The first part describes the methods used to build the first sizeable corpus of informal conversational data collected from bilingual speakers of Welsh and English: Siarad. The second part describes the linguistic analysis of data from this corpus (available at bangortalk.org.uk). The information in Part One will be useful as a ‘how to’ manual on building a bilingual spoken corpus, including methods of data collection, transcription, glossing and analysis. The findings reported in Part Two throw new light on the debate regarding code-switching vs. borrowing, the application of the Matrix Language Framework (MLF) to the grammar of Welsh-English code-switching, the extralinguistic factors influencing variation in quantity of code-switching, and the extent to which the grammar of Welsh is changing in contact with English. Additional findings by other researchers using the corpus are also reported, and possible future directions are discussed.

I chose this topic because I had the great opportunity to have a direct insight into the Welsh primary school system over a certain period of time and therefore can draw on my own personal perceptions. The relevance of this subject-matter is of great importance since Wales can be considered an international character in educating through a minority language. It demonstrates that in one society two languages can co-exist, which contributes to a stronger community-spirit and pride but at the same time exhibits different opinions concerning the effectiveness of early bilingual education. In the following I will provide a definition for bilingualism and explain the meaning of bilingual education as well as its different types, referring to Baker. Furthermore I will introduce the theoretical framework this term paper is based on, making reference to Jim Cummins’ ‘Balance Theory’, ‘Interdependence Hypothesis’ or ‘Dual Iceberg Theory’ and the ‘Thresholds Theory’. The first two mentioned theories can be classified into the idea of ‘Separate Underlying Proficiency’ and ‘Common Underlying Proficiency’, which will be elucidated later on. Subsequently I will move on to the emergence of bilingual education in Wales, illustrating the justification of bilingual education at an early stage of life, the infant and primary school period. Ensuing I will outline my personal experiences made with primary school children in a Welsh village called Letterston, located in Pembrokeshire, from age five to eleven, stating my own observations concerning the educational situation. Ultimately I will present a conclusion relating to the advantageous or unfavourable function of bilingual education performed in Welsh primary schools based on my own experience and theoretical background.

Indeed, the compliment that pleased him most was that he had ‘created Welsh history’. Published to mark the centenary of Lloyd’s most important book, A History of Wales from the Earliest Times to the Edwardian Conquest (1911), the study reassesses Lloyd’s significance by setting his work in its multiple contexts. Part One gives an account of his life, with particular emphasis on his upbringing, education and subsequent career as a historian, viewed against the background both of efforts to give expression to Welsh nationhood through educational institutions and of wider developments in the professionalization of historical scholarship. In Part Two the focus shifts from the biographical to the thematic and examines why Lloyd privileged the early and medieval Welsh past and how he depicted this in his 1911 History. These chapters investigate key themes in Lloyd’s interpretation with reference not only to previous accounts of Welsh history but also to the broader intellectual and scholarly context of his own time. Through its reappraisal of Lloyd the book provides a case study of how the past of a small, stateless nation was reconfigured, at a time of self-conscious national revival, through deploying modern canons of scholarship that served to legitimize a new narrative of national origins. As the decades progressed, Welsh popular music developed beyond its acoustic folk roots, adopting the various styles of contemporary popular music, and ultimately gaining the cultural self-confidence to compete in the Anglo-American mainstream market. The resulting tensions, between Welsh and English, amateur and professional, rural and urban, the local and the international, necessitate the understanding of Welsh pop as part of a much larger cultural process. Not merely a 'Celtic' issue, the cultural struggles faced by Welsh speakers in a predominantly Anglophone environment are similar to those faced by innumerable other minority communities enduring political, social or linguistic domination. The aim of 'Blerwytirhwng?' The Place of Welsh Pop Music is to explore the popular music which accompanied those struggles, to connect Wales to the larger Anglo-American popular culture, and to consider the shift in power from the dominant to the minority, the centre to the periphery. By surveying the development of Welsh-language popular music from 1945-2000, 'Blerwytirhwng?' The Place of Welsh Pop examines those moments of crisis in Welsh cultural life which signalled a burgeoning sense of national identity, which challenged paradigms of linguistic belonging, and out of which emerged new expressions of Welshness.
