Book excerpt: After going head-to-head with Lysander Mayberry and losing, Alexander Kingsley decides that the only way to avenge his career-ending injury is to hit Sander where it hurts most. His twin sister, Lilianna. Fixated on revenge and goaded into action by his devious father, Alex sets out to corner the MC princess. And, once he has her in his sights, Alex is delighted to discover that Anna isn’t as meek and mild as he first suspected. Innocent yet rebellious, Anna isn’t exactly enamoured with Alex or his need to control her. Since there is nothing Alex likes better than going to battle against a worthy opponent, he quickly finds himself obsessed with two things. Revenge and Lilianna Mayberry. In fact, he decides that once he’s used Anna to break her twin’s spirit, he’s going to keep the headstrong blonde for himself. If he can manage to tame her, that is. Coming up against roadblock after roadblock, Alex’s dogged pursuit leads to blackmail, and shortly after that, it morphs into a fight to the death. After all, in a world where the Maddison clan and the Black Shamrocks MC are natural-born enemies, there were always only two possible ways for this battle to end… Kill or be killed. This 90,000-word dark psychological suspense novel is the first book in Bella Faust's Black Shamrocks MC: Australia series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international bestseller from award-winning writer Mark Schatzker that reveals how our dysfunctional relationship with food began—and how science is leading us back to healthier living and eating. For the last fifty years, we have been fighting a losing war on food. We have cut fat, reduced carbs, eliminated sugar, and attempted every conceivable diet only to find that eighty-eight million American adults are prediabetic, more than a hundred million have high blood pressure, and nearly half now qualify as obese. The harder we try to control what we eat, the unhealthier we become. Why? Mark Schatzker has spent his career traveling the world in search of the answer. Now, in The End of Craving, he poses the profound question: What if the key to nutrition and good health lies not in resisting the primal urge to eat but in understanding its purpose? Beginning in the mountains of Europe and the fields of the Old South, Schatzker embarks on a quest to uncover the lost art of eating and living well. Along the way, he visits brain scanning laboratories and hog farms, and encounters cultural oddities and scientific paradoxes—northern Italians eat what may be the world’s most delicious cuisine, yet are among the world’s thinnest people; laborers in southern India possess an inborn wisdom to eat their way from sickness to good health. Schatzker reveals how decades of advancements in food technology have turned the brain’s drive to eat against the body, placing us in an unrelenting state of craving. Only by restoring the relationship between nutrition and the pleasure of eating can we hope to lead longer and happier lives. Combining cutting-edge science and ancient wisdom, The End of Craving is an urgent and radical investigation that “charts a roadmap not just for healthy eating, but for joyous eating, too” (Dan Barber, New York Times bestselling author of The Third Plate).

Book The Craving Cure

Download or read book The Craving Cure written by Julia Ross and published by Flatiron Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drop Addictive Sweets and Starches--and Stop Weight Gain--in 24 Hours Featuring a 5-part questionnaire to help you identify your personal craving profile Julia Ross, best-selling author and expert in nutrition and overeating, exposes the real reason so many of us can’t stick to a healthy diet: our favorite foods are engineered to be addictive. At her clinic in California, Ross and her colleagues treat food addiction where it starts--in the brain--by triggering our natural appetite-regulating neurotransmitters with nutrients called amino acids. It turns out that these protein concentrates boost our neurotransmitters, which broadcast sensations of satisfaction that no food, including chocolate, can override. Thousands of Ross’ clients have abolished their cravings for high-calorie confections using this simple nutritional strategy. With The Craving Cure, Ross grants all of us access to this revolutionary approach. The process begins with a five-part questionnaire that helps you identify your unique craving profile and specifies the amino acid supplements you need to curb your specific cravings. Ross’ clear explanations of why and how to use the aminos empower you to reclaim your natural appetite control, and her anti-craving eating guidelines will permanently strengthen your dietary defenses. A well-researched and clinically-tested rejection of low-calorie, low-saturated fat, and low-protein diets, The Craving Cure reveals how we can effortlessly and permanently eradicate our cravings to lose weight, rediscover our nutritional heritage, and regain optimal mood, energy, and health.

Book Controlled Drinking

  • Author : Nick Heather
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2023-12-01
  • ISBN : 1003819265
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Controlled Drinking written by Nick Heather and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981 and revised in 1983, Controlled Drinking was the first scholarly review of the literature on a controversial but increasingly practiced approach to the treatment of alcoholism. Nick Heather and Ian Robertson analyse all the pertinent questions that controlled drinking raises, starting with the need to examine the ‘disease conception’ of alcoholism and ‘total abstinence’ treatment. They look at the evidence indicating that some people, previously diagnosed as alcoholics, are able to return to normal, controlled patterns of drinking, and discuss therapies where controlled drinking is the treatment goal, fully reviewing the evidence for their success and failure. Concluding with a discussion of the theoretical and policy implications of controlled drinking, the authors recommend that the disease view of alcoholism be finally abandoned. For the revised paperback edition, as well as correcting and updating the text and references, the authors included an important postscript on the charges of falsification of evidence and their subsequent refutation which made up the Sobell affair. The wealth of other material presented in Controlled Drinking supports the authors’ conclusions even if the Sobells’ work were ignored. However, this revised edition was made more useful for student and professional readers by the postscript’s discussion of the controversy surrounding the most widely known and quoted controlled drinking trial at the time.
