Book Guidance and Counselling in Adult and Continuing Education

Download or read book Guidance and Counselling in Adult and Continuing Education written by Ray Woolfe and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational provision for adults (including counseling) only makes sense when viewed from a developmental life setting. Counselors working with adults must be aware of the adult life cycle as a process of continuing change and development. They must also realize that each individual life is lived through an opportunity structure. In other words, because the social context of an individual's life heavily influences his or her expectations and aspirations, adult development must be examined in terms of an interaction between psychological and sociological factors. Adult educators do not need special training or the title of "counselor" to use the the methods and skills of counseling in their work. It may be argued that the teaching of adults in itself constitutes a form of counseling. Counseling at a distance is an important and growing area for a large number of persons working in the field of continuing education for adults. Guidance and counseling can be conceived as opposite ends of a continuum concerned with the nature of the relationship between helpers and those seeking or needing help. Counselors of adults are called upon to provide information and counseling in a variety of areas, including work, unemployment, and retirement. (MN)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching the adult is more than a teacher-learner relationship. It is a symbiotic learning experience. The adults entering the classroom have an abundance of life experiences, a variety of educational backgrounds, diverse working skills, and differing needs and expectations for being there. You are not the teacher lecturing in front of the classroom, but rather serve as their guide, consultant, counselor, and support. You are there to hone their skills for questioning techniques, evaluating responses, and often assisting in the process of their decision-making. Some of your students may be older in years than you are-NOT TO WORRY! They are there to learn the process of educating themselves and are just as apprehensive as you are. Probably more so, they have not been in a classroom as long as you have. Enjoy the experience, you may learn more than you teach. I moften have.

Download or read book Self Esteem written by Matthew McKay and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-09-17 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-esteem is essential for psychological survival. It is an emotional sine qua non - without some measure of self-worth, life can be enormously painful, with many basic needs going unmet. One of the main factors differentiating humans from other animals is the awareness of self: the ability to form an identity and then attach a value to it. In other words, you have the capacity to define who you are and then decide if you like that identity or not. The problem of self-esteem is this human capacity for judgment. It's one thing to dislike certain colors, noises, shapes, or sensations. But when you reject parts of yourself, you greatly damage the psychological structures that literally keep you alive. Judging and rejecting yourself causes enormous pain. And in the same way that you would favor and protect a physical wound, you find yourself avoiding anything that might aggravate the pain of self-rejection in any way. You take fewer social, academic, or career risks. You make it more difficult for yourself to meet people, interview for a job, or push hard for something where you might not succeed. You limit your ability to open yourself with others, express your sexuality, be the center of attention, hear criticism, ask for help, or solve problems....This book is about stopping the judgments. It's about healing the old wounds of hurt and self-rejection. How you perceive and feel about yourself can change. And when those perceptions and feelings change, the ripple effect will touch every part of your life with a gradually expanding sense of freedom. ---- Self-Esteem.
