Book Historical Dictionary of the Berbers Imazighen

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Berbers Imazighen written by Hsain Ilahiane and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berbers, also known as Imazighen, are the ancient inhabitants of North Africa, but rarely have they formed an actual kingdom or separate nation state. Ranging anywhere between 15-50 million, depending on how they are classified, the Berbers have influenced the culture and religion of Roman North Africa and played key roles in the spread of Islam and its culture in North Africa, Spain, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Taken together, these dynamics have over time converted to redefine the field of Berber identity and its socio-political representations and symbols, making it an even more important issue in the 21st century. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Berbers contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 200 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, places, events, institutions, and aspects of culture, society, economy, and politics. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Berbers.

Book Kac Moody Groups their Flag Varieties and Representation Theory

Download or read book Kac Moody Groups their Flag Varieties and Representation Theory written by Shrawan Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-09-10 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Most of these topics appear here for the first time in book form. Many of them are interesting even in the classical case of semi-simple algebraic groups. Some appendices recall useful results from other areas, so the work may be considered self-contained, although some familiarity with semi-simple Lie algebras or algebraic groups is helpful. It is clear that this book is a valuable reference for all those interested in flag varieties and representation theory in the semi-simple or Kac-Moody case." —MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS "A lot of different topics are treated in this monumental work. . . . many of the topics of the book will be useful for those only interested in the finite-dimensional case. The book is self contained, but is on the level of advanced graduate students. . . . For the motivated reader who is willing to spend considerable time on the material, the book can be a gold mine. Book A Companion to the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East

Book excerpt: A COMPANION TO THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST A Companion to the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East is a comprehensive and authoritative overview of ancient material culture from the late Pleistocene to Late Antiquity. This expansive two-volume work includes 58 new essays from an international community of ancient Near East scholars. With coverage extending from Asia Minor, the eastern Mediterranean, and Egypt to the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Indo-Iranian borderlands, the book highlights the enormous variation in cultural developments across roughly 11,000 years of human endeavor. In addition to chapters devoted to specific regions and particular periods, many contributors concentrate on individual industries and major themes in ancient Near Eastern archaeology, ranging from metallurgy and agriculture to irrigation and fishing. Controversial issues, including the nature and significance of the antiquities market, ethical considerations in archaeological praxis, the history of the foundation of departments of antiquities, and ancient attitudes towards the past, make this a unique collection of studies that will be of interest to scholars, students, and interested readers alike.

Book Ethnicities Community Making and Agrarian Change

Download or read book Ethnicities Community Making and Agrarian Change written by Hsain Ilahiane and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2004 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ethnography studies how, when, and under what circumstances culture change occurs. It is author Hsain Ilahiane's conviction that culture change directly affects resource use and community building processes. This study investigates the relationship between ethnicity and agricultural production at the household level, as well as the result of recent ethnic transformations in the restructuring of patterns of land access and social mobility within ethnically stratified communities. Ilahiane focuses specifically on the intensive farming systems of Morocco's Ziz Oasis, a 250 km long expanse watered by the Ziz River. Surrounded by Saharan desert, the valley houses a dense, rapidly grown, and ethnically diverse population of Arabs, Berbers, and Haratine (blacks). The author employs a varied body of data collected during fieldwork, including ethnographic accounts, oral histories and colonial archival records, and socio-economic and ecological findings based on a household questionnaire strategy.
