Book Roadside Safety Improvement Programs on Freeways

Download or read book Roadside Safety Improvement Programs on Freeways written by John C. Glennon and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1974-01-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents and presents the results of a study that establishes a rational approach to the development of highway safety improvement programs. A system has been devised for ranking improvements based on their costs and their effectiveness in reducing accidents. The cost- effectiveness analysis provides a framework for comparison of alternative actions on a common basis. The approach is described and illustrated by a comprehensive example. For derivation of the analysis approach, use was made of general or typical numerical values. By substitution of state or regional data, the approach can be converted into an analytical tool. The existing form and data have value in bringing out the probability aspects of roadside elements in safety.

Book Evaluation of Highway Safety Improvement Projects and Countermeasures

Download or read book Evaluation of Highway Safety Improvement Projects and Countermeasures written by Ioannis Tsapakis and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) is a core Federal-aid, state-administered program in which each state is required to develop and establish planning, implementation, and evaluation processes. The goal of evaluation activities is to determine if highway safety improvements are achieving the desired results and the investments are worthwhile. The goal of this study is to advance HSIP evaluation processes and practices at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and evaluate the safety and cost effectiveness of HSIP projects and countermeasures or work codes (WCs) that have been implemented in Texas over the last few years. This research involved: a) reviewing safety and cost effectiveness evaluation methods, state practices, and tools; b) gathering and compiling TxDOT data and assessing their appropriateness for supporting HSIP evaluations; c) developing safety and cost effectiveness evaluation tools for segments and intersections; and d) evaluating the effectiveness of implemented HSIP projects and countermeasures in Texas. The results show that the evaluated projects have been effective from both a safety and cost perspective in reducing target fatal, suspected serious injury, and non-incapacitating injury (KAB) crashes. The safety effectiveness index of 387 evaluated segment projects (treated as one group) was 0.84, and the corresponding index of 70 intersection projects (treated as one group) was 0.74, indicating an overall reduction in target KAB crashes after the projects were constructed. The benefit/cost ratio of all segment projects was 71.9 and that of all intersection projects (treated as one group) was 145.6.

Book Severity Indices for Roadside Features

Download or read book Severity Indices for Roadside Features written by Daniel S. Turner and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1994 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway administrators, safety officials, design engineers, traffic engineers, and analysts who are concerned with improving highway safety. Severity indices, which serve as indicators of the expected injury consequences of a crash, are an integral part of the analysis of proposed roadside safety improvements. Severity indices that have been developed by many states and research agencies are described, as are the issues associated with developing the values, and applying and evaluating the indices. The history of severity indices, the issues associated with estimating accident severity and associated costs, and the range of indices that have been developed are described. This publication of the Transportation Research Board also discusses the relationship of accident severity indices with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Roadside Design Guide and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) ROADSIDE computer program. While research since the 1960s has sought to quantify severity indices for a range of object types and impact conditions, there remains a wide variation in the values from which analysts may choose when performing cost effectiveness evaluations.
