This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip to the Orient, the Story of a Mediterranean Cruise "A Trip to the Orient, the Story of a Mediterranean Cruise," by Robert Urie Jacob, has been written at the request of fellow-travelers who did not have time to take notes by the way. One said, "Do not write a guide book nor a love story, but a simple narrative that will recall the incidents and delightful experiences of the tour." Following these suggestions, but with many misgivings, the author has undertaken and completed the work, assisted in the editing and proof-reading by Miss Ruth Collins, of the Drexel Institute, and by Miss Anna C. Kauffman. An interesting feature of the book is the large number of illustrations made from artistic photographs, all of which have been kindly contributed by amateur photographers. Book Reminiscences of a Cruise in the Mediterranean and a Visit to the Holy Land and Egypt Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences of a Cruise in the Mediterranean and a Visit to the Holy Land and Egypt Classic Reprint written by Mrs. W. Lennox Mills and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Cruise in the Mediterranean and a Visit to the Holy Land and Egypt After a delightful voyage of eight days, during which no one could find the least excuse for an attack of' mal de mer, ' we arrived at Funchal, the capital of fair Madeira. It was quite early 1n the morning when our ship dropped anchor, about half a mile from shore; and while dressing, I looked out of the windows of our cabin, and saw a view beautiful beyond de scription. 'mountains, rising one above another, formed a fine background, and there were three high hills, shaped just like bee-hives, with rounded domes, quite unique in appearance. The colouring of the picture was superb blue sea, blue sky, with downy white clouds, bright green h1lls, ' purple shadows, red and grey rocks white houses with red roofs, and a pic turesque old grey fort, crowning the summit of one of the hills. After dressing, and breakfast, we went on deck, and became aware that the sea had suddenly become alive with a flotilla of row boats, in which were fishermen and small boys, who begged and demanded, in loud tones, and with expressive gestures, that the passengers would throw money into the sea, for which they would dive. It is really wonderful how they manage to find the money, although I believe they get it before it reaches the bottom; they have trained the eye so accurately, and never lose sight of the coins from the moment they are flung into the water. After some little delay, the official boats came to take us ashore. To step on terra firma once again, after a sea voyage, is always a delight to me (no matter how pleasant the voyage), and on this occasion it was doubly so, as the land was very beautiful. We were immediately taken possession of by a guide, who showed us different places of interest. We first went t see the Governor's residence, an old-fashioned building with spacious rooms. Madeira is under the Crown of Portugal, and in one of the salons was a fine portrait of the late King of Portugal.' This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grand Winter Excursion to the Mediterranean, the Orient, and the Holy Land: Including the Azores, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Sicily, Egypt, Palestine, Turkey, Greece, Malta, Tunis, and Algeria The graceful "La Touraine," the proud ocean racer of the French Line of steamships, is preparing to leave New York, February 4th next, for a wonderfully attractive trip through Mediterranean waters. This coming notable tour of the great vessel adds interest to a recent visit of inspection which the writer enjoyed. Not that these marvellous marine structures such as "La Touraine" are not in themselves most worthy of a few hours' examination, whether the visitor be one who has undertaken ocean voyages or whether he be a confirmed landlubber. So immense is the establishment, and so varied are the operations for insuring safety and luxury to the passengers of one of the new first-rate ocean steamships, that many voyages might easily be undertaken by a traveller without giving him an entire idea of the splendid workmanship and curious construction of the modern "ocean greyhound." And now that records are being cut down every day in the ocean passage, and people are beginning to talk seriously of a steamship that shall run fifty miles an hour, under pressure of a hundred thousand horse-power from seven hundred pounds of steam, it is particularly fascinating to study the construction of a vessel which represents the last improvements actually put into practice. A Wonder of Symmetry. "La Touraine" is not only remarkable for her hugeness and power. In fact, until certain strong contrasts prove the greatness of her dimensions, one is apt to be misled by the symmetry of her graceful lines into missing a realization of her bulk. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Occident to Orient: A Record of a Nine Months' Tour Through Europe, Egypt, Holy Land, Asia Minor and Greece The prophet Daniel said more than five hundred years be fore Christ, as he looked with the seer's eye into the distant future, Many Shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be in creased. His prophecy is being fulfilled, at least in measure, in our day. Never was there such running to and fro in the world as at the present time, and never was knowledge so largely increased as now. King Solomon said in his day, nearly a thousand years be fore Christ, Of making many books there is no end. Did he live in this day he would repeat the declaration with an em phasis that he could not have given to his words when he wrote them. If he lived now, and contemplated only a single class of books, he would say, Of making many books of travel there is no end. Perhaps he might add, And much study of many of these is a weariness of the esh. We are confident, however, that he would not say this of the little volume which it is now our pleasure to introduce to the reader. The part Of the world traveled by the author of this book, namely, from New York to Glasgow, to London, Paris, across France, through Italy, over the Mediterranean to Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt, then over to Palestine and through the Holy Land, then back to Greece and' across the Continent through Switzerland to London, and again to Scotland and through Ireland, and by the Atlantic to New York, is familiar to travel ers and to a large number Of readers who have perused the vol umes which they have written. On the whole there is no route of travel so interesting and profitable as this. A large number have realized its pleasure and enjoyed its advantages. A much greater number have only had it in their desire, or as a fond dream never to become a reality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
