energy, and accelerated research and development. Finally, building low-carbon cities will be key to containing the rapid urban energy growth through compact urban design, public transport, clean vehicles, and green buildings. The window of opportunity is closing fast delaying action would lock the region into a longlasting high-carbon infrastructure. The technical and policy means exist for such transformational changes, but only strong political will and unprecedented international cooperation will make them happen.

Thus, unlearning (forgetting) becomes a critical means for organizational success. The ECKM community of scholars has already initiated dialogue that links its particular strengths to innovation issues. This conference aims to further that dialogue by attracting leading edge work that leverages the ECKM community's in-depth understanding of learning and unlearning to better understand knowledge management. Our aim is to stimulate breakthrough research streams linking learning, unlearning and knowledge management. How can organizations tailor, use, and extend techniques and tools from knowledge management for improving their business practices and processes? Building upon existing work on knowledge management (KM) and organizational learning, the conference will promote interdisciplinary approaches from computer science and information systems, business, management and organization science as well as cognitive science. Emphasis will be put on systematic learning from experience, KM tools and KM success factors. A special interest belongs to knowledge management initiatives which are lightweight (i.e., do not place considerable additional burden on users and KM experts), allow an incremental adoption (i.e., do not require large up-front investment before any return of investment is at least visible), and are flexible regarding frequent changes in experts and topics.
