Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic and innovative hands-on projects for kids ages 3 and up designed to teach both heritage skills and how to think creatively. Handcraft is part of human nature: we build, we create, we innovate. The 20+ projects in this book from an experienced art educator weave a story of human innovation and creativity, from the very beginnings of building shelters in the woods to tinkering with recycled materials. Heritage skills teach children how to be independent and capable makers; fiber and wood projects offer rewarding crafts that also teach planning, preparation, and safe risk taking; and tinkering activities connect the low-tech process of making and doing with innovation. From soap carving and knot tying to building toy cars and junk robots, this book brings the fun of making things with your hands to young kids and links skills of the past with the present. The book also explores how to set up a maker space and teaches foundational workshop practices that can easily be applied to the home studio. Each project offers extensions for different ages and abilities and provides guiding questions to enrich the experience for both the maker (teacher/parent) and the apprentice (child) to encourage and celebrate creative, practical play.

Book excerpt: The Bay City, Michigan, YWCA camp began as a small gathering of 65 women during the summer of 1916 at a rental cottage in Killarney. The second site, selected two years later, was on Aplin Beach near Saginaw Bay. In 1924, the YWCA purchased the Camp Maqua property in Hale, on the shores of Loon Lake, with a solitary farmhouse, and numerous cabins were then completed. After the YWCA sold the property to a private owner in 1979, it was subdivided into 10 parcels. In 1987, the Baker/Starks families purchased the lodge and 14 acres. Ten families continue to keep the spirit of Maqua alive through an association dedicated to retaining the historical integrity of the land and remaining buildings.

Book Craft Brewed Jesus

Download or read book Craft Brewed Jesus written by Michael Camp and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the modern American church has its Christian history wrong? According to ex-evangelical Michael Camp, most American believers fail Christian History 101. Drawing on his own historical research and missionary experience, he discovers that most popular Christian views of the Bible, church, sin, salvation, judgment, the kingdom of God, the "end times," and the afterlife--pretty much all religious sacred cows--don't align with the beliefs of the original Jesus movement. Some of them not even close. Camp's Craft Brewed Jesus paves a fascinating journey of a group of disillusioned evangelicals and Catholics. When they decide to meet regularly over craft beers to study the historic foundations of their faith, their findings both rock their world and resolve ancient mysteries. They examine well-documented narratives of the early Jesus saga, Eastern streams of a lost Christianity, and the roots of our modern religious assumptions, all while striving to steer clear of either a conservative or liberal bias. What they uncover is a vital, refreshing spiritual paradigm no longer at odds with reality. Grab your brew of choice and trace this transformational journey based on a true story that will encourage you in your walk of life and faith.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp Craft: Modern Practice and Equipment No one who studies man's beginnings in the light of modern research can doubt that Woodcraft was the earliest of our sciences. It was Woodcraft indeed that constructed man out of the crude and brutish stufl' that was then the best live product of the earth. We can see a little of the process to-day in our children, just as we see the baby panther wear first the spotted coat of his long-past forebears, before he dons the brown of his older kin. And weightier yet it seems to me that Woodcraft, in its broad entirety, more than any other activity, is calculated to save our species from decay. The Camp Life is the climax of all Woodcraft, and the man who leads us there - who blazes the trail, who teaches us the fords that grow less fear some as we follow - is a heal-worker for our race. Many a man and woman, I have heard say or imply, that they would like to go camping, but they are afraid. Of what? Vague fears of animals Unknown terrors? Or very definite fears of hard ships that they believe are an essential part of it? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
