From tuberculosis to bird flu and HIV to coronavirus, these infectious diseases share a common origin story: human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these pathogens—both pre-existing ones and those newly identified—emerge and re-emerge throughout history, sparking epidemics and pandemics that have resulted in millions of deaths around the world. How did these diseases come about? And what—if anything—can we do to stop them and their fatal march into our countries, our homes, and our bodies? In How to Survive a Pandemic, Dr. Michael Greger, physician and internationally-recognized expert on public health issues, delves into the origins of some of the deadliest pathogens the world has ever seen. Tracing their evolution from the past until today, Dr. Greger spotlights emerging flu and coronaviruses as he examines where these pathogens originated, as well as the underlying conditions and significant human role that have exacerbated their lethal influence to large, and even global, levels. As the world grapples with the devastating impact of the novel coronavirus 2019, Dr. Greger reveals not only what we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones during a pandemic, but also what human society must rectify to reduce the likelihood of even worse catastrophes in the future.

Book Individual and Organizational Vulnerability and Resilience Factors in the COVID 19 Pandemic

Download or read book Individual and Organizational Vulnerability and Resilience Factors in the COVID 19 Pandemic written by Barbara Hildegard Juen and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vulnerability and resilience are concepts that have long been treated as individual and contradicting topics. In recent times, we have seen that vulnerabilities and resilience can go hand in hand and that vulnerabilities cannot be conceptualized only in simple terms because intersectionality must be considered as well as social, organizational, and systemic aspects and processes. One example is that women are more vulnerable (higher values in nearly all stress related measures) in the COVID-19 pandemic. This finding has to be analyzed from an intersectional perspective, because socio-economic factors, cultural factors, exposure to COVID-19 and the type of occupation (e.g. healthcare sector, frontline workers) play an important role in how vulnerable or resilient women can be in a given society. The large number of studies on COVID-19 vulnerabilities makes it necessary to take a closer look at the resilience factors that often go hand in hand with potential vulnerabilities. As we see in the literature about pandemics in general and COVID-19, there are some individual, organizational and systemic vulnerabilities that can be found in all pandemics. From that we can assume that there will be resilience factors within the same concepts that may buffer vulnerabilities.

  • ISBN : 9403524219
  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book So Now You Are an Arbitrator written by Neil Kaplan and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In arbitration, procedure is crucial to ensure acceptance of the process. This book is about the importance of getting the procedure right. It begins with the first-ever request to be an arbitrator and takes the reader through all the stages of an arbitration. It points out some of the pitfalls and contains useful checklists. It gives advice on how to deal with conflicts, conduct hearings, deal with document requests, deal with experts, deal with challenges, agree on fees, draft procedural orders and awards, and how not to take on too much. Written by two experienced and highly respected international arbitrators, the book provides immeasurably valuable guidance on such details of the arbitral process as the following: terms of appointment; appointment of a tribunal secretary; steps to be taken before Procedural Order No. 1; written submissions; witnesses; third-party funding and contingency issues; keeping track of the money; interim measures; and expedited proceedings and early determination. Links to important documents are provided, and nineteen appendices include model forms for documents, agendas, orders, declarations, schedules, and protocols. Providing a veritable treasure trove of invaluable suggestions and hints which would only normally be known to arbitrators of many years’ standing, this eminently practical book will greatly enhance the ability of both new and experienced arbitrators to nip problems in the bud. It will also be of interest to counsel who appear in arbitrations and who may benefit from seeing things from the tribunal’s point of view. As this book will evolve into a ‘living’ book on the Kluwer website, the authors will continue to keep pace with developments in the field of international arbitration.
