Its historical range is limited to lowland riparian forests and marshes in western North America. In Canada, the species is restricted to the Fraser lowland of south-western British Columbia. This report reviews the conservation status of this species. It includes information on the shrew's geographic distribution, population size and trends, protection status, habitat, general biology, factors limiting the shrew population size and distribution, and the special significance of the species for Canada. Concludes with discussion of the current consensus regarding the status of the species and a proposed conservation designation.

This mammal was designated as Endangered by Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) in 2006. This document identifies the recovery strategies that are deemed necessary, based on the best available scientific and traditional information, to recover Pacific water shrew populations in British Columbia. The overall goal for recovery of the Pacific water shrew in B.C. is to halt the decline of Pacific water shrew and ensure a self-sustaining population within secure habitat throughout its current and historical range in Canada, where habitat still exists or can be restored (achieved within 10 years).--Document.
