Book excerpt: The worst cookbook ever, packed with truly bizarre and utterly disgusting recipes from all over the world Ever since humankind produced its first foodie, the culinary world has dished up some staggering confections which could best be described as 'acquired tastes': dishes such as Virgin Boy Eggs (eggs soaked in the urine of prepubescent boys); live octopus, which clutches at the diner's tongue and throat as it is swallowed; and Beard Beer, made from the yeast found in facial hair. In northern Greenland, the Inuit are fond of cramming as many as 500 dead auks (small sea birds) into an old seal skin which they place under a large rock until the birds have fermented into what has rightly been described as a 'sticky, pungent, toxic, cheesy gloop'. Kiviak, as it is called, is eaten by biting off the birds' heads and sucking out the juices. The mighty Roman Empire was built on such delicacies as larks' tongues, stuffed thrush, boiled flamingo and grilled cow's womb, while the Tudors loved nothing more than a roast cockenthrice: the head and upper body of a pig carefully stitched onto the lower body and legs of a turkey. Today, for those with an adventurous mindset and a robust life insurance policy, there is no shortage of nauseating local delicacies to enjoy. In China, not only is tuna eyeball on the menu, but also yak penis (served whole). In Vietnam, one can enjoy the still-beating heart of a freshly-killed snake; in Iceland, raw puffin heart. In the Philippines, there is duck embryo to be had - like a Kinder Surprise . . . only containing a dead foetus instead of a toy. In Sardinia, they like nothing more than a nice bit of maggot-infested cheese; and the favourite tipple of Korean foodies is Ttongsul, a wine made from the fermented faeces of a child. Bon appetit!

Book Crap

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wendy A. Woloson
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2020-10-05
  • ISBN : 022666449X
  • Pages : 405 pages

Download or read book Crap written by Wendy A. Woloson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crap. We all have it. Filling drawers. Overflowing bins and baskets. Proudly displayed or stuffed in boxes in basements and garages. Big and small. Metal, fabric, and a whole lot of plastic. So much crap. Abundant cheap stuff is about as American as it gets. And it turns out these seemingly unimportant consumer goods offer unique insights into ourselves—our values and our desires. In Crap: A History of Cheap Stuff in America, Wendy A. Woloson takes seriously the history of objects that are often cynically-made and easy to dismiss: things not made to last; things we don't really need; things we often don't even really want. Woloson does not mock these ordinary, everyday possessions but seeks to understand them as a way to understand aspects of ourselves, socially, culturally, and economically: Why do we—as individuals and as a culture—possess these things? Where do they come from? Why do we want them? And what is the true cost of owning them? Woloson tells the history of crap from the late eighteenth century up through today, exploring its many categories: gadgets, knickknacks, novelty goods, mass-produced collectibles, giftware, variety store merchandise. As Woloson shows, not all crap is crappy in the same way—bric-a-brac is crappy in a different way from, say, advertising giveaways, which are differently crappy from commemorative plates. Taking on the full brilliant and depressing array of crappy material goods, the book explores the overlooked corners of the American market and mindset, revealing the complexity of our relationship with commodity culture over time. By studying crap rather than finely made material objects, Woloson shows us a new way to truly understand ourselves, our national character, and our collective psyche. For all its problems, and despite its disposability, our crap is us.

Rather than attempt to alleviate or rise above life's trauma, the Crap Hound Big Book of Unhappiness instead enthusiastically catalogues popular culture s attempts to illustrate, channel and finally exploit our anxieties. Between a brief introduction and the end credits, the Crap Hound Big Book of Unhappiness is pure vintage 20th century imagery, carefully collected from old catalogues, advertising, obscure books, and found ephemera.

Book Crap at My Parents House

Download or read book Crap at My Parents House written by Joel Dovev and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2011-09-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated celebration of the trinkets and tchotchkes that accumulate over a lifetime—and turn ordinary family homes into weird museums . . . Deer-hoof bottle openers. Grizzly bear toilet paper holders. A copy of Sports Illustrated from 1983 with Hulk Hogan on the cover. You never know what you might find lurking at your parents’ house. Standup comic and blogger Joel Dovev has made it his personal quest to compile a catalog of the useless, tacky, and utterly bizarre items that moms and dads not only acquire in the first place, but refuse to throw out, all for reasons unbeknownst to their kids. If you’ve ever helped with cleaning and organizing efforts—or just opened up a junk drawer or a box in the basement during a visit home—you’re sure to recognize the feeling of stumbling across treasures such as these and asking yourself, “Why?” Packed with photos and humorous observations, Crap at My Parents’ House is a very special journey sure to provoke a mixture of tender nostalgia . . . and head-shaking bafflement.

Book excerpt: In August this year, inspired by a particularly horrendous date he'd just had and fed up with the trials of single life, journalist and author Rhodri Marsden invited his Twitter followers to send in their worst ever dating experiences (in 140 characters or less, of course). The result was astonishing. Within hours Rhodri was flooded with 1000s of crazy, shocking and hilarious true stories of dating disasters. Book Holy Crap

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Hines
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2011-03-09
  • ISBN : 1456864505
  • Pages : 207 pages

Download or read book Holy Crap written by David Hines and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-03-09 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We should start our own religion.” One simple sentence, one really bad idea. But to chronic underachievers Danny Welles and Walter James, starting a new religion sounded like the best idea they'd ever had. Those six little words would inspire them to write their own dogma, ensnare a gullible Hollywood star to be their spokesman, hijack the nation’s highest-rated TV talk show and create the Church of OK, a religion based on “positivity and permissiveness” that would fuel a media firestorm rocketing them to fame – and infamy. Holy Crap is a funny, satirical look at our modern culture, following its characters as they take on religion, Hollywood, television, the tabloids and each other with the goal to enrich lives – as well as their own bank accounts. It’s a journey filled with religious zealots, 7-Eleven hot dogs, Caddyshack as a Christian allegory, Kama Sutra with cats, a certain amount of substance abuse, and heartfelt sex on playground equipment.

Book Oh Crap Potty Training

Download or read book Oh Crap Potty Training written by Jamie Glowacki and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From potty-training expert and social worker Jamie Glowacki, who’s already helped over half a million families successfully toilet train their preschoolers, comes a newly revised and updated guide that’s “straight-up, parent-tested, and funny to boot” (Amber Dusick, author of Parenting: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures). Worried about potty training? Let Jamie Glowacki, potty-training expert, show you how it’s done. Her six-step, proven process to get your toddler out of diapers and onto the toilet has already worked for tens of thousands of kids and their parents. Here’s the good news: your child is probably ready to be potty trained EARLIER than you think (ideally, between 20–30 months), and it can be done FASTER than you expect (most kids get the basics in a few days—but Jamie’s got you covered even if it takes a little longer). If you’ve ever said to yourself: -How do I know if my kid is ready? -Why won’t my child poop in the potty? -How do I avoid “potty power struggles”? -How can I get their daycare provider on board? -My kid was doing so well—why is he regressing? -And what about nighttime?! Oh Crap! Potty Training can solve all of these (and other) common issues. This isn’t theory, you’re not bribing with candy, and there are no gimmicks. This is real-world, from-the-trenches potty training information—all the questions and all the answers you need to do it once and be done with diapers for good.
