Book The Sherman Letters

Download or read book The Sherman Letters written by Rachel Sherman Thorndike and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sherman Letters: Correspondence Between General and Senator Sherman From 1837 to 1891 IN the year 1836 William Tecumseh Sherman, then a lad of sixteen, entered West Point as a cadet. He was appointed from his native State, Ohio. He travelled east by stage, spent a week at Washington, a few days in Philadelphia, and another week in New York, thus becoming, for his age and time, a much-travelled boy. He is described as being a tall, slim, loose-jointed lad, with red hair, fair, burned skin, and piercing black eyes. He himself says that in New York some of his relations looked upon him as an untamed animal just caught in the Far West. He must indeed have had a rural look. That his strong individuality and intense interest in life were even then developed none who knew him later can doubt. His earliest letters are labored and boyish. He had not acquired a vocabulary or the fluency of pen which later developed itself to an almost wonderful degree. He was nervous and quick in all his thoughts and actions. He wrote a running hand, difficult to read, and rendered so by the race his pen had to run with his thoughts. His boyish letters are interesting, therefore, only because they are his, and I have quoted but few of them. He was three years older than his brother John. Excerpt: ... private and official /. correspondence of gen. benjamin F. butler From General Butler to General Grant Unofficial. Head Quarters, August 4,1864 My Dear Sir: I have been reading the newspaper accounts of the Petersburg affair, and beg leave to call your attention to the blame cast upon the negro troops. They ought to bear all their share of the odium which attaches to the failure, but no more. If it be true, as alleged, that the failure is owing to their want of courage, conduct, and inefficiency, then it would seem that the negro could never make a soldier, and the policy of the Government upon this subject is wrong and should at once be changed. If they are not to blame, that fact, it is respectfully suggested, should be ascertained and declared in the most solemn form of military investigation and report. Upon this precise movement of these troops at Petersburg I have no opinion, because I do not know the fact. Certain it is that there is fault somewhere; and I think, and venture most respectfully to suggest that it is due to yourself, the army, and the country that the fault should be ascertained, so that the remedy may be applied either mediately or immediately by yourself or the War Department, if the matter is susceptible either of amendment or correction. If the whole affair can be investigated, it will be found that the plan of movement was excellent, that the strategy which drew Lee's attention to the north side of the James accomplished all that could be desired in drawing away his troops. This much I know, for a portion of this it was my business to know. Why, then, did the plan fail? Clearly for want of proper and efficient execution. Was that failure of execution inherent and irremediable in the very nature of things, and...

Book Memoirs and Correspondence of Major General Sir William Nott

Download or read book Memoirs and Correspondence of Major General Sir William Nott written by Sir William Nott and published by . This book was released on 1854 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Nott (1782-1845) was an army officer in the East India Company who commanded British and Anglo-Indian forces in the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). He was born into a farm family of modest means in Glamorganshire, Wales, and received a limited elementary education. He embarked for India in 1800, and received a commission in the army of the East India Company. For many years he commanded a succession of native infantry regiments. Throughout his military career he appreciated the military qualities of the sepoy (Indian soldiers serving in the army of the East India Company), which he compared favorably with those of the British soldier. A colonel before the Anglo-Afghan War began, Nott soon was promoted to general. He commanded British and native troops in several successful engagements and on January 13, 1842, was appointed commander of all British and Anglo-Indian troops in Lower Afghanistan and Sind. He won a major victory over Afghan forces near Ghazni on August 30, 1842, which led to the capture of Kabul and ultimately termination of the war. After service as resident at the court of Lucknow, Nott returned to England, where within two years he died. This book was compiled posthumously by J.H. Stocqueler, the author of several books of biography and British military history, using documents in the possession of Nott's daughters. Volume two of the work has a long appendix containing documents relevant to Nott's activities in Afghanistan, some by Nott himself but most by other officers. Nott is regarded by historians as by far the best British general in the Anglo-Afghan War.
