Book Cooperative Power Sharing Control in Multi terminal Voltage Source Converter high Voltage Direct Current

Download or read book Cooperative Power Sharing Control in Multi terminal Voltage Source Converter high Voltage Direct Current written by Hasan Alrajhi Alsiraji and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Multi-terminal high voltage DC (MTDC) system is a viable solution for increasing an electrical power generation to interconnect renewable resources into an AC grid. Using a voltage source converter (VSC) allows independent control of a reactive and an active power flow. Based on the literature, there is a trend to implement MTDC into a distribution grid system in the future. Power sharing control among MTDCs is an important and critical consideration from the point of view of stability and operation. MTDC systems consist of multi-input converters (rectifiers) and single or multi-output converters (inverters), thus controlling and operating MTDC systems pose many challenges due to their complexity. Since the DC link in MTDC systems might have several connection nodes all having a common DC voltage value, using the DC voltage value as a common reference for all terminal control loops makes it possible to get a cooperative control performance. An economical autonomous control to share active power among MTDC systems based on the availability of active power or power management policy is proposed in this thesis. Power sharing among MTDC systems has a priority or sequential procedural problem because of the use of the conventional droop strategy. On the other hand, using predefined or constant power sharing does not provide the available power that can be shared when it is not being consumed by another inverter. The proposed strategy solves these issues using different options. In this thesis, the test system consists of four simulated VSC terminals based on a detailed switching VSC model with two AC voltage levels. The MTDC system is simulated in a PSCAD/EMTDC environment. The simulation results show a significant decrease in operational costs and protection from overloading which had been an issue.

Book Self Commutating Converters for High Power Applications

Download or read book Self Commutating Converters for High Power Applications written by Jos Arrillaga and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-01-12 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For very high voltage or very high current applications, the power industry still relies on thyristor-based Line Commutated Conversion (LCC), which limits the power controllability to two quadrant operation. However, the ratings of self-commutating switches such as the Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) and Integrated Gate-Commutated Thyristor (IGCT), are reaching levels that make the technology possible for very high power applications. This unique book reviews the present state and future prospects of self-commutating static power converters for applications requiring either ultra high voltages (over 600 kV) or ultra high currents (in hundreds of kA). It is an important reference for electrical engineers working in the areas of power generation, transmission and distribution, utilities, manufacturing and consulting organizations. All topics in this area are held in this one complete volume. Within these pages, expect to find thorough coverage on: modelling and control of converter dynamics; multi-level Voltage Source Conversion (VSC) and Current Source Conversion (CSC); ultra high-voltage VSC and CSC DC transmission; low voltage high DC current AC-DC conversion; industrial high current applications; power conversion for high energy storage. This text has a host of helpful material that also makes it a useful source of knowledge for final year engineering students specializing in power engineering, and those involved in postgraduate research.

Book Multilevel Voltage Source Converters in High Voltage Direct Current Transmission Systems

Download or read book Multilevel Voltage Source Converters in High Voltage Direct Current Transmission Systems written by Yushu Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focuses on voltage source multilevel converters in high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. The first Voltage Source Converter based HVDC (VSC-HVDC) systems with series connected IGBTs in a two-level converter represented a solution to meet industrial and economical requirements but is associated with significant drawbacks such as high dv/dt and di/dt, high switching loss, and poor output voltage and current quality. To overcome these issues, the multilevel converter was proposed for HVDC application. The Modular Multilevel Converter (M2C) was the first multilevel converter to be commercially used in the power industry. In this thesis, the M2C is investigated mainly in terms of operating principle, capacitor size and capacitor voltage ripple, capacitor voltage balancing technique and modulation scheme. The results of this investigation show that the M2C offers the following features: improved efficiency, lower supporting voltage and current in the switching devices and low dv/dt. These features make the M2C suitable for HVDC systems. Two new operational principles and modulation strategies for a Hybrid Cascaded Multilevel Converter (HCMC) are proposed in this thesis. Both modulation schemes extend the modulation index linear range and improve the output waveform quality. This gives the HCMC a higher power density than any known multilevel converter topology for the same dc link voltage and switching device rating. Simulations for both types of multilevel converter (M2C and HCMC) are supported by practical results from scaled hardware laboratory converters. Mathematical analysis and calculation of conversion loss for both types of multilevel converter and for the conventional two-level converter are performed. It is shown that both M2C and HCMC provide lower conversion loss compare to the conventional two-level converter. A control strategy for these two multilevel converters in point-to-point and multi-terminal HVDC systems is also studied. Simulation results show that these two converters are able to operate over the entire specified P-Q capability curve and are capable of riding through ac faults without imposing any over-voltage or over-current on the converter switches.

Book Advanced Control and Synchronization Approaches of Voltage Source Converters for Integration of Distributed Energy Resources

Download or read book Advanced Control and Synchronization Approaches of Voltage Source Converters for Integration of Distributed Energy Resources written by Malek Ramezani and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voltage source converter (VSC) is an inseparable interfacing fixture for utilizing distributed energy resource (DER) as an AC power supply. This dissertation investigates different control and synchronization techniques for stand-alone and grid-connected DC-AC VSCs. The most common control reference frame for VSCs is the dq reference frame (dq-RF), also known as the synchronous reference frame. The main challenge associated with the VSC control in this reference frame is the strong coupling between d and q axes. In this dissertation, a multi-loop dq-RF control system with a coupling compensation scheme is presented. Then, the droop-based power control technique, which eliminates the need for communication between parallel-connected VSCs and consequently offers a higher reliability, is investigated. A dq-RF-based approach of impedance design, for compensating the inequality of parallel VSCs connecting lines, along with the dq-RF droop control are also proposed. This approach results in an accurate power-sharing among parallel VSCs. The major challenges related to the synchronization unit of a grid-connected VSC control system in the presence of a distorted AC voltage are also briefly investigated in this dissertation. To deal with these challenges, an enhanced complex coefficient filter based PLL is designed and presented. This PLL completely removes the grid voltage imbalance and considerably attenuates the grid voltage dc offset and harmonics while maintaining a fast dynamic response and a simple structure. The VSC-interfaced DER is often required to switch between the islanded and grid-connected operation modes. The VSC integrated into the grid is current-controlled, while in the islanded operation mode is controlled as a voltage source. In the transition between these two modes, first the intended VSC operation mode should be detected, then its control system is reconfigured. To avoid the complexity of the control system and alleviate the drawbacks associated with the control mode transition, a VSC control approach, which mimics the traditional synchronous generator's universal mode of operation, is studied. A method of power-based active synchronization of the VSC-interfaced DER, with the ability of seamless transition between the islanded mode and connected to the grid, is proposed and integrated with this technique of the VSC control.

Book Voltage Source Converter

Book excerpt: In the last two decades, the uses of voltage source converter in power systems have increased significantly in electricity generation, transmission and distribution systems. These increases are expected to continue with the current trend toward decentralized power systems, increased penetration of renewable power into ac grids, smart grids and dc grids. Such increases in the uses of the power electronic devices and systems in today and future power systems are expected to alter ac grids characteristics and responses to major disturbances. Understanding behaviour of ac grids with such increased complexity requires new generations of power systems and power electronics engineers, with greater knowledge of both power electronics and power systems. This book is written with the primary objective of describing the aspects of the traditional and emerging voltage source converters, which are relevant to system focus readers, without ignoring some of the important device aspects from the converter modelling and system prospective. In addition, this book covered most of the recent developments in the voltage source converters and high-voltage dc transmission systems, with the intention of shortening the learning curve for many readers. The first chapters of this book are devoted to key device aspects such as operating principles and modulation strategies, modelling approaches that are applicable to different voltage source converters and their attributes and limitations, and control strategies. The later chapters focus in applications of these converters in power systems. The expected beneficiaries from the materials presented in this book are final years electrical and electronic engineering students, post-graduate masters and research students, power electronic systems and power systems engineers, research and development engineers, and professional and practitioners working within consultancies.

Book Consensus and Synchronization in Complex Networks

Download or read book Consensus and Synchronization in Complex Networks written by Ljupco Kocarev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book for the first time two scientific fields - consensus formation and synchronization of communications - are presented together and examined through their interrelational aspects, of rapidly growing importance. Both fields have indeed attracted enormous research interest especially in relation to complex networks. In networks of dynamic systems (or agents), consensus means to reach an agreement regarding a certain quantity of interest that depends on the state of all dynamical systems (agents). Consensus problems have a long history in control theory and computer sciences, and form the foundation of the field of distributed computing. Synchronization, which defines correlated-in-time behavior between different processes and roots going back to Huygens to the least, is now a highly popular, exciting and rapidly developing topic, with applications ranging from biological networks to mathematical epidemiology, and from processing information in the brain to engineering of communications devices. The book reviews recent finding in both fields and describes novel approaches to consensus formation, where consensus is realized as an instance of the nonlinear dynamics paradigm of chaos synchronization. The chapters are written by world-known experts in both fields and cover topics ranging from fundaments to various applications of consensus and synchronization.

Book Reduced order Modeling of the Parallel Hybrid Modular Multilevel Converter

Download or read book Reduced order Modeling of the Parallel Hybrid Modular Multilevel Converter written by Curtis Shumski and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the demand for electrical power continues to increase, so does the attractiveness of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission networks to transfer power from generating stations to load centers. Located at either end of the HVDC transmission network are converter stations that convert the AC power into DC power, and vice versa. A voltage source converter (VSC) commonly used in practice is the modular multilevel converter (MMC); however, these converters require many power electronic switches that will significantly increase the cost of such HVDC networks. A cost-effective alternative to these converters is the parallel hybrid MMC (PH-MMC), which is the focus of this thesis. Modeling VSCs in large electrical networks can be a computational burden as a small time step is required to capture all of the switching transients of the VSC. In some situations, it may not be necessary to simulate every switching instant, and instead a reduced-order model can be utilized. The reduced order model of VSCs retain the behavior of the converters, while being able to run at a larger time step and at a much faster simulation runtime. The basic principles of MMCs are first derived and the topological changes of the PH-MMC are analyzed. Comparisons between the PH-MMC and conventional MMCs are drawn to showcase the advantages and disadvantages of the PH-MMC. Control algorithms are described for basic operation of the PH-MMC, and control block diagrams are detailed to control the sub-module capacitor voltages as well as the AC terminal outputs. A qualitative fault analysis is provided for both AC and DC side faults, and a reduced-order model is developed to accurately model the PH-MMC in electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies by removing the need to model high frequency switching instants. Using a simple network model and a more complex network model, dynamic simulations are performed in PSCADTM/EMTDCTM software to validate the reduced-order model against the full, detailed switching model. Simulation results show that the developed reduced-order model is an accurate representation of the PH-MMC, while significantly decreasing the runtime to carry out such simulations as compared to the detailed model. When incorporating PH-MMCs into larger networks, the reduced-order model developed in this thesis can be used to alleviate the computational burden of using a small time step while maintaining the low frequency behavior of the converter.
