Book Corazon Contento

Download or read book Corazon Contento written by Madeline Gallego Thorpe and published by Texas Tech University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This delightful book is filled with the distinctive regional recipes, family stories and dichos (sayings) that Callego Thorpe grew up with. It contains recipes for the herbal remedios her grandmother used for healing, as well as more widely known foods such as tamales, enchiladas, and posole. It is a fascinating record of a way of life and a way of cooking that can enrich the historical and cultural awareness of all Americans.Sopa de ViejoOld Man's Soup6 flour tortillas, cut into 1 inch pieces1 large onion, diced2 cloves garlic, minced1/2 cup fresh roasted green chiles, cut into strips1 cup Monterrey Jack cheese1/2 qt. chicken broth1/2 qt. milk1 Tbsp. oilsalt to tasteHeat oil in a 2-quart pan. Add tortilla pieces and brown lightly, about 4 minutes. Add onion and garlic; cook 3 more minutes. Then add the chicken broth and milk, and cook over medium heat for 30 minutes. Add green chiles and cheese. Cook 3 more minutes. Serves 4 to 6. This was one of Abuelito's favorite soups.Abuelito was a great storyteller, and he especially loved keeping us up with ghost stories on hot summer nights, when we kids were sleeping outside on cots. He told us about La Llorona (The Crying One), a woman whose children died in a fire when she left them alone to go to a party, and the story called "Dancing with the Devil at Elysean Groves," about a girl who disobeyed her parents and went dancing, only to discover that her partner was the devil. There are a variety of versions of these stories. Abuelito kept us in anticipation for days, as he told little bits of Aladino y la Lamparita Maravillosa (Aladdin and the Magic Lamp) each night until it was finished. After I graduated from high school, my cousin Elaine, a friend, and I went to California to make our fortunes. We returned home after three months, flat broke, and willing to seek our fortunes in Tucson, instead. On the night of our return, Elaine and I decided to go to a local dance to catch up on everything we'd missed that summer. When we got home that night, Abuelito unlocked the door for us, and then hid around the corner with a sheet over his head to scare us, like he had done when we were kids. Later that night, he passed away, leaving us with sweet memories of the loving, tender man that he was.ReviewBOOKLIST, JULY 1999Other authors have documented the foods of America's Southwest, but none have so lovingly drawn the intimate connections between this kind of cooking and the society from which it springs. Thorpe and Engels have organized their recipes by seasons to show how the people, the land, and the food come together to bring life to the area's inhabitants. Their cuisine is a simple one, lacking the sophistication of cooking south of the border. For example, their mole sauce for chicken calls for just peanuts and chili powder instead of the long inventory of nuts, seeds, and chiles required in Oaxaca. Many of the recipes include a note on herbal medicine; others have short reflections on the recipe's significance in the family; still others conclude with an apothegm of local folk wisdom.--Mark Knoblauch

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cover of this book was designed by a grandson of the subject of this book. The broken heart signifies the pain and sadness of all three characters, the subject, the author, and artist. When Erma was twenty-nine years old, her mother told her that she had a big heart with two wings. One wing was strength, and the other was sadness. Mother told Erma she needed Christ in her life to balance that big heart. Two years ago, Erma received a gift at Christmas from her oldest daughter. When she opened the present, it was a ceramic heart with two wings. At the first sight of the gift, Erma burst out crying with memories from a saying from her mother. Her two other siblings who were there were stunned and didn't know what was going on. Imagine thirty years later how something from your past can come greet you.

Book My Mother s Footsteps

Book excerpt: At the young age of seventeen, the popular Hanne Liese Grischmann is forced to wear a Star of David in her school classes and soon is not allowed to attend school at all. Understanding that Germany is no longer safe for Jews, the young woman travels to Nazi headquarters a number of times to obtain an exit visa when exit visas were impossible to procure. But, in spite of the obstacles, on April 20, 1940, Hanne and her mother leave Germany en route to Bolivia with the unobtainable papers in hand. Thus, an extraordinary tale of determination and adventure unfolds. In My Mother’s Footsteps sketches the life that Hanne found in Bolivia, traces her family’s further immigration to Canada, telling her story as a young widow in Montreal. Filled with stories about family and friends, triumph and tragedy, In My Mother’s Footsteps spans four generations of the Nador family story. Liberally illustrated with photographs, this memoir bears evidence of the many stages of this family’s journey and brings it to life. Rooted in the harsh realities of the Holocaust, this memoir remembers the spirit and determination of one woman and pays tribute to her life. It acknowledges her spirit and the love she inspired within those who knew her. Perhaps, greatest of all, it treasures family and acknowledges the gifts and sacrifices of previous generations.

Book excerpt: A soldier at the age of eleven; an honorably discharged veteran at age of thirteen; a miner, a cotton-picker, a shepherd, and a graduate of Hollywood High, Luis Perez lived an incredible life, which has shaped his story into a vividly-realized autobiographical account. Originally published in 1947, El Coyote , the Rebel tells how the toddler Luis, son of an Aztec mother and a French diplomat father, ended up in the care of an uncle, who soon drank away most of the boys inheritance. Having run away from cruel treatment, Luis by chance came to fight with the rebel armies in the 1910 Mexican Revolution, received the nickname of "El Coyote" for his cunning, and was wounded in combat. Upon being given a discharge and a twenty-dollar bill, he walked across the border to become an American. His story concludes, after an episode of amorous misadventures in a missionary school, with the young hero preparing to marry his true love and solemnly taking the oath of U.S. citizenship, at "the beginning of a new tomorrow."

Book Mexican American Cuisine

Download or read book Mexican American Cuisine written by Ilan Stavans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing food for the brain as well as the body, this wonderful collection of essays explores the boundaries between Mexican and Mexican-American foods, promotes philosophical understandings of Mexican-American cuisine, and shares recipes from both past and present. Defining Mexican-American food is difficult due to its incredibly diverse roots and traditions. This unique style of cuisine varies significantly from Mexican and Latin American cuisines, fusing Native American and Hispanic influences stemming from three centuries of first Spanish and later Mexican rule. In Mexican-American Cuisine, renowned authority in Latino culture Ilan Stavans and 10 other experts in southwestern cuisine explore the food itself and associated traditions. The book presents nine scholarly essays that examine philosophical understandings of Mexican-American cuisine. Covering both platillos principales (main dishes) and postres (desserts), the authors serve up a sideboard of anthropological, ethnographic, sociological, and culinary observations. Essay topics include the boundaries between Mexican and Mexican-American food, the history and uses of the chile, and the derivations of Mexican cuisine. Readers are also treated to recipes and recommendations by 19th-century California chef Encarnación Pinedo who explores "The Art of Cooking."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes in an entertaining way the life of the author from his childhood, with the antics of his age; his connection and stay in the Chilean Navy, the adventures he lived as a sailor on the Quiriquina Island, the naval base of Punta Arenas, and Valparaiso; his detention in the Quinta normal Santiago de Chile, in the jails and concentration camps, the torments he had to endure and the several times he was one step away from death, accused unjustly of sedition and mutiny in the trial of sailors constitutionalists, who opposed the military coup of September 11, 1973, although he rejected the seditious plans of the Navy officially, was not part of the group and his opposition was purely personal. It is human work that shows openly the horrors committed by some military regime that lived in Chile for 1973 – 1990. To write this book, the author traveled back to the past in the time he lived what happened; is written using the same language without sparing the original vocabulary of the youth of those years, remembering the moment, without thinking about grammar, presenting the reader the opportunity to live and feel the drama of the situation. The action, the adventure, and the drama are narrated with feeling, laughter, and tears of a human being.
