Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American males face daunting obstacles as they pursue higher education as research has shown. This study sought to better understand the impact of specific factors--social support, racial identity, perceived racial discrimination, coping, and religious coping--on the academic achievement of African American male college student achievement. Using secondary data and a Multiple Linear Regression analyses, the project investigated relationships among these influences as a way of uncovering strategies used to mitigate obstacles faced by African American males attending Predominantly White Institutions. The study used an anti-deficit achievement approach to examine how African American male college students at two PWIs negotiate experiences and the use of coping mechanisms that may positively affect academic achievement for this subgroup of students. Results of the study indicate that the college experiences and coping mechanisms examined have a limited impact on GPA for African American male students. The results indicate that higher education professionals should focus attention on providing avenues for African American male students to express religious and other coping techniques to assist in achievement and to better manage the effects of discrimination and isolation that are part of their transition to PWIs. Future research on African American male college student achievement should include a broader sample group from various campus types to increase the generalizability of the findings.

Book The Successful Transition of Black Men at Historically White Universities

Download or read book The Successful Transition of Black Men at Historically White Universities written by Regina M. George and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is something going on with Black men in America who go to college. As university enrollment has become more diverse with all ethnic and economic groups attending in greater numbers, as Black women are graduating at unprecedented rates, as postsecondary education becomes an increasingly significant employment requirement, the persistence to graduation rate of Black men as a group is among the lowest. Historically White institutions of higher education seek to ensure academic success and increase 4-6 year graduation rates for all students. Perhaps Black men can inform the process and lift everyone with their knowledge. This is a qualitative inquiry with 21 Black men between the ages of 18 and 25 years, most of them from the city of Detroit, who have successfully completed at least a year of college at one of three historically White universities. Although all three selected schools are located in Southeastern Michigan, they are of markedly different size and situation. The research framework is strength based, an approach acknowledged as positive and pointed. The conceptual underpinnings for analysis include liminality, critical race theory, and identity development. Everyone crosses multiple thresholds throughout life in changing role or residence, age or stage, belief or bias. The time between high school completion and successful college performance is one of these transitional and transformative periods that requires the acquisition or enhancement of associated skills. The co-researchers shared what was relevant to their decision to attend college and how they selected where to go, their academic performance and achievement, their personal and social adjustments, and how they endure and persist towards the goal of graduation. Their reflections reveal the relevance of K12 focus on and preparation for postsecondary education, the significance of institutional support in college, and the importance of caring and community at all levels.

Book Coping Strategies for Students of Color in a Predominantly White College

Download or read book Coping Strategies for Students of Color in a Predominantly White College written by Faith Maina and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University students in general experience stressful situations once they leave home and begin to adjust to the new life on a college campus with its related academic and social demands. However, students of color often have the additional burden of coping with race-related stress. Data from a focus group interview with 18 alumni of color, found students being stereotyped, feeling overwhelmingly invisible, being singled out in the classroom and often witnessing racism and racially related incidents. This paper describes the coping strategies they employed and which helped them complete their program successfully. They reported using a strong net work of social support, became resilient and self-sufficient, and sometimes used detachment and self-selected isolation. While this study is limited to self-report it nevertheless provides significant information to the institution as it attempts to address race-related tension and conflict.

Book Lean on Me

Book excerpt: The disparity between the academic success of Black males and their White peers in the United States is robust. Research supports the disparity is not only the result of low financial status but also racial and gender barriers that affect how Black males navigate academic environments.Intervention programs to improve Black males' quality of life through mentorship and motivationenhancement have impacted the academic success of Black males greater than those that provide financial resources. Yet, these interventions do not target Black males in primarily white education settings where academic stressors are greater, racial and gender barriers more commonplace and ability to successfully cope with stress is crucial to academic success. Although research supports that the use of maladaptive coping strategies by Black males negatively impacts academic success, few intervention programs have focused on improving college stressor coping strategies. Thus, the proposed intervention utilizes the concept of metacognitive feedback, or the process of "thinking about how one thinks", to instruct black men on how to use help-seeking as an adaptive and problem focused coping strategy. The intervention supports cognitive and behavioral change by instructing black men to consider how negative attitudes, discouraging subjective norms and low perceptions of control affect coping strategy. After the semester-long course students in the intervention should report higher intentions to seek out professional counseling services. Significant results for this proposal could potentially increase Black males use of available college help services, enhance this populations overall well-being and be a primary factor contributing to greater academic success.

Book excerpt: This study is a critical ethnography that examines the relationship between the racial-identity, coping strategies and educational aspirations of two African American males who live (and attend school) in a predominantly White community. The participants reside in a Northeastern state where the African-American population is below 3%. Although they live in different parts of the state, symbols like the Confederate flag were regularly seen inside and outside of both high schools. Critical Race Theory (CRT) is the primary interpretive framework used in this study. However, theory from educational psychology and sociology were also included. Through semi-structured interviews, on-site observations, and artifact analysis (e.g. high school transcripts, SAT scores, and samples of creative writing), this research advances the understanding of how being Black in a predominantly White community affected the participants’ identity, coping strategies and educational experiences. Similar to how any system functions, the participants’ identity, coping strategies and educational aspirations were nested and dependent upon each other. This included a number of balancing and re-enforcing feedback loops. Although this study is qualitative and cannot be generalized, the experiences of the participants were similar. The difference was in their coping strategies. The predominant culture that currently exists in most communities and educational institutions is deeply embedded in racism. This is systemic. It is time all institutions move forward and embrace diversity. Similar to the earth’s resources, race relations must be sustained if we are to create a prosperous world for future generations. Key Words: achievement, acting-White, agency, aspirations, identity, racism, resilience, stereotyping and self-efficacy.

Book Living at the Intersections

Download or read book Living at the Intersections written by Terrell Strayhorn and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living at the Intersections: Social Identities and Black Collegians brings together 21 diverse authors from 14 different institutions, including our nation’s most prestigious public and private universities, to advance the use of intersectionality and intersectional approaches in studying Black students in higher education. Chapters cover a diversity of topics, ranging from spirituality to sexuality and masculinity, from Black students at HBCUs to those in STEM majors, and a host of issues related to race, class, gender, and other identities. Authors draw upon a wealth of data including national surveys, interviews, focus groups, narratives, and even historical research. A smooth blend of anthropology, historiography, psychology, sociology, and intersectional approaches from multiple disciplines, this book breaks new ground on the “who, what, when, where, and how” of intersectionality applied to social problems affecting Black collegians. The authors go beyond merely stating the importance of intersectionality in research, but they also provide countless examples, recommended strategies, and tools for doing so. This book is an important resource for higher education and student affairs professionals, scholars, and graduate students interested in intersectionality and Black collegians.
