Book Coupled High Power Waveguide Laser Research

Download or read book Coupled High Power Waveguide Laser Research written by A. J. Cantor and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this program is to study, both from an experimental and theoretical perspective, coupled with power CO2 waveguide lasers. This study is concerned with, but not limited to, hollow-bore ridge waveguide laser arrays. The ability to achieve phase-locked operation of two-and three-element under a previous AFOSR contact. In the present program, we are exploring the scalability of the hollow-bore ridge waveguide array concept to larger linear arrays and two-dimensional arrays. This being accomplished by fabricating, operating and characterizing a variety of laser arrays and by conducting analyses to help interpret the observed operational characteristics and point the way to improvements in the performance of the laser arrays.

Book Coupled Waveguide Gas Laser Research

Download or read book Coupled Waveguide Gas Laser Research written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objectives of this program were to study and develop an understanding of the characteristics of coupled waveguide gas lasers and to improve their operating characteristics. A flexible test bed laser was designed, fabricated and used to evaluate both ceramic and metal waveguide array structures. The strong tendency to phase lock with adjacent channels out-of- phase was confirmed. Metal waveguide walls were shown to produce power output comparable to ceramic walls. A simple metal slab laser was demonstrated with good discharge and good mode characteristics, and an unstable resonator was used to produce the lowest order cosine-Gaussian mode. A technique of coupling discharge channels with slots in the slab waveguide walls was conceived and shown to lock all-in-phase preferentially over the out-of-phase configuration. A concept for an all-metal, low-cost, microwave-excited waveguide laser using either a simple slab waveguide or the slot coupled array was developed.

Book excerpt: Advances in High-Power Fiber and Diode Laser Engineering provides an overview of recent research trends in fiber and diode lasers and laser systems engineering. In recent years, many new fiber designs and fiber laser system strategies have emerged, targeting the mitigation of different problems which occur when standard optical fibers are used for making high-power lasers. Simultaneously, a lot of attention has been put to increasing the brightness and the output power of laser diodes. Both of these major laser development directions continue to advance at a rapid pace with the sole purpose of achieving higher power while having excellent beam quality. The book begins by introducing the principles of diode lasers and methods for improving their brightness. Later chapters cover quantum cascade lasers, diode pumped high power lasers, high average power LMA fiber amplifiers, high-power fiber lasers, beam combinable kilowatt all-fiber amplifiers, and applications of 2 μm thulium fiber lasers and high-power GHz linewidth diode lasers. Written by a team of authors with experience in academia and industrial research and development, and brought together by an expert editor, this book will be of use to anyone interested in laser systems development at the laboratory or commercial scale.

Book High Power Coupled Ridge Waveguide Semiconductor Laser Arrays

Download or read book High Power Coupled Ridge Waveguide Semiconductor Laser Arrays written by Y. Twu and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using index-guided ridge waveguide structures, we have obtained single-lobe far-field pattern from coupled multiple-stripe semiconductor laser arrays. A stable far-field pattern has been observed up to 250-mW peak pulsed power. This desired performance of a semiconductor laser array is achieved by intentional pumping of a laser array at coupling regions, which is possible in ridge waveguide structures. (Author).

Book Semiconductor Laser Engineering Reliability and Diagnostics

Download or read book Semiconductor Laser Engineering Reliability and Diagnostics written by Peter W. Epperlein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book provides a fully integrated novel approach to the development of high-power, single-transverse mode, edge-emitting diode lasers by addressing the complementary topics of device engineering, reliability engineering and device diagnostics in the same book, and thus closes the gap in the current book literature. Diode laser fundamentals are discussed, followed by an elaborate discussion of problem-oriented design guidelines and techniques, and by a systematic treatment of the origins of laser degradation and a thorough exploration of the engineering means to enhance the optical strength of the laser. Stability criteria of critical laser characteristics and key laser robustness factors are discussed along with clear design considerations in the context of reliability engineering approaches and models, and typical programs for reliability tests and laser product qualifications. Novel, advanced diagnostic methods are reviewed to discuss, for the first time in detail in book literature, performance- and reliability-impacting factors such as temperature, stress and material instabilities. Further key features include: practical design guidelines that consider also reliability related effects, key laser robustness factors, basic laser fabrication and packaging issues; detailed discussion of diagnostic investigations of diode lasers, the fundamentals of the applied approaches and techniques, many of them pioneered by the author to be fit-for-purpose and novel in the application; systematic insight into laser degradation modes such as catastrophic optical damage, and a wide range of technologies to increase the optical strength of diode lasers; coverage of basic concepts and techniques of laser reliability engineering with details on a standard commercial high power laser reliability test program. Semiconductor Laser Engineering, Reliability and Diagnostics reflects the extensive expertise of the author in the diode laser field both as a top scientific researcher as well as a key developer of high-power highly reliable devices. With invaluable practical advice, this new reference book is suited to practising researchers in diode laser technologies, and to postgraduate engineering students.

Book Analysis and Characterization of Slab coupled Optical Waveguide Amplifiers and Lasers

Download or read book Analysis and Characterization of Slab coupled Optical Waveguide Amplifiers and Lasers written by William Loh (Ph. D.) and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductor optical devices are important in the photonics industry due to their significant advantages in size, weight, and power consumption (SWAP) and to their capability for photonic integration. However, these devices traditionally suffer from low fiber coupling efficiency and have been limited to relatively low power applications. This thesis explores the potential of the slab-coupled optical waveguide (SCOW) semiconductor gain medium for use in high power optical amplifiers and external cavity lasers. The thesis begins by introducing the SCOW concept and describing the benefits of utilizing a low optical confinement design for high power operation. Detailed analysis and measurements of the output power, gain, and noise properties of slab-coupled optical waveguide amplifiers (SCOWAs) and slab-coupled optical waveguide external cavity lasers (SCOWECLs) are also presented. It will be shown that these devices not only exhibit Watt class output power with high coupling efficiency (> 90 %) but also demonstrate the capability for low noise operation.
