Book excerpt: A pantomime script for use by any group of people who want to entertain themselves and their friends, the authors are quite happy for you to alter any of the script providing it remains suitable for family entertainment. The central character is Dame Strong, who opens the play by discussing the meaning of life with a mirror. Dame Strong is ugly, and has a terrible secret, so dark that she tells no-one about it. Hearing of a potion that might make her more attractive, she sends her next door neighbours (three Fine Young Things called Dee Lisla, Sam Sun and Spare Part) to find the ingredients for this potion. Hearing all this, her sister (Marion) decides to run away to a nunnery. The evil butler (Wat Youwant) decides to send his minions to search for the ingredients, hoping to get them first and be in a position to make money by selling the potion to the Dame...The authors and the cast had great fun putting this pantomime on for their friends and hope you do too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sondheim in Our Time and His offers a wide-ranging historical investigation of the landmark works and extraordinary career of Stephen Sondheim, a career which has spanned much of the history of American musical theater. Each author uncovers those aspects of biography, collaborative process, and contemporary context that impacted the creation and reception of Sondheim's musicals. In addition, several authors explore in detail how Sondheim's shows have been dramatically revised and adapted over time. Multiple chapters invite the reader to rethink Sondheim's works from a distinctly contemporary critical perspective and to consider how these musicals are being reenvisioned today. Through chapters focused on individual musicals, and others that explore a specific topic as manifested throughout his entire career, plus an afterword by Kristen Anderson-Lopez; by digging deep into the archives and focusing intently on his scores; from interviews with performers, directors, and bookwriters, and close study of live and recorded productions--volume editor W. Anthony Sheppard brings together Sondheim's past with the present, thriving existence of his musicals.

Book The Callas Imprint A Centennial Biography

Download or read book The Callas Imprint A Centennial Biography written by Sophia Lambton and published by The Crepuscular Press. This book was released on 2023-12-02 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coating opera's roles in opulence, Maria Callas (1923-1977) is a lyrical enigma. Seductress, villainess, and victor, queen and crouching slave, she is a gallery of guises instrumentalists would kill to engineer… made by a single voice. But while her craftsmanship has stood the test of time, Callas’ image has contested defamation at the hands of saboteurs of beauty. Twelve years in the making, this voluminous labour of love explores the singer with the reverence she dealt her heroines. The Callas Imprint: A Centennial Biography reaps never-before-seen correspondence and archival documents worldwide to illustrate the complex of their multi-faceted creator - closing in on her self-contradictions, self-descriptions, attitudes and habits with empathic scrutiny. It swivels readers through the singer's on- and offstage scenes and flux of fears and dreams... the double life of all performers. In its unveiling of the everyday it rolls a vivid film reel starring friends and foes and nobodies: vignettes that make up life. It's verity. It's meritable storytelling. Not unlike the Callas art.
