Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1771, in the midst of a successful tour of Italy, Mozart received a commission to write a dramatic serenata for the marriage of the Archduke Ferdinand. This serenata so overshadowed Hasse's new opera, which was composed for the same occasion, that Hasse is reported to have said the prophetic words: "This boy will cause us all to be forgotten." In the same year Mozart composed his first divertimento (K.113), the first of some twenty-three that he composed during his lifetime. He was not yet 16 years old. The seventeen works in this edition range from K.113 to K.334 and span the years 1771 to 1779. These short, sparkling, brilliant pieces were created for a typical ensemble of 6 to 14 players for strings, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, horns, flute, trumpets, and drums. They have been reproduced from the definitive Breitkopf & Hrtel Complete Works Edition. They include No. 1 in E-flat Major, K.113; No. 2 in D Major, K.131; No. 3 in E-flat Major, K.166; No. 4 in B-flat Major, K.186; No. 5 in C Major, K.187; No. 6 in C Major, K.188; No. 7 in D Major, K.205; No. 8 in F Major, K.213; No. 9 in B-flat Major, K.240; No. 10 in F Major, K.247; No. 11 in D Major, K.251; No. 12 in E-flat Major, K.252; No. 13 in F Major, K.253; No. 14 in B-flat Major, K.270; No. 15 in B-flat Major, K.287; No. 16 in E-flat Major, K.289; and No. 17 in D Major, K.334. Often recorded and performed, the 17 divertimenti are increasingly popular with music lovers and essential for Mozart enthusiasts. All the music has been reproduced in a size large enough to be read easily, with large noteheads, wide margins, and pages that lie flat and will not fall out. This edition is practical for almost any use, whether as a study guide, a reference, or a companion for more knowledgeable and enjoyable listening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A concise guide linking the history of trumpet to performance . . . includes information on band music, bugle calls, orchestral repertoire, and jazz.” —American Reference Books Annual Unlike the violin, which has flourished largely unchanged for close to four centuries, the trumpet has endured numerous changes in design and social status from the battlefield to the bandstand and ultimately to the concert hall. This colorful past is reflected in the arsenal of instruments a classical trumpeter employs during a performance, sometimes using no fewer than five in different keys and configurations to accurately reproduce music from the past. With the rise in historically inspired performances comes the necessity for trumpeters to know more about their instrument’s heritage, its repertoire, and different performance practices for old music on new and period-specific instruments. More than just a history of the trumpet, this essential reference book is a comprehensive guide for musicians who bring that musical history to life. “A compendium of trumpet history with short, fact-filled chapters. It will serve both amateur and professional musicians alike, and few could read this text without learning something. Fanfares and Finesse is a thorough sampling of trumpet topics, including something of interest for every trumpet player, brass enthusiast, or curious reader.” —Pan Pipes “Trumpet players in a wide variety of situations and at many levels will find a great deal of useful information, presented in a clear, engaging, reader-friendly way yet backed by solid research. While some topics are covered in more depth than others, Koehler’s breadth of vision and thoroughness are commendable . . . For all trumpeters and anyone who teaches them.” —Choice

Book Mendelssohn and Victorian England

Download or read book Mendelssohn and Victorian England written by ColinTimothy Eatock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable book considers the reception of the composer, pianist, organist and conductor Felix Mendelssohn in nineteenth-century England, and his influence on English musical culture. Despite the composer's immense popularity in the nation during his lifetime and in the decades following his death, this is the first book to deal exclusively with the subject of Mendelssohn in England. Mendelssohn's highly successful ten trips to Britain, between 1829 and 1847, are documented and discussed in detail, as are his relationships with English musicians and a variety of prominent figures. An introductory chapter describes the musical life of England (especially London) at the time of Mendelssohn's arrival and the last two chapters deal with the composer's posthumous reception, to the end of the Victorian era. Eatock reveals Mendelssohn as a catalyst for the expansion of English musical culture in the nineteenth century. In taking this position, the author challenges much of the extant literature on the subject and provides an engaging story that brings Mendelssohn and his English experiences to life.

Book The Clarinet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Hoeprich
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2008-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300102826
  • Pages : 426 pages

Download or read book The Clarinet written by Eric Hoeprich and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clarinet has a long and rich history as a solo, orchestral, and chamber musical instrument. In this broad-ranging account Eric Hoeprich, a performer, teacher, and expert on historical clarinets, explores its development, repertoire, and performance history. Looking at the antecedents of the clarinet, as well as such related instruments as the chalumeau, basset horn, alto clarinet, and bass clarinet, Hoeprich explains the use and development of the instrument in the Baroque age. The period from the late 1700s to Beethoven's early years is shown to have fostered ever wider distribution and use of the instrument, and a repertoire of increasing richness. The first half of the nineteenth century, a golden age for the clarinet, brought innovation in construction and great virtuosity in performance, while the following century and a half produced a surge in new works from many composers. The author also devotes a chapter to the role of the clarinet in bands, folk music, and jazz.
