Book excerpt: A wealth of information on the wildlife, stories and history of the islands. For those wishing to visit in small boats or kayaks there are details of:? Landings? Camping? Drinking water? Tidal informationOileain is a detailed guide to almost every Irish offshore island. The guide is comprehensive, describing over 300 islands, big and small, far out to sea and close in by the shore, inhabited and uninhabited. Oileain tells it as it is, rock by rock, good and bad, pleasant and otherwise. It concentrates on landings and access generally, then adds information on camping, drinking water, tides, history, climbing, birds, whales, dolphins, legends or anything else of interest.Oileain will, I hope, appeal to all who go to sea in small boats, divers and yachtsmen as well as kayakers. The sheer level of detail contained in Oileain must surely throw new light on places they thought they knew well. It is not a book about kayaking. It so happens that a practical way of getting to islands is by kayak, and that is how the author gets about. Scuba divers and RIBs get in close too. Yachtsmen get about better than most, and they too enjoy exploring intensively from a dinghy. With the increasing availability of ferries, boatless people will also enjoy Oileain. Offshore islands are the last wilderness in Ireland. Hillwaking is now so popular that there are few untrampled mainland hills. Ninety per cent of offshore islands are uninhabited outside of the first fortnight in August, and eighty per cent even then. You won't meet many other people, if any at all, out beyond an Irish surf line. It is a time of change though, and holiday homes are very much the coming thing in some offshore areas. Sea going will never stop being a great adventure. Therefore, offshore islands are still the preserve of the very few. Now is a golden era for exploration.

Book Researching Scots Irish Ancestors

Download or read book Researching Scots Irish Ancestors written by William J. Roulston and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest frustrations for generations of genealogical researchers has been that reliable guidance on sources for perhaps the most critical period in the establishment of their family's links with Ulster, the period up to 1800, has proved to be so elusive. Not any more. This book can claim to be the first comprehensive guide for family historians searching for ancestors in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Ulster. Whether their ancestors are of English, Scottish, or Gaelic Irish origin, it will be of enormous value to anyone wishing to conduct research in Ulster prior to 1800. A comprehensive range of sources from the period 1600-1800 are identified and explained in very clear terms. Information on the whereabouts of these records and how they may be accessed is also provided. Equally important, there is guidance on how effectively they might be used. The appendices to the book include a full listing of pre-1800 church records for Ulster; a detailed description of nearly 250 collections of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century estate papers; and a summary breakdown of the sources available from this period for each parish in Ulster.

Book From Admiral to Cabin Boy

Download or read book From Admiral to Cabin Boy written by Barry Domvile and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first-hand account of imprisonment without trial under Britain's notorious World War II-era "Section 18b" regulation, written by the Admiral Sir Barry Edward Domvile, the highest ranking British armed forces officer to be detained for seeking friendship with Germany and opposing the outbreak of the war. This book, first published in 1947, starts with a short biographical review before moving on to a geopolitical assessment of Britain's overseas possessions. The author then discusses his efforts to create peace with Germany through his "The Link" organization, and how these efforts led to his arrest and detention in Brixton Prison for three years from 1940 to 1943. Along the way, Domvile reviews what he saw as the major force behind the war: a Judeo-Masonic conspiracy which he called "Judmas," which he said, "has wielded such a baneful influence in world history"--although he stated that most Freemasons were completely unaware of the plot. Detained in a cell next door to Sir Oswald Mosley, Domvile provides a fascinating insight into the conditions and arbitrary nature of the arrest procedure, which was carried out without evidence, court proceedings, or any evidence being supplied. Quotes: "The only 'offence' which could be justly laid at my door was that I was strongly opposed to the war, which I considered then, and consider still, was in the worst possible interests of the Empire, for the reasons already recorded. Holding these views, I founded the 'Link, ' and worked hard and successfully at its non-political activities. If this was a crime, then I am guilty; and proud of it." "The present war was brought about by Hitler's challenge to Judmas; he was the first man since Napoleon, with the courage to tackle it openly. His new economic and financial plans for Europe struck at the very roots of Judmas policy. It made war certain, if it could be arranged; it was arranged. There is no need to look further for any cause." "Churchill has told us himself that we entered the war voluntarily; that no British interest was threatened. Dear little Poland was the excuse this time; it was dear little Belgium upon the last occasion. All the old battle-cries were trotted out; freedom, liberty (18B was the exception that proves the rule) and, of course, religion." The interior is an exact replica of the original, along with the original cover, all digitally reprocessed to the highest standards.

Book The Irish and Anglo Irish Landed Gentry When Cromwell Came to Ireland Or a Supplement to Irish Pedigrees

Download or read book The Irish and Anglo Irish Landed Gentry When Cromwell Came to Ireland Or a Supplement to Irish Pedigrees written by John O'Hart and published by . This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is often considered a companion volume of O'Hart's, "Irish Pedigrees: the Orgin and Stem of the Irish Nation," 2 Volumes, the Third Edition of which was published in 1881, and provided the genealogies of the families which branched from that ancient stem; together with the genealogies of Anglo-Irish and Anglo-Norman families which settled in Ireland from time to time since the English invasion. In this Volume the author documents some 257 additional genealogies which were collected, most of them in the MSS. Library of Trinity College, or in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, since the Third Edition of Irish Pedigrees was compiled, with a few of the original genealogies contained in that Edition, corrected or enlarged. Also included within "The Irish and Anglo-Irish Landed Gentry" is an extensive Appendix, which provides transcriptions of primary sources destroyed by fire in 1922. The author has also included numerous lists of Forfeiting Proprietors, names included on "Transplanters' Certificates," lists relating to the seventeenth-century land settlements, lists of the Irish Brigades, and much, much more. Approximately 22,000 surname references. Paperback, (1884), repr. Appendices, Index, 792 pp.
