Book excerpt: The data herein presented on the compositions and properties of the corrosion-resisting and heat-resisting chromium and chromium-nickel steels have been assembled by Subcommittee I on Classification of Data, of Committee A-10 on Iron-Chromium, Iron-Chromium-Nickel, and Related Alloys, of the American Society for Testing Materials. The data in this publication represent a revision of corresponding data given in the "Symposium on Corrosion-Resistant, Heat-Resistant, and Electrical-Resistance Alloys," held in 1924, and the "Tables of Chemical Compositions, Physical and Mechanical Properties, and Corrosion-Resistant Properties of Corrosion-Resistant and Heat-Resistant Alloys," published by the A.S.T.M. in 1930. In these earlier publications data were presented on a broad range of materials which included both ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, as well as the stainless steels. Because of the tremendous increase in the commercial importance of the stainless steels during recent years, it was decided that their properties should be tabulated in a separate publication.

Today, copper is one of the most commonly used metals in the world; 24 million tons are consumed worldwide. A wide variety of copper alloys are used in a range of applications. As well as good mechanical properties, the excellent electrical conductivity and thermal conduction are reasons copper alloys are deployed in many industrial fields. Copper plays a role in electronic and electrical applications and all forms of heat transfer. In automobiles as well as in houses copper could not be replaced. In the sanitary industry copper and brass are well established, for example, drinking water pipes have been used for decades without problems. While the corrosion resistance of copper and its alloys is excellent in unpolluted air and drinking water, corrosion rates in impure environments can be much higher and lead to severe material damage. Corrosion is a system property, so it is important to find the right copper material with regard to the environmental conditions it will be exposed to. Corrosion resistance of the gamma-phase alloys appesrs to be improved when subjected to s neutron field; this is attributed to an irrsdiation induced stabilization of the gamma phases. The U/ sub 3/Si alloy, on the other hand, suffered severe deterioration, particularly of corrosion resistance. Changes in electrical resistivity, hardness, mechanical properties, and crystal structure are presented and the mechanisms producing the observed changes discussed.
