Book excerpt: The National Marine Conservation Areas System Plan is an important step in the process of creating a finite network of national marine conservation areas. The plan sets out an approach for the system's design in which Canada's three bordering oceans and the Great Lakes have been divided into 29 distinct marine regions, with a long-term goal of having a national marine conservation area within each region. The plan also attempts to portray each marine region with descriptions of its wildlife, marine and coastal environments, and current status of conservation areas in the region. The appendix includes a glossary and a list of marine-associated species assigned a status by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada.

Book excerpt: This book, published in two volumes, provides the most comprehensive review of lamprey biology since Hardisty and Potter’s “The Biology of Lampreys” published more than 30 years ago. This second volume offers a synthesis of topics related to the lamprey gonad (e.g., lamprey sex ratios, sex determination and sex differentiation, sexual maturation, and sex steroids), the artifical propagation of lampreys, post-metamorphic feeding and the evolution of alternative feeding and migratory types, the history and status of sea lamprey control in the Laurentian Great Lakes and Lake Champlain, and an overview of contributions of lamprey developmental studies for understanding vertebrate evolution.

Download or read book Conservation Biology written by Andrew S. Pullin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-27 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation biology is fast emerging as a major new discipline, which incorporates biological principles in the design of effective strategies for the sustainable management of populations, species and entire ecosystems. This beautifully illustrated textbook introduces students to conservation biology, the science of preserving biodiversity. It begins by taking the reader on a tour of the many and varied ecosystems of our planet, providing a setting in which to explore the factors that have led to the alarming loss of biodiversity that we now see. In particular the fundamental problems of habitat loss and fragmentation, habitat disturbance and the non-sustainable exploitation of species in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are explored. The methods that have been developed to address these problems, from the most traditional forms of conservation, to new approaches at genetic to landscape scales are then discussed, showing how the science can be put into practice.
