Book Grass Pickerel Esox Americanus Vermiculatus

Book excerpt: The ecologically similar Chain Pickerel (Esox niger) is native only to Québec in Canada, but appears to be expanding into the range of the Grass Pickerel in Ontario, probably from populations in adjacent portions of New York State (Hoyle and Lake 2011). [...] Although the ranges of the Chain Pickerel and Grass Pickerel overlap in parts of the USA (Page and Burr 2011), little has been reported on their interactions. [...] Under climate change, impacts such as increases in water and air temperatures, changes (decreases) in water levels, shortening of the duration of ice cover, increases in the frequency of extreme weather events, emergence of diseases, and shifts in predator-prey dynamics may negatively impact native fishes (Lemmen and Warren 2004). [...] Based on an evaluation of the effects of climate change on the habitat of coastal wetland fishes in the Great Lakes, Doka et al. [...] Essentially preventive in nature, the list of species liable to be designated as threatened or vulnerable is an administrative and educational device designed to slow or even reverse the process of declines in abundance of species at risk.

Book Ecology of the Imperiled Grass Pickerel Esox Americanus Vermiculatus in Ontario

Download or read book Ecology of the Imperiled Grass Pickerel Esox Americanus Vermiculatus in Ontario written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater fishes are among the most imperiled organisms on Earth and understanding their life history is vital to conservation efforts. Grass Pickerel, a top predator, is a nationally imperiled fish that is found at the northern edge of its range, has a highly patchy distribution, and can be rare to abundant where found in Canada. The distribution of Grass Pickerel within a watershed was explained using generalized linear models and is largely driven by site-scale variables such as ample submerged aquatic vegetation, channel cover, and associated wetlands in the floodplain, but regional factors, presumably climate, appeared important as well. Additionally, Grass Pickerel has declined in an eastern Ontario population since 1960 and forage fishes have increased in richness and abundance. Changes in the fish community were evaluated using non-metric multidimensional scaling and are likely due to combined effects of land use changes and alterations to stream hydrology from beaver activity and variable climatic conditions. The results from this study are informative for habitat protection and mitigating threats to this species, but also make a case for improved, standardized monitoring and baseline data. Grass Pickerel populations in Ontario are at the periphery of the species' range and are, perhaps, the most important for the species persistence in a changing world.

Book Centrarchid Fishes

Download or read book Centrarchid Fishes written by Steven Cooke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centrarchid fishes, also known as freshwater sunfishes, include such prominent species as the Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass and Bluegill. They are endemic to Eastern North America where they form part of a multi-million dollar sports fishing industry, but they have also been widely introduced around the globe by recreational anglers, in aquaculture programs and by government fisheries agencies. Centrarchid Fishes provides comprehensive coverage of all major aspects of this ecologically and commercially important group of fishes. Coverage includes diversity, ecomorphology, phylogeny and genetics, hybridization, reproduction, early life history and recruitment, feeding and growth, ecology, migrations, bioenergetics, physiology, diseases, aquaculture, fisheries management and conservation. Chapters have been written by well-known and respected scientists and the whole has been drawn together by Professors Cooke and Philipp, themselves extremely well respected in the area of fisheries management and conservation. Centrarchid Fishes is an essential purchase for all fish biologists, ecologists, fisheries managers and fish farm personnel who work with centrarchid species across the globe.

Book Tropical Fish Otoliths Information for Assessment Management and Ecology

Download or read book Tropical Fish Otoliths Information for Assessment Management and Ecology written by Bridget S. Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-07 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques and theory for processing otoliths from tropical marine fish have developed only recently due to an historic misconception that these organisms could not be aged. Otoliths are the most commonly used structures from which daily, seasonal or annual records of a fish’s environmental history are inferred, and are also used as indicators of migration patterns, home range, spatial distribution, stock structure and life history events. A large proportion of projects undertaken on tropical marine organisms involve removal and processing of calcified structures such as otoliths, statoliths or vertebrae to retrieve biological, biochemical or genetic information. Current techniques and principles have evolved rapidly and are under constant modification and these differ among laboratories, and more particularly among species and within life history stages. Tropical fish otoliths: Information for assessment, management and ecology is a comprehensive description of the current status of knowledge about otoliths in the tropics. This book has contributions from leading experts in the field, encompassing a tropical perspective on daily and annual ageing in fish and invertebrates, microchemistry, interpreting otolith microstructure and using it to back-calculate life history events, and includes a treatise on the significance of validating periodicity in otoliths.

Book Aquatic Habitat Assessment

Download or read book Aquatic Habitat Assessment written by Mark B. Bain and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Habitat is now the basis of most impact assessments and resource inventories, and it is the basis of many species management plans, mitigation planning, and environmental regulation. Habitats are relatively stable through time, easily defined in intuitive physical terms, and provide a tangible resource for negotiations and decision making. Numerous and varied methods of analyzing and reporting habitat conditions have been developed by federal, state, provincial, and private agencies. Habitat assessment approaches vary greatly among regions of the continent. The great variability in methods and an unusually wide range of practices have impeded the ability of agencies to share and synthesize information. A diversity of methods is desirable in the initial stages of a rapidly developing field, but enough time has passed to assess the state-of-knowledge and identify the best of the currently used methods and techniques. This manual is intended to provide fisheries biologists with a limited set of techniques for obtaining aquatic habitat data. The manual also describes the range of information collected and used in agency habitat analyses. Agencies planning habitat programs should review the synthesis of established and documented methods being used in North America (Appendix 1) and the planning recommendations in Chapter 2. Then, the remaining chapters should be reviewed to determine what types of habitat data should be included in the agency's program.
