Download or read book The EU Mexico Free Trade Agreement written by James R. Holbein and published by Ardsley, N.Y. : Transnational Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EU-Mexico Free Trade Agreement is the first volume in a series of monographs encompassing text and analysis of all multilateral and bilateral free trade agreements. All this adds up to the kind of information business and economic analysts need in order to make sound decisions both in the long and short terms. For example, The EU-Mexico Free Trade Agreement, containing the most detailed and practical comparison of NAFTA and the EU-Mexico Agreement available anywhere, offers a wealth of material and insight with which to build realistic answers to such critical questions as: -How is Mexico's preferential access to the EU markets for agricultural exports affected by US trade in produce, livestock and meat? - Has the EU-Mexico Agreement hurt the "big three" US auto manufacturers? - Has the mandated cooperation between Mexican and European standards-related agencies given rise to standards that conflict with NAFTA? Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.

Book excerpt: This book represents a comprehensive coverage of the current state of knowledge of Volcán de Colima: its history, its eruptive mechanism, the generation and interpretation of monitoring data, and the risk presented to the local population. The volume pulls together the results of the most important studies of recent years from many areas of volcanology: the geology of its eruptive products; geophysical and geochemical studies of the signals measured that relate to the generation and movement of magma; experimental analysis of its internal processes and the social complexities relating to the risk imposed by future eruptions. Volcán de Colima is an important volcano: it has frequent large Plinian or sub-Plinian eruptions; its activity frequently switches between various regimes, which provides the opportunity to study these transitions from their cause to their impact; and it is a volcano which poses a significant threat to a large population.

Book North American Regional Security

Download or read book North American Regional Security written by Richard J. Kilroy (Jr.) and published by Lynne Rienner Pub. This book was released on 2013 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Has the emergence of new transnational threats - terrorism, drug cartels, natural disasters - affected the dynamics of security relations among Canada, Mexico, and the United States? What is the likely future of these relations in a highly securitized world? Richard Kilroy, Abelardo Rodríguez Sumano, and Todd Hataley trace the evolution of security relations in North America from the bilateral approach that existed prior to the events of September 11, to the unilateral US approach of perimeter defense after September 11, to the creation of a trilateral regional security framework. Their analysis highlights both the move toward cooperation and the significant obstacles that limit the potential for an effective regional security complex." -- Publisher's description.

Download or read book The Lean Lands written by Agustín Yáñez and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1968-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was it that flew over with such a terrifying roar? Was it, as many said, the devil, or was it that thing a few had heard of, a flying machine? And those electric lights at Jacob Gallo’s farm, were they witchcraft or were they science? The theme of this harshly powerful novel is the impact of modern technology and ideas on a few isolated, tradition-bound hamlets in the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. The old ways are represented by Epifanio Trujillo, the cacique of the region, now ailing and losing his grip on things; by ancient Madre Matiana, the region’s midwife, healer, counselor, and oracle; by penniless Rómulo and his wife Merced. “Progress” is represented by Don Epifanio’s bastard son Jacob, who acquired money and influence elsewhere during the Revolution and who now, against his father’s will, brings electricity, irrigation, fertilizers, and other modernities to the lean lands—together with armed henchmen. The conflict between the old and the new builds slowly and inexorably to a violent climax that will long remain in the reader’s memory. The author has given psychological and historical depth to his story by alternating the passages of narrative and dialogue with others in which several of the major characters brood on the past, the present, and the future. For instance, Matiana, now in her eighties, touchingly remembers how she was married and widowed before she had reached her seventeenth birthday. This dual technique is superbly handled, so that people and events have both a vivid actuality and an inner richness of meaning. The impact of the narrative is intensified by the twenty-one striking illustrations by Alberto Beltrán.

  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 450 pages

Download or read book Casi Nada written by John Gledhill and published by Institute for Mesoamerican Studies. This book was released on 1991 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "CASI NADA is the result of many months that the author shared the lives of the ejidatarios of Guaracha, Michoacan and of his patient reconstruction of the collective memory concerning a half centry of violence and hope. Without a doubt, it will become obligatory reading for those interested in the themes of agrarian reform, peasant reproduction and political control at the local level. The book will also serve to remind us that, if it is true that Mexican peasants never have supported populist inefficiencies, neither will they become enthusiastic supporters of a neoliberal agenda which condemns them to disappear."- Guillermo de la Peña; Director, CIESAS-Occidente; Guadalajara, Mexico

Book Mexico in the 1940s

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen R. Niblo
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780842027953
  • Pages : 440 pages

Download or read book Mexico in the 1940s written by Stephen R. Niblo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1999 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title examines Mexican politics in the wake of Cardenismo, and the dawn of Miguel Aleman's presidency. This new book focuses on the decade of the 1940s, and analyzes Alcmanismo into the early years of the 1950s. Based upon a decade of intensive investigation, it is the first broad and substantial study of the political life of the Mexican nation during this period, thus opening a new era to historical investigation. Analytical yet lively, mixing political and cultural history, Mexico in the 1940s captures the humor, passion, and significance of Mexico during the World War II and post-war years when Mexicans entered the era called "the miracle" because of the nation's economic growth and political stability. Niblo develops the case that the Mexico of today -- politically and executively centralized, stressing business and industry, corrupt, ignoring the needs of the majority of the population -- has its roots in the decade and a half after 1940. Finally, Mexico in the 1940s offers a unique interpretation of Mexican domestic politics in this period, including an explanation of how political leaders were able to reverse the course of the Mexican Revolution in the 1940s; an original interpretation of corruption in Mexican political life, a phenomenon that did not end in the 1940s; and an analysis of the relationship between the U.S. media interests, the Mexican state and the Mexican media companies that still dominate mass communication today.
