Oui , à la rigueur. On peut faire soi-même les exercices, et reconnaître les fautes, par la confrontation aux règles et à l'aide des corrigés placés à la fin du volume. Mais, pour cela, il faut une attention, une persévéran ce, une assiduité difficiles à obtenir, et la mémoire oppose de grandes résistances à une élude ainsi solitaire. Mais les maîtres sont si faciles à trouver pour l'enseignement élémentaire du latin ! Pas de frère, bon cinquième, qui ne puisse être un maître suffisant pour sa soeur. Dans les établissements, une religieuse, une sous -maîtresse intelligente , en prenant un peu d'avance sur ses écolières, peut apprendre elle-même en enseignant ; l'année d'après et pour recommencer le cours, la maîtresse, qui a débuté avec les élèves , se trouvera formée. Quoi qu'il en soit, il me sera agréable d'avoir ajouté ce travail a ceux qui ont rempli ma laborieuse retraite; d'avoir donné un nouveau témoignage démon dévouement à enseignement, qui a occupé ma vie active; d'appliquer enfin mes étude s classiques à faire mieux apprécier ce qui dépasse d'une grande hauteur l'érudition et les lettres profanes : j'entends la sainteté ci la beauté de la parole chrétienne. »

The writers include six Frenchwomen (Roland, d'Epinay, Stael, Genlis, Gouges, and an anonymous woman correspondent who called herself Henriette) and the English feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. The book constitutes an important contribution to French literature, women's studies, and eighteenth-century cultural studies. While a great deal has already been written on the individual women whom Trouille treats, what distinguishes this book is that it places multiple female subjects directly opposite Rousseau, and succeeds in showing that the relationship between mentor and student(s) is both multi-layered and fascinatingly complex.
