Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coronary angioplasty is a procedure used to widen blocked or narrowed coronary arteries, the main blood vessels supplying the heart. The term 'angioplasty' means using a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery. However, most modern angioplasty procedures also involve inserting a short wire-mesh tube, called a stent, into the artery during the procedure. The stent is left in place permanently to allow blood to flow more freely (NHS Choices). This book is a complete guide to the practice of coronary angioplasty for practising cardiologists and trainees. Beginning with an introduction to the evolution of the technique and the fundamentals of stent design, each of the following chapters provides in depth detail on angioplasty procedures for different disorders. The final sections discuss potential complications, rehabilitation, outcomes, and the future of angioplasty. This comprehensive text is highly illustrated with clinical photographs, diagrams and tables to enhance learning. Key Points Comprehensive guide to coronary angioplasty for clinicians and trainees Describes the complete evolution of the technique, from its beginnings to future developments Covers angioplasty procedures for many different disorders Highly illustrated with clinical photographs, diagrams and tables

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This quick-reference handbook offers a concise and practical review of key aspects of the treatment of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the era of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). In the context of STEMI, PPCI is the preferred mode of emergency revascularization. Access to PPCI is rapidly increasing and is now routinely practiced in both general and specialist hospitals and there has been a recent emphasis on developing STEMI networks to enhance and expedite the referral pathway. This coupled with concurrent developments to enhance the safety and efficacy of the PPCI procedure has heralded an era where STEMI interventions are increasingly considered an important subspecialty within interventional cardiology. Written by leading cardiologists who have been instrumental in the adoption of PPCI in their respective institutions, the book provides junior and senior cardiologists alike with insightful and thought-provoking tips and tricks to enhance the success of PPCI procedures, which may in turn translate into direct improvements in outcomes. The book is also relevant for healthcare providers and emergency department physicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic total occlusions (CTO) are common, and found in approximately one third of patients with significant coronary artery disease who undergo angiography. Over the past 20 years, CTO lesions have represented the most difficult anatomy for treatment — with lower success rates and higher complication rates. Chronic Total Occlusions provides interventionalists insight into the world of CTOs with introductory chapters that describe the pathology and indications of CTOs along with a review of clinical trials. Imaging modalities including CT angiography, magnetic navigation wire, and IVUS guided recanalization of CTO are also introduced, together with information on new wires technology and devices for CTOs. With numerous illustrations of these devices, technologies, and strategies to improve the CTO success rate, this clinical guide, headed up by Ron Waksman, will prove to be the ideal companion for interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons who are required to perform angioplasty and coronary stenting.

Book Practice of Coronary Angioplasty

Download or read book Practice of Coronary Angioplasty written by Thomas Ischinger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 7 years of clinical use, percutaneous transluminal coronary angio plasty (PTCA) has now found worldwide acceptance, and its basic techniques are well standardized. A growing number of invasive cardi ologists are acquainting themselves with the procedure in order to be in a position to offer new therapeutic options to their patients. However, the transition from the diagnostic to the therapeutic intervention is not always easily accomplished. Certain prerequisites concerning technique, the physician, technical equipment, and program organization are necessary for safe and effective performance. The consequences of unsuccessful coronary angioplasty range from waste of time and money to severe complications for the patient; the decision to perform PTCA needs to be based on sound indications and techniques according to the best current scientific evidence. Techniques and technology for coronary angioplasty continue to evolve. Scientific evidence of its short-and long-term value continues to accumulate, and applications of the procedure are still being extended. This volume is obviously no substitute for well-guided hands-on experience with the procedure; it is intended rather to present current policies of patient selection and patient management; to describe standard techniques (femoral and brachial approaches) and potential applications; to point out problem areas and limitations of the proce dure; and to provide tips that may be useful even for the more experienced angioplasty operator.

Book Coronary Angioplasty A Controlled Model for Ischemia

Download or read book Coronary Angioplasty A Controlled Model for Ischemia written by P.W. Serruys and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the introduction of coronary angioplasty in 1977, this procedure has gained a steadily increasing position in the treatment of coronary artery obstmction. From the available evidence it can be estimated, that this thera peutic tool will get even more additional momentum of many ten-thousands of patients to be treated in the next few years, due to a growing fraction of patients who are candidates for this intervention. Information about the indications, benefits and risks of coronary angioplasty is accumulating rapidly in addition to publications about refinements of the technique itself. Recently, a number of investigators have realized that coronary angioplasty is not only a therapeutic tool, but can, during the procedure, be used as a source of diagnostic information. When the catheter is placed in a coronary artery obstruction, inflation of the balloon produces transient myocardial ischemia. Before, during, and after this period of severe ischemia, studies of the perfor mance of the myocardium at risk can be carried out. The fact that therapeutic coronary angioplasty is carried out in a cardiac catheterization laboratory which is by definition optimally equipped for the measurement of hemodynamic parameters, has probably also contributed to the effectuation of these investigations. The combination of hemodynamic and biochemical parameters with morphological information from the coronary angiogram can be utilized for the quantification of myocardial involvement and the success of coronary dilatation with angioplasty. Studies of interactions with pharmacological substances are also feasible and informative.

Book Quantitative Coronary Angiography in Clinical Practice

Download or read book Quantitative Coronary Angiography in Clinical Practice written by P.W. Serruys and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative coronary angiography has become an invaluable tool for the interventional cardiologist, providing objective and reproducible measurements of coronary artery dimensions, which can be used to study progression or regression of coronary atherosclerosis, as well as the immediate and long term effects of percutaneous interventions. Until recently, this powerful imaging technology was confined to a small number of so-called high level institutions. Fortunately, with the development of digital cardiac imaging equipment and adaptation of cine-angiographically based computer software for on-line use in the catheterization room, quantitative coronary angiography is now available to all interventionalists. This book is a timely guide for the impending QCA user, providing practical as well as theoretical and scientific information. A comprehensive evaluation of the clinical usefulness of QCA is covered, from the fundamental principles through experimental validation studies, application to clinical trials of a wide range of pharmacological and interventional therapies in the full spectrum of clinical presentation of coronary disease syndromes, evaluation of the therapeutic efficacy of various new devices for coronary intervention, together with extensive presentation of its physiological, functional and anatomical correlations, by comparison with other intracoronary measurement and imaging techniques. In addition, evolving theories and concepts in the ever topical `restenosis phenomenon' after percutaneous intervention, based on serial QCA studies, are presented and discussed and a potentially unifying methodological approach to further study of this ubiquitous problem is offered. This book, thanks to the collaboration of many experts in the field of intracoronary imaging and measurement, provides stimulating, interesting and practical information, both for the academic scientist and practising clinician.

Book Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty and Intracoronary Thrombolysis

Download or read book Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty and Intracoronary Thrombolysis written by M. Kaltenbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Coronary Heart Disease, held in Frankfurt/Federal Republic of Germany. In 1970, when the fIrst symposium was held, the whole range of diagnostic and therapeutic measures was covered, but since then interest in coronary heart disease has increased so considerably that the fourth symposium was restricted to only two therapeutic aspects, angioplasty and intracoronary thrombolysis. It can be noted with pleasure that European cardiologists, namely Andreas Griintzig and Peter Rentrop, have made essential contributions to the applicability of these modes of treatment. When angioplasty was fIrst discussed at the Third International Symposium (Coronary Heart Disease, Stuttgart, 1978) a great deal of astonishment was expressed. Today the procedure has gained an important place in the treatment of angina pecto ris. The proportion of candidates for coronary surgery in whom angioplasty can be attempted instead of operation is around 10%, in certain subgroups even higher. The most remarkable fmding of our 5-year experience with angioplasty are the extre mely good long-term results. Recurrences happen in about 15%-20% of cases within the fIrst 3 months; after this period of time, recurrences are very unusual and mostly due to progression of the disease at other sites. Angioplasty has thus also contributed to our understanding of the dynamics of the atherosclerotic process.

Book Handbook of Angioplasty and Stenting Procedures

Download or read book Handbook of Angioplasty and Stenting Procedures written by Robert A. Morgan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-19 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that Interventional Radiology is steadily moving toward a cli- cal specialty with the need for broad medical training, daily craftsmanship will always remain fundamental to what an interventional radiologist does. Without basic catheter and wire skills IR would not be what it is today. When I watch ex- rienced colleagues work I am always surprised to see that, concerning the technique and the materials, we all make the same choices. There is apparently a common IR skill, which is universal and can be learned with experience. I always see this with new IR fellows, that it takes time to step away from improvising and letting the p- cedure take the lead to logic and standardized control over a procedure. Choosing the right materials for the right job and building a level of con dence with these materials is a very important part of any IR fellowship. Why can a supervisor get a stable catheter position with a new wire in no time, whereas the fellow almost gives up? The difference is knowing your materials for this speci c indication and c- bining routine and standardized operational procedures. Hands-on workshops are always very popular at every IR meeting because one can really learn about basic skills. Lectures with the title “How I do it,” can always count on a full audience.

Book Supported Complex and High Risk Coronary Angioplasty

Download or read book Supported Complex and High Risk Coronary Angioplasty written by Fayez Shawl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interventional cardiology is a creative, innovative, and rapidly advancing frontier of cardiology. There has been mind-boggling proliferation of tech nology in this field, the use of which requires extraordinary skills and know how. In order to keep pace with the innovative genius of interventional cardiologists, it is indeed desirable to have specialty issues updating us on technology-orientated therapeutic procedures. Contemporary interventional cardiology care is a highly specialized art, dependent on critical decision making, selection of the most appropriate inter ventional procedure, and the operator possessing extraordinary skills and compassion. This first volume of the new series, Supported Complex and High Risk Cor onary Angioplasty, attests to the preceding statement. Dr. Fayaz Shawl has mastered the procedure and has been very thoughtful and innovative in the clinical application of the percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass support tech nique. This book provides to an interventionist the basic principles of car diopulmonary bypass, identification of the high risk coronary angioplasty patient, and other alternate support devices for myocardial protection. Dr. Shawl and his team of talented contributors are to be complimented for providing us with this impressive volume on high technology. There will be ongoing specialty issues in this series highlighting the devel opments, complications, and advances in interventional cardiology.
