Book A Cowboy s Whispered Psalms

Download or read book A Cowboy s Whispered Psalms written by Kip Sawdy and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my mouth was a loaded .357. I planned to make my way to heaven. I had been living in sin. My hopes had all grown dim. ... But it wasn't my time, And I couldn't take something that wasn't mine. In A Cowboy's Whispered Psalms, author Kip Sawdy takes readers on a wild ride, sharing his deepest struggles, greatest victories, and darkest defeats. Through a combination of poetry and narrative, Sawdy tells his story-the good, the bad, and the ugly-and acknowledges his innate need for and dependence on God. But Sawdy hasn't always had such faith and hope. He's spent his fair share of time on the other side of the fence, with sin as his constant companion. Through each poem, Sawdy shows us that despite all of our imperfections, God loves us through his perfect Son. His story is a call to repentance, a call to fight the fleshly desires that so often undermine even the strongest convictions. A Cowboy's Whispered Psalms is the perfect book for anyone in need of inspiration and encouragement. Sawdy's use of poetry, personal insights, and scripture are a testimony to God's faithfulness in times of trouble, whether that means staring down the end of a barrel, facing a mean bull, or fighting the devil within.

  • Author : Marie W. Dallam
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Cowboy Christians written by Marie W. Dallam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowboy Christians examines the long history of cowboy Christianity in the American West, with a focus on the present-day cowboy church movement. Based on five years of historical and sociological fieldwork in cowboy Christian communities, this book draws on interviews with leaders of cowboy churches, traveling rodeo ministries, and chaplains who serve horse racing and bull riding communities, along with the author's first-hand experiences as a participant observer. Marie W. Dallam traces cowboy Christianity from the postbellum period into the twenty-first century, looking at religious life among cowboys on the range as well as its representation in popular imagery and the media. She examines the structure, theology, and perpetuation of the modern cowboy church, and speculates on future challenges the institution may face, such as the relegation of women to subordinate participant roles at a time of increasing gender equality in the larger society. She also explores the cowboy Christian proclivity for blending the secular and the sacred in leisure environments like arenas, racetracks, and rodeos. Dallam locates the modern cowboy church as a descendant of the muscular Christianity movement, the Jesus movement, and new paradigm church methodology. Cowboy Christians establishes the religious significance of the cowboy church movement, particularly relative to twenty-first-century evangelical Protestantism, and contributes to a deeper understanding of the unique Christianity of the American West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that nearly 90 percent of the Texan population currently lives in metropolitan regions, but many Texans still embrace and promote a vision of their state’s nineteenth-century rural identity? This is one of the questions the editors and contributors to Lone Star Suburbs confront. One answer, they contend, may be the long shadow cast by a Texas myth that has served the dominant culture while marginalizing those on the fringes. Another may be the criticism suburbia has endured for undermining the very romantic individuality that the Texas myth celebrates. From the 1950s to the present, cultural critics have derided suburbs as landscapes of sameness and conformity. Only recently have historians begun to document the multidimensional industrial and ethnic aspects of suburban life as well as the development of multifamily housing, services, and leisure facilities. In Lone Star Suburbs, urban historian Paul J. P. Sandul, Texas historian M. Scott Sosebee, and ten contributors move the discussion of suburbia well beyond the stereotype of endless blocks of white middle-class neighborhoods and fill a gap in our knowledge of the Lone Star State. This collection supports the claim that Texas is not only primarily suburban but also the most representative example of this urban form in the United States. Essays consider transportation infrastructure, urban planning, and professional sports as they relate to the suburban ideal; the experiences of African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos in Texas metropolitan areas; and the environmental consequences of suburbanization in the state. Texas is no longer the bastion of rural life in the United States but now—for better or worse—represents the leading edge of suburban living. This important book offers a first step in coming to grips with that reality.

Book Encouragement from the Psalms

Download or read book Encouragement from the Psalms written by Dr. B and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-02-16 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As James Brandon read and studied the Psalms over the years, he came to realize that the Lord was talking to our souls through these ancient songs. He was also struck by a book written in the 1800s by a man named Hawker, who after reading one of the Psalms would exclaim: “Oh my soul, what is this that thou hast found in the Holy Writ?” He would talk to his soul after reading the text. The author began to read the Psalms and reflect on what each one said to his soul. He has done that for fifty years. In this book, he focuses on Psalms forty-two to seventy-two: the Exodus Book of the Psalms, which encompasses restoration and redemption from bondage. They are songs that teach salvation, the doctrines of the faith, and how to take care of your soul. The Psalms are a wonderland of devotion. They have enlightened the author’s mind and encouraged his spirit. They can do the same for you—all while providing principles for living this life as you help others walk with the Lord.

Book excerpt: As a pastor of Mountain Top Cowboy Church I have discovered that there is little material designed specifically for cowboy churches or cowboy ministries. Although I have been in the ministry for 16 years I had never considered writing a book however the Lord had other plans. In October of 2009 I broke my leg while competing at a 40 and over bull riding which required surgery. I do not believe that it was Gods plan for me to ride a bull at the age of 46 but my books are an example that the Lord will use every situation we are in for good if we will allow Him to use us. During my time of recovery I started writing poems and short stories about my rodeo days then it turned to cowboy poetry. In the beginning it was a way to pass the time and deal with my situation. As I continued to write I began to relate my poems to scripture and it was then that the Lord truly began to use them to reach others. After sharing a few with my church I discovered that they could be a useful tool in cowboy churches and ministries or those in the western culture. My first book of poems and proverbs On The Trail was just another example of the Lords Grace and Mercy in my life. He Holds The Reins is a continuation of that Grace and Mercy. Now that I am On The Trail with Christ I allow Him to take the reins of my life while I ride toward heaven on the narrow trail.
