A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Given insufficient physical activity is linked to multiple chronic diseases and mortality, increasing physical activity has become a public health priority. To inform future interventions, modifiable correlates and determinants of physical activity need to be identified. Local, national, and international policy documents have highlighted the importance of creating active living environments that promote regular physical activity. While several behvioural settings exist, neighbourhoods provide opportunities for both structured and unstructured physical activity opportunities for multiple ages. However, before modifying existing environments or developing new active living environments, it is first important to consider the features that promote physical activity. Further, for active living environments to have a sustainable impact, identifying features that promote physical activity across multiple ages groups is important. Therefore, the overall purpose of this dissertation is to identify environmental correlates of physical activity across multiple age groups (preschool children, school-aged children, adolescents, adults) within the neighbourhood setting. Methods: Three studies were conducted. In study one, parents were surveyed regarding the features of their neighbourhood environment that they perceived as important to their own physical activity as well as their children's physical activity and parent-child coactivity. In study two, associations of objectively measured walkability and parental perceptions of the environment with children's physical activity (i.e., daily step counts, parent reported physical activity) were examined using data from the SHAPES of Things to Come project. In study three, the longitudinal associations between the objectively measured built environment surrounding schools and self-reported physical activity and active mode of transport among adolescents were examined using data from the COMPASS project. Results: In study 1, several neighbourhood features, related to destinations, design, social, safety and aesthetics, were identified by the majority of parents as important for their own physical activity, their child's active play, and parent-child coactivity. There were several significant differences in the proportions of parents who identified features as relevant between activity types (parent physical activity, child active play, parent-child coactivity). Few differences were observed by household income. In study two, objectively measured walkability was not associated with children's steps or parent reported physical activity. However, significant associations were observed for neighbourhood aesthetics and traffic hazards with parental reported physical activity, along with walking and cycling infrastructure during the winter months. In study 3, significant associations were observed between retail-, park-, and recreation center- densities along with Walk Scores in the school neighbourhood environment with adolescent MVPA and active school travel. Students attending schools in environments considered very walkable had an increased likelihood of active school travel and maintained higher MVPA over time. Conclusion: Across all three studies, there is evidence to suggest features that support walking is important for preschool children's active play, parents' recreational physical activity and coactivity with their children, along with school-aged children's parent reported physical activity, and adolescent's self-reported active school travel and MVPA. Finding ways to incorporate features that support walking into home and school neighbourhoods could promote physical activity across age groups. More longitudinal research that accounts for behavioural and context-specificity, multiple activity settings and their characteristics, and intra- and inter- personal characteristics is needed.

The growing population of children and adolescents with low physical activity levels and poor psychosocial health necessitates accessible interventions that promote well-being. Electronic health (eHealth) physical activity interventions are a promising choice due to their scalability and accessibility. This dissertation examined the feasibility and effects of ACTIWEB-PA, a remotely delivered, web-based movement integration program for children while also assessing the correlates of physical activity and sedentary behavior in youth, providing valuable insights for future intervention design. Methods. Active Children through In-home Web-based Physical Activity (ACTIWEB-PA) pilot randomized controlled trial: Eighty-two insufficiently active children aged 8-11 years were randomized to either an exercise intervention group or a wait-list control group. The intervention was a 12-week-long, self-directed, remotely delivered web-based movement integration program offered through the UNICEF Kid Power website. Feasibility was assessed with recruitment, retention, and intervention adherence rates. Intervention satisfaction was assessed using surveys and qualitatively, with end-of-study interviews. Intervention effects on physical activity and psychosocial health outcomes were assessed using mixed models. Survey of Health of Wisconsin (SHOW) data study: Data from 308, 6-17-year-olds with valid accelerometer wear time from wave II of SHOW were used to examine potential correlates of accelerometer measured physical activity and sedentary behavior. Mixed models were used to identify sociodemographic, anthropometric, neighborhood, screen-time, and parental factors associated with the outcomes. Results. ACTIWEB-PA study: The mean age of participants was 9.2℗ł1.1 years and 51.2% were female. A recruitment rate of 73.6% was obtained. Follow-up surveys were completed by 93.9% participants (retention rate-1) and valid follow-up accelerometer wear was completed by 80.5% participants (retention rate-2). In addition, 69.4% had high program adherence in the exercise intervention group. Intervention was found to be appropriate, pragmatic, and enjoyable based on qualitative analysis. Suggestions to improve novelty, variety, and incorporating peer participation were made by families. Adjusting for baseline imbalances in outcomes, there were no significant intervention effects on the primary outcomes of physical activity. Among the secondary outcomes, only behavioral adjustment sub-scale of the Piers Harris Self-Concept scale saw significant positive improvements (p = 0.03). Our results were indicative of a gender-based variation in physical activity outcomes. SHOW data study: Mixed model analyses showed non-significant but meaningful associations of minutes/day of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) with screen time (p = 0.06) and Walk Score (p = 0.09). In addition, BMI (p = 0.04) of the participant was significantly associated while gender (p = 0.16) was non-significantly associated with minutes/day of sedentary bouts. Conclusion: The ACTIWEB-PA study was found to be feasible, and the movement integration program had high adherence rates and was deemed acceptable. The intervention did not impact children's physical activity and psychosocial health outcomes significantly. Nevertheless, given the increasing interest in and utilization of remotely delivered eHealth interventions to promote physical activity among children, this study offers valuable insights for optimizing future trials in this field. Important correlates of objectively measured MVPA and sedentary bouts in children and adolescents were also identified, including the modifiable screen time. These findings together advance the field of children's physical activity epidemiology and provide insights to inform the design of future interventions aimed at promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior in children and adolescents.

To fill this gap, this book examines components necessary to conduct a rigorous integrative review from formulating questions through dissemination of the results of the review. An integrative review is considered by many as an actual research study, hence it should be approached following established research methods involving well‐defined steps. The integrative review is often compared with the systematic review. Both are used in healthcare research and follow a systematic process in reviewing literature and developing recommendations, but there are important differences that are addressed in the book. Evidence-based practice (EBP) demands high quality, rigorous evidence for nurse clinicians to make informed decisions with and for their patients. In nursing education, the integrative review is a frequent capstone project for graduate students and forms the basis for many doctoral projects. The Integrative review process should be valid, reliable and transparent and this book provides clear guidelines for writing an integrative review for students, educators, clinicians, and researchers. This book is a useful addition to courses for both undergraduate and graduate level writers of integrative reviews. John Nicholls explores the conditions that cause students to lose their unselfconscious involvement in a game or task and become concerned with how they are stacking up against others. Charting the development of children's concepts of luck, effort, and ability, he argues that with age they are increasingly prone to take superiority over others as the definition of success. An emphasis on interpersonal competition, which permeates Western society, exacerbates this egotistical tendency and results in diminished accomplishment and alienation from school. To overcome these problems, Nicholls argues, we must "become as little children" for whom absorption in exploration and accomplishment come naturally, even when those around them are more competent. This ideal is unlikely to be promoted through technical approaches to education, or by the current emphasis on the role of education in economic development. Instead, Nicholls calls for a progressive approach to education. Difficult though it is to implement, this approach is most likely to increase equality of motivation for intellectual development, substantial accomplishment, satisfaction in work, and more productive relations with others. These are important ideas for anyone interested in achievement motivation, for those professionally involved in education, and for nonspecialists interested in, or worried about, how we educate our children.
