Book Chemical Treatment for Cooling Water

Download or read book Chemical Treatment for Cooling Water written by Alton J. Mathie and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1998 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis clearly illustrates that when all factors are considered, and the right technology is in use, it is just as logical and cost-effective to operate a cooling tower at very high cycles of concentration as it is to use a heavy bleed. Specific topics include water conservation, pollution control requirements, corrosion prevention, management of toxic polluting biocides, and comparison of alternative technologies.

Book Mineral Scale Formation and Inhibition

Download or read book Mineral Scale Formation and Inhibition written by Z. Amjad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the proceedings of the symposium, "Mineral Scale Formation and Inhibition," held at the American Chemical Society Annual Meeting August 21 to 26, 1994, in Washington, D. C. The symposium, sponsored by the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry, was held in honor of Professor George H. Nancollas for his pioneering work in the field of crystal growth from solution. A total of 30 papers were presented by a wide spectrum of scientists. This book also includes papers that were not presented but were in the symposium program. The separation of a solid by crystallization is one of the oldest and perhaps the most frequently used operations in chemistry. Because of its widespread applicability, in recent years there has been considerable interest exhibited by academic and industrial scientists in understanding the mechanisms of crystallization of sparingly soluble salts. The salt systems of great interest in industrial water treatment area (i. e. , cooling and boiler) include carbon ates, sulfates, phosphates, and phosphonates of alkaline earth metals. Although not as common as calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate, barium and strontium sulfates have long plagued oil field and gas production operations. The build-up of these sparingly soluble salts on equipment surfaces results in lower heat transfer efficiency, increased corrosion rates, increased pumping costs, etc. In the laundry application, insoluble calcium carbonate tends to accumulate on washed fabrics and washing equipment parts, resulting in undesirable fabric-encrustation or scaling.

Book Cooling Towers

Download or read book Cooling Towers written by G. B. Hill and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooling Towers: Principles and Practice, Third Edition, aims to provide the reader with a better understanding of the theory and practice, so that installations are correctly designed and operated. As with all branches of engineering, new technology calls for a level of technical knowledge which becomes progressively higher; this new edition seeks to ensure that the principles and practice of cooling towers are set against a background of up-to-date technology. The book is organized into three sections. Section A on cooling tower practice covers topics such as the design and operation of cooling towers; types of cooling tower; cooling tower components and construction materials; practical aspects of tower selection; industrial applications; and water quality and treatment. Section B is devoted to cooling tower theory and calculations. These include psychrometry; heat transfer theory and calculations; calculations when selecting tower size for a given duty; and the use of charts for calculation of cooling tower duties. Section C on data and tables explains the basis of the SI system of units and includes meteorological tables and data as well as data on specific heat capacity of some common substances.

Book Management of Legionella in Water Systems

Download or read book Management of Legionella in Water Systems written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legionnaires' disease, a pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, is the leading cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Legionella occur naturally in water from many different environmental sources, but grow rapidly in the warm, stagnant conditions that can be found in engineered water systems such as cooling towers, building plumbing, and hot tubs. Humans are primarily exposed to Legionella through inhalation of contaminated aerosols into the respiratory system. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, with between 3 and 33 percent of Legionella infections leading to death, and studies show the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the United States increased five-fold from 2000 to 2017. Management of Legionella in Water Systems reviews the state of science on Legionella contamination of water systems, specifically the ecology and diagnosis. This report explores the process of transmission via water systems, quantification, prevention and control, and policy and training issues that affect the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. It also analyzes existing knowledge gaps and recommends research priorities moving forward.
