Download or read book The U n Decade For Women written by Arvonne S Fraser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The documents adopted by the United Nations World Conference on Women during the Decade for Women (1975-1985) set forth a policy agenda for national and local governments, international institutions, and women's groups worldwide. The dialogue among women at the nongovernmental forums held in tandem with these conferences served to identify, refine, and reassess the issues addressed in the official documents. In this volume, Dr. Fraser has condensed the four major documents of the Decade, retaining much of the original language, and describes the context in which agendas for policies, programs, and research were developed. The opening chapters offer a historical perspective on the establishment of International Women's Year, the Decade for Women, and the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Throughout the book the author analyzes the influence of Third World women on the formulation of the agenda and discusses the interaction between the official and NGO conferences. She concludes by assessing the results in policy and programmatic terms and by exploring their implications for the future.

Featuring an in-depth introduction to the material and its social and historical context, this four-volume set reprints eight years of the journal, making this rare resource available to students and researchers in a variety of disciplines. In addition to women's fight for the vote, "International Woman Suffrage 1913-1920" covered such highly controversial topics as the age of consent for girls, alcohol control, education of girls, new employment openings for women, divorce law reform, health insurance for mothers, maternity benefits, minimum wages, prostitution, women medical workers, women police, women politicians, and other subjects of debate. Truly global for its time, issues included articles by women from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bohemia, British India, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Rumania, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the USA.

This book was released on 2010-05-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuing under-representation of women in political and public life remains a matter of concern across a wide range of countries, including the UK and Ireland. Within the UK it is a topical issue as political parties currently debate strategies, often controversial, which will increase women's representation. At the same time, devolution has ushered in significant change in the level of women's representation in Scotland and Wales and improved representation for women in Northern Ireland. That such increases in women's representation in political institutions have been slow in coming is indisputable, given that full enfranchisement of women on equal terms with men was achieved in Ireland in 1921 and in the UK in 1928.
