Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Kennel Club's Meet the Chihuahua, an official publication of the American Kennel Club (AKC) prepared in collaboration with the Chihuahua Club of America, serves as the go-to resource for new and experienced owners of the world's tiniest dog. With his saucy personality, childlike intelligence, and perfect diminutive stature, the Chihuahua is the favorite of millions of dog lovers in America and around the world. Meet the Chihuahua begins with a discussion about who makes the right owner for such a tiny wonder as the Chihuahuas, and the parent-like responsibilities that accompany owning this long-lived canine tot. Equally important is the selection of the right breeder, a topic covered in a chapter on puppy selection that includes a list of questions to ask the breeder and the answers new owners are looking for. The book addresses the health of the Chi and alerts new owners to potential problems in the breed. The chapter on health discusses the importance of finding the right veterinarian for this breed as well as how to embark on a preventive-healthcare regimen with your vet. New owners will profit from the chapters dedicated to selecting the right merchandise for a new puppy and how to make the home and yard safe for the inquisitive Chi puppy. House-training and obedience training are presented in individual chapters, topics that all Chi owners need to consider seriously. The AKC's stance on positive training methods shines through as owners are enlightened to the power of praise and rewards. Additionally, Meet the Chihuahua offers info about grooming both coat varieties, exercise, dental health, and feeding. The final chapter presents a fun-filled chapter on participating in dog sports;from participating in AKC performance events like dog shows, obedience and agility trials to becoming certified as a therapy dog and visiting nursing homes and retirement homes with your ready-to-love Chihuahua. The chapters also offer advice on how to pursue the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and the Canine Good Citizen programs, both ideal for young dogs getting their start in organized dog events and therapy work. The Resources section of the book includes excellent recommendations for websites, periodicals, books, and programs that owners will find informative and helpful.

Book Picturing the Wolf in Children s Literature

Download or read book Picturing the Wolf in Children s Literature written by Debra Mitts-Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the villainous beast of “Little Red Riding Hood” and “The Three Little Pigs,” to the nurturing wolves of Romulus and Remus and Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, the wolf has long been a part of the landscape of children’s literature. Meanwhile, since the 1960s and the popularization of scientific research on these animals, children’s books have begun to feature more nuanced views. In Picturing the Wolf in Children’s Literature, Mitts-Smith analyzes visual images of the wolf in children’s books published in Western Europe and North America from 1500 to the present. In particular, she considers how wolves are depicted in and across particular works, the values and attitudes that inform these depictions, and how the concept of the wolf has changed over time. What she discovers is that illustrations and photos in works for children impart social, cultural, and scientific information not only about wolves, but also about humans and human behavior. First encountered in childhood, picture books act as a training ground where the young learn both how to decode the “symbolic” wolf across various contexts and how to make sense of “real” wolves. Mitts-Smith studies sources including myths, legends, fables, folk and fairy tales, fractured tales, fictional stories, and nonfiction, highlighting those instances in which images play a major role, including illustrated anthologies, chapbooks, picture books, and informational books. This book will be of interest to children’s literature scholars, as well as those interested in the figure of the wolf and how it has been informed over time.

Like almost all small towns everywhere, it is full of its fair share of unusual characters and nosy neighbors. While it may not have the bright lights of the city on its side, it nevertheless, is the furthest thing from boring. One family, in particular, has taken it upon themselves to make sure that no one will ever fall victim to the mundane habits of normalcy. This family can be found on the outskirts of town, in a little neighborhood called Sprite Street. They go by the last name of Doodleburgh and for all intents and purposes, their name is the least strange thing about them. The family consists of five kids and two parents. Harold and Madeline rule with less, than an iron fist. As at times, even the combined authority of both of them, is not enough, when it comes to contending with the out of control ways of their children. Caroline, is sixteen and the oldest of the Doodleburgh kids. She is strong willed and brilliant. Not to mention, musically inclined. Her talents are many, yet, she lacks composure and at times, her tenacity gets the better of her. Aiden and Cayden are fifteen and between the two of them ,take part in all things sports. If their older sister is the brains of the family, then they would be considered the brawns of the Doodleburgh offspring. What they lack in intelligence, they make up for in God -given, physical talents. Jackson, is a ten year old with a propensity for trouble. His pension for destruction, knows no bounds. While his eight year old sister; Abbey, is known for being Jackson’s miniature sidekick.Who, is all too willing, to take part in her brother’s destructive ways. Add that, with an assortment of odd and quirky characters that make up, their friends and neighbors and one always finds something new and interesting taking place on Sprite Street. Come join in on the adventure, that is the Doodleburgh’s.

Now Jack has come home to see P.J., his girlfriend and sole remaining touchstone. But she's missing, and blame falls on Jack. On the run with Gisco, his crafty canine sidekick, Jack is literally caught up in a whirlwind as he travels to the heart of darkness to rescue P.J. -- a journey that will bring him face-to-face with the father of his old nemesis, the colonel, aka the Dark Lord from the future. Jack's quest becomes all the more complicated as he discovers that the only person who can stop the Dark Lord is another time traveler, the wizard Kidah, who has disappeared in the present. Book 2 of the Caretaker Trilogy mixes heart-racing adventure with an urgent ecological warning about the fragility of the world's rain forests and the importance of respect for indigenous peoples.
