Book Court Painting in Rajasthan

Download or read book Court Painting in Rajasthan written by Andrew Topsfield and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries the patronage of the Rajput rulers of Rajasthan gave rise to a rich profusion of distinctive painting styles, devoted both to the illustration of poetical and religious themes and to royal portraiture and the depiction of court life. The contributors to this book explore various topics of recent research which throw light on the major (and some minor) Rajastahani schools of painting and their social, historical, and religious background. The articles are based on material from a multitute of public and private collections in India and throughout the world, and wall-paintings in situ. Besides chapters on less familiar aspects of local painting styles, essays on individual illustrated manuscripts, and on artists, their families, and patrons are included.

Book The Intelligence of Tradition in Rajput Court Painting

Download or read book The Intelligence of Tradition in Rajput Court Painting written by Molly Emma Aitken and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genre of Rajput painting flourished between the 16th and 19th centuries in the kingdoms that ruled what is now the Indian state of Rajasthan (place of rajas). Rajput paintings depicted the nobility and court spectacle as well as scenes from Krishna’s life, the Hindu epics, and court poetry. Many Rajput kingdoms developed distinct styles, though they shared common conventions. This important book surveys the overall tradition of Indian Rajput painting, while developing new methods to ask unprecedented questions about meaning. Through a series of in-depth studies, Aitken shows how traditional formal devices served as vital components of narrative meaning, expressions of social unity, and rich sources of intellectual play. Supported by beautiful full-color illustrations of rare and often inaccessible paintings, Aitken’s study spans five centuries, providing a comprehensive and innovative look at the Rajasthan’s court painting traditions and their continued relevance to contemporary art.

Book Splendour of Rajasthani Painting

Download or read book Splendour of Rajasthani Painting written by Jayasiṃha Nīraja and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mughals Brought Miniature Painting, An Offshoot Of Manuscript Painting, To India In The 14Th-15Th Centuries. It Took Deep Root In What Is Known Today As Rajasthani Painting. Its Implantation In Rajasthan Is Mainly Due To The Close Political And Social Contacts Between The Mughal Rulers Of North India And Feudal Rajput Princelings Who Flourished In Northwestern India Between The 15Th And 18Th Centuries. Many Rajput Rulers And Their Courtiers Were Highly Cultivated, And Their Courts Were Centers Where The Arts And Artists Received Unstinted Encouragement From Their Royal Patrons. This Was Particularly So Of Painting, And What Began As An Offshoot Of Mughal Painting Because In The Years Between The Inception Of Mughal Rule And The British Occupation Of India From The 18Th Century, There Was A Rich Flowering Of Many Schools And Styles Of Miniature Painting Which Have Found Avid Admirers Among Connoisseurs Of Art The World Over. Unfortunately, Although Rajasthani Paintings Are Treasured Art Collectors Items Much Sought After By Discerning Lovers Of Art Because Of Their Intrinsic Merit, Little Effort Has Been Expended To Delve Deep Into The Various Modes Of This Painting And Present An Overall Picture Of The Numerous Schools, Styles And Substyles Which Are The Priceless Heritage Today Not Only Of Rajasthan, Their Place Of Birth, But Also Of India As A Whole. Art Experts, Mainly Foreign Savants, Have Written Knowledgeable Accounts About Various Aspects Of Rajasthani Painting, But Nobody, It Is Worth Recording, Has Undertaken To Produce A Comprehensive Study In Depth Of This Vast Cultural Field. This Is Absolutely Essential As No Study Of Indian Civilization Is Complete Without It. The Present Study Does Not Claim To Fulfil This Requirement. That Would Need Much More Intensive, Detailed And Patient Research. But It Provides A Good Point Of Takeoff For Such A Study. In Splendour Of Rajasthani Painting, Assembled Obviously With Great Care And Deep Love Of The Subject, Dr. Jai Singh Neeraj Has Laid The Ground Work For Such A Project. He Has Succeeded In Conveying To The Art-Loving Reader The Fact That Rajasthani Art Is A Many-Splendoured Thing That Deserves Much More Attention Than It Has Received So Far.

Book excerpt: About the Book : - The Rathore clan of Rajputs who ruled Marwar (Jodhpur) developed a strikingly individual style of painting that was interpreted in a host of different ways by local artists in the many small fiefdoms of the Rathore nobility. Artists trained at Mughal courts brought sophisticated concepts of portraiture and composition to Jodhpur in the 17th and 18th centuries; these ideas were combined with distinctive local styles and bold colour to form a uniquely lively school of painting. The first to feature a wide range of vibrant Marwar paintings in full colour, this book provides a complete survey of the development of this little-known school of Rajasthani painting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the finest holdings of Indian art in the West, the Kronos Collections are particularly distinguished for paintings made between the sixteenth and early nineteenth centuries for the Indian royal courts in Rajasthan and the Punjab Hills. These outstanding works, many of which are published and illustrated here for the first time, are characterized by their brilliant colors and vivid, powerful depictions of scenes from Hindu epics, mystical legends, and courtly life. They also present a new way of seeking the divine through a form of personal devotion—known as bhakti—that had permeated India’s Hindu community. While explaining the gods, demons, lovers, fantastical creatures, and mystical symbols that are central to literature and worship, this publication celebrates the diverse styles and traditions of Indian painting. Divine Pleasures features an informative entry for each work and two essays by scholar Terence McInerney that together outline the history of Indian painting and the Rajput courts, providing fresh insights and interpretations. Also included are a personal essay by expert and collector Steven M. Kossak and an examination of Hindu epic and myth in Mughal painting, which lays important foundations for Rajput painting, by curator Navina Najat Haidar. Through their research and observations, the authors deepen our understanding and underscore the significance of Indian painting. Divine Pleasures presents a nuanced view of a way of life intimately tied to the seasons, the arts, and the divine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "India retains one of the richest painting traditions in the history of global visual culture, one that both parallels aspects of European traditions and also diverges from it. While European artists venerated the landscape and landscape paintings, it is rare in the Indian tradition to find depictions of landscapes for their sheer beauty and mood, without religious or courtly significance. There is one glorious exception: Painters from the city of Udaipur in Northwestern India specialized in depicting places, including the courtly worlds and cities of rajas, sacred landscapes of many gods, and bazaars bustling with merchants, pilgrims, and craftsmen. Their court paintings and painted invitation scrolls displayed rich geographic information, notions of territory, and the bhāva, or feel, emotion, and mood of a place. This is the first book to use artistic representations of place to trace the major aesthetic, intellectual, and political shifts in South Asia over the long eighteenth century. While James Tod, the first British colonial agent based in Udaipur, established the region's reputation as a principality in a state of political and cultural deterioration, author Dipti Khera uses these paintings to suggest a counter-narrative of a prosperous region with beautiful and bountiful cities, and plentiful rains and lakes. She explores the perspectives of courtly communities, merchants, pilgrims, monks, laypeople, and officers, and the British East India Company's officers, explorers, and artists. Throughout, she draws new conclusions about the region's intellectual and artistic practices, and its shifts in political authority, mobility, and urbanity"--
