The main technique used is pseudodifferential calculus, including global and semiclassical variants. The main results concern the meromorphic continuation of the spectral zeta function associated with the spectrum, and the localization (and the multiplicity) of the eigenvalues of such systems, described in terms of “classical” invariants (such as the periods of the periodic trajectories of the bicharacteristic flow associated with the eiganvalues of the symbol). The book utilizes techniques that are very powerful and flexible and presents an approach that could also be used for a variety of other problems. It also features expositions on different results throughout the literature.

This research was based on the transfer of knowledge from members of the Albanian Diaspora in Italy (university students, young architects and researchers) to their home country. This unique process blazed a trail in the Albania-related studies by creating a methodology, which could be replicated not only in Albanian rural contexts, but also elsewhere. The book constitutes a structured tool for generating sustainable and socially inclusive territorial development processes in five lesser-known Albanian cultural sites. Their tangible and intangible cultural heritage was seen as a driving factor for triggering development processes aimed at improving the inhabitants’ quality of life and strengthening local identity and social networks. The 4th Symposium was held in Oxford in April 2002, and the proceedings that follow comprise thirty-one papers, covering archaeological dating research from the Altai to Antarctica, and from the Palaeolithic to the Medieval.

Thermodynamics, based on the ideal gas thermometer, is related to Gibb's statistical mechanics through the use of Nosé-Hoover heat reservoirs. These reservoirs use integral feedback to control temperature. The same approach is carried through to the simulation and analysis of nonequilibrium mass, momentum, and energy flows. Such a unified approach makes possible consistent mechanical definitions of temperature, stress, and heat flux which lead to a microscopic demonstration of the Second Law of Thermodynamics directly from mechanics. The intimate connection linking Lyapunov-unstable microscopic motions to macroscopic dissipative flows through multifractal phase-space structures is illustrated with many examples from the recent literature. The book is well-suited for undergraduate courses in advanced thermodynamics, statistical mechanic and transport theory, and graduate courses in physics and chemistry.
