Book Values Education and Quality Teaching

Download or read book Values Education and Quality Teaching written by Terence Lovat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-07 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some revision of public schooling history is necessary to challenge the dominant mythology that public schools were established on the grounds of values-neutrality. In fact, those responsible for the foundations of public education in Australia were sufficiently pragmatic to know that its success relied on its charter being in accord with public sentiment. Part of the pragmatism was in convincing those whose main experience of education had been through some form of church-based education that state-based education was capable of meeting the same ends. Hence, the documents of the 1870s and 1880s that contained the charters of the various state and territory systems witness to a breadth of vision about the scope of education. Beyond the standard goals of literacy and numeracy, education was said to be capable of assuring personal morality for each individual and a suitable citizenry for the soon-to-be new nation. As an instance, the NSW Public Instr- tion Act of 1880 (cf. NSW, 1912), under the rubric of “religious teaching”, stressed the need for students to be inculcated into the values of their society, including understanding the role that religious values had played in forming that society’s legal codes and social ethics. The notion, therefore, that public education is part of a deep and ancient heritage around values neutrality is mistaken and in need of se- ous revision. The evidence suggests that public education’s initial conception was of being the complete educator, not only of young people’s minds but of their inner character as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This slender volume explains the merits of getting an old-fashioned liberal arts education." -The American Spectator College students today have tremendous freedom to choose the courses they will take. With such freedom, however, students face a pressing dilemma: How can they choose well? Which courses convey the core of an authentic liberal arts education, transmitting our civilizational inheritance, and which courses are merely passing fads? A Student's Guide to the Core Curriculum helps students achieve a coherent understanding of their world and their place in history. This penetrating volume explains the value of a traditional core of studies in Western civilization and then surveys eight courses available in most American universities that may be taken to acquire such an education. This guide puts "the best which has been taught and said" within reach of every student.

Book The Sustainable World

Download or read book The Sustainable World written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of papers presented at a series of meetings organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT) dealing with sustainability, the environment and ecological issues. The complexity of the modern world presents new challenges to scientists and engineers that requires finding interdisciplinary solutions. Any problem solving carried out in the isolation of a particular field of expertise may give rise to a series of damaging effects which can create new and unintentional environmental and ecological problems. Specialisation, while required in our culture, needs to be kept under control by the understanding of the whole, which leads to the need of relying on interdisciplinary teams. Nowadays this can be easily achieved thanks to the massive advances in information technology which ensure continuous and immediate contact between all partners. This collaboration needs to be effective and to produce results that will lead to a better world. For this to happen, it is necessary that different groups of scientists and engineers acquire the necessary skills to be able to talk to each other. Furthermore, they need to understand the social and economic aspects of a given problem, in addition to the scientific and engineering issues involved. The Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT) has a long and very successful record in organising interdisciplinary conferences. The papers in this book are a reflection of the proceedings of some of those meetings.

Book Educating for Values Driven Leadership

Download or read book Educating for Values Driven Leadership written by Mary C. Gentile and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite four decades of good faith effort to teach ethics in business schools, you’ll still find today headlines about egregious excess and scandal. It becomes reasonable to ask why these efforts have not been working. Business faculty in ethics courses spend a lot of time teaching theories of ethical reasoning and analyzing those big, thorny dilemmas—triggering what one professor called “ethics fatigue.” But what if faculty stopped focusing on ethical analysis and focused on a new curriculum—one that builds a conversation across the core curriculum (not only in ethics courses) and also provides the teaching aids for a new way of thinking about ethics education? This is where Giving Voice to Values (GVV) comes in—the GVV curriculum asks the question: “What if I were going to act on my values? What would I say and do? How could I be most effective?” This book will help faculty across the business curriculum with examples, strategies, and assistance in applying the GVV approach. In addition to an introductory chapter, which explains the rationale and strategy behind GVV, there are twelve individual chapters by faculty from the major business functional areas and from faculty representing different geographic regions. The book is a useful guide for faculty from any business discipline on HOW to use the GVV approach in his or her teaching.

Book Stop Leading Start Building

Download or read book Stop Leading Start Building written by Robyn R. Jackson and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are a school administrator—a principal or maybe a district leader. You're doing everything "right"—poring over data, trying new strategies, launching annual initiatives, bringing in outside trainers. So why do the outcomes you seek still seem so far away? The problem isn't you; it's that you were trained in school leadership, and school leadership just isn’t up to the challenge. Each year, Robyn R. Jackson helps thousands of administrators stop wasting time and energy on flawed leadership approaches that succeed only with the right staff, students, parents, budget, and boss. As they have discovered, it's possible to transform your school with the people and resources you already have. The secret? Stop leading and start building! In this book, you'll learn to use Jackson's breakthrough Buildership Model™ to escape the "school improvement hamster wheel" and finally create the school your students and teachers deserve. The work involves a handful of simple shifts in how you approach . . . • Purpose: Instead of chasing tiny gains or the "next new thing" every year, you'll establish and use an ambitious vision, mission, and set of core values to galvanize your staff, keep everyone focused, and create true accountability for achieving your goals. • People: You’ll discover new ways to help every teacher grow one level in one domain in one year or less and, ultimately, develop high levels of both will and skill. • Pathway: Instead of trying to tackle every problem at once, you'll identify the biggest obstacle standing in your way right now and figure out exactly how to remove it once and for all. • Plan: You'll learn a new process for solution implementation that is iterative, cyclical, and capable of powering both short-term wins and ongoing transformation, year over year. When you stop leading and start building, you let go of the idea that you need to work harder to make your school "work better." You no longer settle for incremental improvement when what you really want is dramatic change and better learning outcomes for all. It's time to make the shift from leadership to buildership. Get ready to turn your school into a success story.

Book A Curriculum of Unquestionable Value and Lasting Relevance

Download or read book A Curriculum of Unquestionable Value and Lasting Relevance written by Lee Smith and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the people who are saying the schools are not providing students with the knowledge and skill levels needed for today’s or tomorrow’s workforce when they were in school were high achievers. Many were the best and brightest their schools had to offer. They also received their education during an era criticized as having not provided them with the knowledge and skills levels adequate for then or today’s needs. As defective products of the problem, they are not capable of meeting the challenge of effecting meaningful and lasting educational curriculum change. This brings up the question of what qualifies this author then to speak with authority on how to affect meaningful and lasting educational reform. The answer is that he is not part of all this. Many of the reformers recognize him as the guy who would punch them in the arm and take their lunch money. The author was also the class clown. His teachers said he was failing because he daydreamed in class. They said he was failing because he did not turn in his homework. They said that, while he had learned to walk and talk on his own without any help from them, that he had some organic problem keeping him from learning. What all these teachers and counselors and evaluators and probation officers and school board members and parents and foster parents and everyone else never, ever said is that he was struggling with division because he had not mastered the times tables. They just did not know, perhaps really did not care. He knew this, and in the early part of the fifth grade, he decided his life would be better and easier if he submitted to learning the multiplication tables. For this reason, he is essentially self-educated and so has a particularly different point of view from these other self-described, poorly prepared products of the education system. In addition to being outside the public education system, another factor in his qualifications to evaluate the nation’s educational efforts is his shoes; they are steel-toed.

Written by a teacher for teachers, Teach Meaningful includes: ● stories of failures and successes in designing curriculum from across subjects and grade levels ● metaphors from everyday life to help teachers understand curriculum design as a process rooted in values and culminating in meaningful learning ● examples of essential questions, assessment guidelines, lesson calendars, unit plans, and curriculum maps ● exercises and templates teachers can use to create and assess curriculum ● protocols designed to encourage inclusive participation and critical reflection when colleagues look at curriculum together
