Book Corrosion prevention of magnesium alloys

Download or read book Corrosion prevention of magnesium alloys written by G.-L. Song and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-02-22 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thin E-coating can be rapidly deposited on the surface of a Mg alloy in a cathodic E-coating bath without applying any current or potential. The selectively self-deposited coating results from the high surface alkalinity of Mg. The ‘electroless’ E-coating pre-film can offer adequate corrosion protection for Mg alloys. The stability of the film can be further improved significantly after curing. The coating can be either a temporary or permanent layer. It may also be used to pre-treat a Mg alloy surface for a normal E-coating or powder coating. Such a simple dipping step can even seal porous phosphating or anodizing coatings on Mg alloys.

Book PECVD formed Polymer Coatings for the Corrosion Protection of Biocompatible Magnesium Alloy WE43

Download or read book PECVD formed Polymer Coatings for the Corrosion Protection of Biocompatible Magnesium Alloy WE43 written by Zhuoya Deng and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Magnesium (Mg) alloys have gained increasing attention for biomedical applications recently. Current permanently-implanted metallic implants for orthopaedic and cardiovascular applications could cause a range of complications, such as endothelial dysfunction, restenosis and local inflammation, which require subsequent surgical interventions. Magnesium and its alloys may be applied as potential biodegradable materials for such applications due to their good mechanical properties, biocompatibility and degradability. Mg alloy degrades via corrosion reaction in the body and should disappear once it finishes surgical fixation. However, the rapid degradation (corrosion) rate of Mg-based implants in the physiological environment poses challenge of their commercialization and widespread use. Formation of anti-corrosive coating is an effective technique to control the corrosion rate of Mg and its alloy. This research focused on investigating the possibility of using biocompatible plasma polymer coatings fabricated by PECVD under various deposition condition, varying from pressure, deposition time and gas ratio to control degradation rate of a biocompatible Mg alloy WE43. Preliminary measurements confirmed that a PECVD coating produced from 1,3-butadiene and ammonia (PPB:N) offered best anti-corrosive properties, and this coating was subsequently chosen for further optimization and characterization for its anti-corrosive properties. It was found that the anti-corrosive properties of the PPB:N depend on both the deposition time and deposition pressure. The optimum coating-formation conditions were determined to be at 100 Pa and 40 minutes of deposition. The coating produced under these conditions offered a protection efficiency of 99.7% after 20 hours of immersion in PBS. Long-term tests evidenced that the PPB:N coating offered a 92% of protection efficiency even after 10 days of immersion in corrosive PBS. Hence, this coating can be considered as a good candidate for control of corrosion rate of a biomedical grade Mg alloy WE43." --

Book Corrosion Behavior of Microarc Oxidation and Polycaprolactone Coatings Applied to AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Evaluated in Simulated Body Fluid and Balanced Salt Solution

Download or read book Corrosion Behavior of Microarc Oxidation and Polycaprolactone Coatings Applied to AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Evaluated in Simulated Body Fluid and Balanced Salt Solution written by Benjamin M. Wilke and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research in orthopedic implant materials has focused on the use of magnesium alloys as a base material due to its mechanical properties similar to that of human bone. Rapid corrosion of magnesium materials in aqueous environments poses a significant hurdle to their application as a biomedical implant. A variety of coatings have been shown to improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium based materials in simulated body fluid environments including microarc oxidation and polymer coatings. However, formulation and corrosion rates vary significantly between solution types. Furthermore, in vivo results have shown that many common in vitro solutions over estimate corrosion rates. In addition to variations between solutions needing to be resolved, there has been little work performed to characterize large sample corrosion under stress. This is an essential step in evaluating concept performance at a macro scale, for application as a human implant. The experiments performed and presented in this thesis primarily involve the comparison of conventional simulated body fluid (c-SBF) and Earle's balanced salt solution (EBSS). Samples evaluated in these environments are microarc oxidation (MAO) coated AZ31 magnesium alloy and polycaprolactone dip-coated AZ31. MAO coated samples were created for a range of process settings to observe the effect of processing on corrosion performance. A dependence of MAO coating thickness on process voltage was found which augmented the initial corrosion resistance values observed via electrochemical testing. Both MAO and PCL coatings were found to improve the corrosion resistance of the samples as compared to uncoated AZ31. It was found that all variations (MAO, PCL, and uncoated) showed a reduced corrosion rate in EBSS as compared to c-SBF. This corrosion reduction was apparent through potentiodynamic scanning, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and visual inspection. Preliminary mechanical corrosion results, in the form of constant extension testing, showed no dependence of corrosion on stress level. Future work may be aimed towards expanding modes of mechanical testing and further refining simulated body fluids to fit with in vivo test results.

Book Corrosion Protection of Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys

Download or read book Corrosion Protection of Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys written by E. L. White and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memorandum deals with the corrosion protection of magnesium and magnesium alloys. The corrosion resistance of these alloys in many natural environments, while not as good as that of copper, nickel, stainless steel, and aluminum, is in the same range as that of the iron and plain carbon steels. Some type of additional corrosion protection is often necessary and, as with steel, the protective measures usually involve some type of coating system and/or surface treatments. Also, magnesium can suffer accelerated attack when coupled, in the presence of a conductive electrolyte, to most metals below it in the galvanic series. This galvanic effect complicates the problem of corrosion protection. A number of coating systems have been proposed and used satisfactorily. Depending upon the application, these coating systems include the use of conversion coatings, organic coatings, metallic coatings, and others. In addition, special designs can be employed to improve the over-all corrosion resistance of the systems. This memorandum describes many of the coating systems and design methods which are used to reduce corrosive attack on both galvanically coupled and uncoupled magnesium assembliesd (Author).
