Book Optimum Cooling of Data Centers

Download or read book Optimum Cooling of Data Centers written by Jun Dai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the use of free air cooling to improve the efficiency of, and cooling of, equipment for use in telecom infrastructures. Discussed at length is the cooling of communication installation rooms such as data centers or base stations, and this is intended as a valuable tool for the people designing and manufacturing key parts of communication networks. This book provides an introduction to current cooling methods used for energy reduction, and also compares present cooling methods in use in the field. The qualification methods and standard reliability assessments are reviewed, and their inability to assess the risks of free air cooling is discussed. The method of identifying the risks associated with free air cooling on equipment performance and reliability is introduced. A novel method of assessment for free air cooling is also proposed that utilizes prognostics and health management (PHM). This book also: Describes how the implementation of free air cooling can save energy for cooling within the telecommunications infrastructure. Analyzes the potential risks and failures of mechanisms possible in the implementation of free air cooling, which benefits manufacturers and equipment designers. Presents prognostics-based assessments to identify and mitigate the risks of telecommunications equipment under free air cooling conditions, which can provide the early warning of equipment failures at operation stage without disturbing the data centers' service. Optimum Cooling for Data Centers is an ideal book for researchers and engineers interested in designing and manufacturing equipment for use in telecom infrastructures.

Book Thermal Management of Electronic Systems

Download or read book Thermal Management of Electronic Systems written by C.J. Hoogendoorn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eurotherm Committee has chosen Thermal Management of Electronic Systems as the subject of its 29th Seminar, at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, 14-16 June 1993. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Seminar. Thermal Management is but one of the several critical topics in the design of electronic systems. However, as a result of the combined effects of increasing heat fluxes, miniaturisation and the striving for zero defects, preferably in less time and at a lower cost than before, thermal management has become an increasingly tough challenge. Therefore, it is being increasingly recognised that cooling requirements could eventually hamper the technical progress in miniaturisation. It might be argued that we are on the verge of a revolution in thermal management techniques. Previously, a packaging engineer had no way of predicting the tempera tures of critical electronic parts with the required accuracy. He or she· had to rely on full-scale experiments, doubtful design rules, or worst-case estimates. This situation is going to be changed in the foreseeable future. User-friendly software tools, the acquisition and integrity of input and output data, the badly needed training mea sures, the introduction into a concurrent engineering environment: all these items will exert a heavy toll on the flexibility of the electronics industries. Fortunately, this situation is being realised at the appropriate management levels, and the interest in this seminar and the pre-conference tutorials testifies to this assertion.

Book Heat Pipes for Computer Cooling Applications

Download or read book Heat Pipes for Computer Cooling Applications written by Mohamed H.A. Elnaggar and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing demand for efficient cooling techniques in computer industry to dissipate the associated heat from the newly designed and developed computer processors to accommodate for their enhanced processing power and faster operations. Such a demand necessitates researchers to explore efficient approaches for central processing unit (CPU) cooling. Consequently, heat pipes can be a viable and promising solution for this challenge. In this chapter, a CPU thermal design power (TDP), cooling methods of electronic equipments, heat pipe theory and operation, heat pipes components, such as the wall material, the wick structure, and the working fluid, are presented. Moreover, we review experimentally, analytically and numerically the types of heat pipes with their applications for electronic cooling in general and the computer cooling in particular. Summary tables that compare the content, methodology, and types of heat pipes are presented. Due to the numerous advantages of the heat pipe in electronic cooling, this chapter definitely leads to further research in computer cooling applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the proceedings of the 3rd Power-Aware Computer Systems (PACS 2003) Workshop held in conjunction with the 36th Annual International Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO-36). The increase in power and - ergy dissipation in computer systems has begun to limit performance and has also resulted in higher cost and lower reliability. The increase also implies - ducedbatterylifeinportablesystems.Becauseofthemagnitudeoftheproblem, alllevelsofcomputersystems, includingcircuits, architectures, andsoftware, are being employed to address power and energy issues. PACS 2003 was the third workshop in its series to explore power- and energy-awareness at all levels of computer systems and brought together experts from academia and industry. These proceedings include 14 research papers, selected from 43 submissions, spanningawidespectrumofareasinpower-awaresystems.Wehavegrouped the papers into the following categories: (1) compilers, (2) embedded systems, (3) microarchitectures, and (4) cache and memory systems. The ?rst paper on compiler techniques proposes pointer reuse analysis that is biased by runtime information (i.e., the targets of pointers are determined based on the likelihood of their occurrence at runtime) to map accesses to ener- e?cient memory access paths (e.g., avoid tag match). Another paper proposes compiling multiple programs together so that disk accesses across the programs can be synchronized to achieve longer sleep times in disks than if the programs are optimized separately.
