Book Modern Dwellings in Town and Country Adapted to American Wants and Climate With a Treatise on Furniture and Decoration

Download or read book Modern Dwellings in Town and Country Adapted to American Wants and Climate With a Treatise on Furniture and Decoration written by Henry Hudson Holly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Dwellings in Town and Country Adapted to American Wants and Climate With a Treatise on Furniture and Decoration In the spring of 1876, I prepared an article on Country-houses for Harper's Magazine, which was followed by a series of papers on interiors, containing a few suggestions on household art in general. It then occurred to me that the importance of the subject would justify its treatment in a more extended form. With this view, I began the preparation of the present work, which, although it might have been extended to several volumes without exhausting the subject, will, I trust, prove a practical and reliable guide for those persons who wish to build, furnish, and beautify their houses without an extravagant outlay of money. In the following pages I have profited considerably by the writings of Eastlake and others. In some instances, I have quoted from The American Architect and London Building Heios, and also from a work of my own published in 1863, which has been for some years out of print. In regard to the designs, I must acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. II. F. Jelliffe, who rendered me great assistance in working them up, and to Mr. Charles Parsons, Superintendent of the Art Department at Harper & Brothers, who has added greatly to their attraction by the graceful introduction of suitable figures and scenery. I feel some hesitation in giving the cost of the various dwellings described, as the fluctuations in prices are such that the expense of building a house in any one year might not be a guide at another time. The estimates I have given are based upon the value of labor and material in the year 1878. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Walls and Molding

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Care for Old and Historic Wood and Plaster What are the best methods for removing stains from wood finishes? How can you determine the type of finish on your molding? How can you repair the cracks in your plaster cornice? You've been told you have "alligatored paint": what is it and what can you do about it? . Answers to these questions and hundreds more are found in this detailed guide to caring for and reviving old wood and plaster walls and moldings. Carefully shaped woodwork, delicate plaster molding and colorful painted finishes give unique character to the interiors of old buildings. Walls and Molding describes the history of these key features and clearly explains how to save and repair them. Written for homeowners and others responsible for the care of buildings from 50 to 250 years old, and based on the principles of preservation expressed in the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings, this authoritative handbook offers practical advice for all aspects of caring for old wood and plaster walls and molding. Detailed methods are included for diagnosing, cleaning, repairing and reconstructing wood panels and molding as well as patching and replastering walls -- all stressing the three-pronged approach of the National Park Service: repair, replace and, only as a last resort, re-create. The book includes extensive charts on finishes, wood and plaster problems, and safety precautions. Combining a look at past building techniques and modern rehabilitation procedures, Walls and Molding focuses on what can be done to preserve and enjoy the special interiors in old and historic buildings. Some 300 photographs and drawings, helpful checklists, a glossary of wall treatment terms, a suggested reading list and official preservation guidelines followed nationwide provide further ideas and guidance for planning an appropriate rehabilitation in your old or historic building.

Book Architecture in Indianapolis

Download or read book Architecture in Indianapolis written by James A. Glass and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a planned community, Indianapolis boasted finished frame and brick buildings from its beginning. Architects and builders drew on Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, French Second Empire, Gothic, Romanesque, and Italian Renaissance styles for commercial, industrial, public, and religious buildings and for residences. In Architecture in Indianapolis: 1820–1900, preservationist and architectural historian Dr. James Glass explores the rich variety of architecture that appeared during the city's first 80 years, to 1900. Glass explains how economic forces shaped building cycles, such as the Canal Era, the advent of railroads, the natural gas boom, and repeated recessions and recoveries. He describes 243 buildings that illustrate the styles that architects and builders incorporated into the designs that they devised in each era between 1820 and 1900. This book also documents the loss of distinctive 19th century architecture that has occurred in Indianapolis. It includes 373 photographs and drawings that depict the buildings described and locator maps that show where concentrations of buildings were constructed. Architecture in Indianapolis: 1820–1900 provides the first history of 19th-century architecture in the city and will serve as an indispensable reference for decades to come.
