Book Ecological Model Types

Download or read book Ecological Model Types written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Model Types brings an understanding on how to quantitatively analyze complex and dynamic ecosystems with the tools available today. Ecosystem studies widely use the notions of order, complexity, randomness, and organization, and are used interchangeably in literature, which causes much confusion. Better models synthesize our knowledge on ecosystems and their environmental problems, in contrast to statistical analysis, which only reveal the relationships between the data. This book brings together experts on ecological models to create a definitive work on how to understand our complex Earth. - Bridges the gap between statistical analysis and synthesis of data, enhancing our understanding about ecosystems and their environmental problems - Helps readers understand complex ecosystems by walking through the best modeling options to analyze and predict environmental effects - Provides a detailed review of 14 model types, covering the breadth of options available for analysis at this time

Book Challenges and Emerging Issues on Firefighter s Toxic Chemical Exposure Smoke Chemicals Contaminated PPE and Off gassing

Download or read book Challenges and Emerging Issues on Firefighter s Toxic Chemical Exposure Smoke Chemicals Contaminated PPE and Off gassing written by Guowen Song and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-08-02 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toxic chemicals, either from fire ground combustion, contaminated PPE, or off-gassing from PPE material and chemical finishing have become the leading concern for the long-term health of firefighters. Exposure to fine smoke particles and toxic chemicals released from fire scenes can result in cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other pathological diseases, and minimizing this exposure has become a health priority for the firefighter. Firefighters face exposure to smoke at fire grounds and to contaminants in fire stations, vehicles, and even their homes because of resuspended fine particles or released volatile chemicals from contaminated PPE.

Book Exposure and Risk Assessment of Chemical Pollution Contemporary Methodology

Download or read book Exposure and Risk Assessment of Chemical Pollution Contemporary Methodology written by Mahmoud A. Hassanien and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains the contributions at the NATO Study Institute on Exposure and Risk Assessment of Chemical Pollution – Contemporary Methodology, which took place in Sofia – Borovetz, Bulgaria, July 1–10, 2008. Rapid advances in mathematics, computer science and molecular biology and chemistry have lead to the development in of a new branch of toxicology called Computational Toxicology. This emerging field is addressing the estimation and prediction of exposure risk and effects of chemicals based on experimental data, measured concentration and biological mechanisms and computational models of biological systems. Mathematical models are also being used to predict the fate and transport of substances in the environment. Because this area is still in its infancy, there has been limited application from governmental agencies to regulating controllable processes, such as registration of new chemicals, determination of estimated exposure and risk based limits and maximum acceptable concentrations in different compartments of the environment – ambient air, waters, soil and food products. However, this is soon to change as the ability to collect, analyze and interpret the required information is becoming increasingly more efficient and cost effective. Full implementation of the new processes have to involve education on both part of the experimentalists who are generating the data and the models, and the risk assessors who will use them to better protect human health and the environment.

Book Developments in Sustainable Chemical and Bioprocess Technology

Download or read book Developments in Sustainable Chemical and Bioprocess Technology written by Ravindra Pogaku and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental sustainability and development is of critical importance. Technological advances in the production of new energy sources are making their way into our lives in more and more depth every day. However, there is an urgent need to address the technological challenges and advancement of the various chemical and bio-processes to maintain the dynamic sustainability of our energy needs. Toward that end, an attempt is being made to look at recent advances, key issues still faced and where possible, offer suggestions on alternative technologies to optimize sustainable processes. Still considered a new area of science, energy sources themselves are still being 'discovered'...meaning, what is financially viable in the current marketplace is changing. For example, energy from plants has not been financially viable in the past because of the high cost of growing, harvesting, breaking down cell walls, disposal of waste products, etc. Materials used to derive energy from sustainable resources is changing, making previously high-cost processes more efficient. It is crucial that the industry as a while works in tandem to develop crops that new technological advances make financially feasible. This book will cover recent advances in the chemicals, bioprocesses and other materials used in growing and extracting energy from sustainable products. Membrane/cell wall digestion issues will also be covered as well as recovering mamixal amounts of energy from sources to limit waste. Finally a section on safety and control will be presented with has been poorly covered in other publications.

Book Human Health Risk Assessment of Toxic Chemical Pollutants in Stormwater

Download or read book Human Health Risk Assessment of Toxic Chemical Pollutants in Stormwater written by Yukun Ma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-12 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed analysis in relation to human health risk assessment of the main toxic chemical pollutants in urban stormwater generated from urban traffic and land use activities. The knowledge presented in this book was derived based on comprehensive experimental investigations including field sampling, laboratory testing, mathematical modelling, spatial analysis and multivariate and univariate statistical data analyses. The key highlights of the book include the quantitative assessment of the human health risk posed by key toxic chemical pollutants in urban stormwater and the development of linkages between risk and traffic and land use. Additionally, a suite of mathematical equations are presented to predict human health risk based on traffic and land use characteristics through mathematical modelling. These outcomes can significantly assist in effective stormwater risk management under changing traffic and land use in the urban environment. The knowledge presented is of particular interest to readers such as stormwater treatment design specialists, decision-makers and urban planners since these outcomes provide practical suggestions and recommendations for effective urban stormwater treatment design.
