Book Ava Gardner

Download or read book Ava Gardner written by Ava Gardner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-07-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ava Gardner was one of the most glamorous and famous stars in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s. Her list of films includes The Killers, Showboat and Mogambo, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress, and her co-stars included Clark Gable, Gregory Peck, Burt Lancaster, Humphrey Bogart, Charlton Heston, and Richard Burton - the A-list of male Hollywood stars. Married three times - to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra - the first two lasted only about a year each whilst her marriage to Sinatra lasted several. She had a long-running affair with Howard Hughes, and a briefer one with George C. Scott, among others. In Ava Gardner, she has much to say about her husbands and lovers, and some of her co-stars,all of whom get Gardner's unflinchingly honest treatment. Ava Gardner is irresistibly candid and surprising. She began the book because, as she told Evans, 'it's either write the book or sell the jewels and I'm kinda fond of the jewels.' At the time of their collaboration Gardner was living in London, where she had lived for decades, smoking and drinking heavily. Having suffered a stroke that damaged the left side of her face and her left arm she had trouble sleeping and was often depressed - the glamorous wardrobes replaced by grey. Her story could itself have been depressing except for her wit and wickedness, which are on full display in this book. This book tells the story of her life as she wanted to tell it. Ava Gardner is the autobiography that Ava Gardner began with writer Peter Evans in 1988. She never finished it and decided against publishing it because of its frankness. She later collaborated on a tamer autobiography, which was published at her death in 1990. After Gardner's death, her estate authorised the book to be published much as she and Evans had originally conceived it.

Book Tapping Hitler s Generals

Download or read book Tapping Hitler s Generals written by Sönke Neitzel and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 863 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These transcripts of wiretapped conversations between Nazi officers reveal “a fascinating—and chilling—insight into the German view of the war” (Financial Times). Between 1939 and 1942, the British Directorate of Military Intelligence created a number of POW interrogation camps in and around London where they secretly recorded private conversations between senior German staff officers. In this extraordinary work, historian Sonke Neitzel examines these transcripts in depth and presents the private thoughts, opinions, and secrets of Nazi officers during the Second World War. These transcripts address important questions regarding the officers’ attitudes towards the German leadership and Nazi policies: How did the German generals judge the overall war situation? From what date did they consider it lost? How did they react to the attempt on Hitler’s life in July 1944? What knowledge did they have of the atrocities? By turns insightful and horrifying, this unprecedented research is a must for any serious scholar of the period. “A goldmine of information about what the German High Command privately thought of the war, Adolf Hitler, the Nazis and each other.” —Daily Mail

Book The Best Kept Teaching Secret

Download or read book The Best Kept Teaching Secret written by Harvey Daniels and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your fast-track to student engagement Everywhere Smokey Daniels goes-every school he visits, every workshop he leads, every keynote he gives-there's one teaching strategy that teachers embrace above all others. That single method for transforming students from passive spectators into active learners . . . for evoking curiosity, inspiring critical thinking, and building powerful writers along the way. Now, with Elaine Daniels as Smokey's coauthor, that best-kept teaching secret is revealed to teachers at large: Written Conversations. Just what make Written Conversations so potent? An ongoing, thoughtful correspondence between students, and between students and their teachers, Written Conversations, above all else, catch and ride the wave of social interaction, which in turn makes school matter to kids. It's that simple. Structure by structure, from beginning to end, Smokey and Elaine describe four variations of these "silent writing-to-learn discussions," during which all students in a classroom think and "talk" at once in writing, instead of one at a time out loud. How Written Conversations Work 1.It all starts with mini-memos, short student letters that teachers use to introduce, extend, and assess class work. 2.Then come dialogue journals, where pairs dive deeply into academic subjects. 3.Next, groups of three or four students join in extended written discussions called write-arounds. 4.Finally, kids take their thinking online, where they enjoy digital discussions with partners from their own classroom- and with kids from around the world. . . . all the while, you are supported by detailed descriptions of each structure, lessons, and annotated student samples-making this the most practical teaching book in recent memory. What kid wouldn't want to refine written argument skills, clarify a point, or defend another's viewpoint, when the "audience" is people who matter? And Yes, Written Conversations align with the Common Core Sta

Book Conversations on Love

Download or read book Conversations on Love written by Natasha Lunn and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of love in all its forms, featuring conversations with Lisa Taddeo, Esther Perel, Emily Nagoski, Kate Bowler, Alain de Botton, Stephen Grosz, Roxane Gay and others Journalist Natasha Lunn was almost 30 when she realized that there was no map for understanding love. While she was used to watching friends fall in and out of love, the older she got the more she had to acknowledge: her friends' relationship struggles could no longer be chalked up to youth, and the more she learned about her parents, grandparents, work colleagues, and mentors the clearer it became that age had not brought any of them any closer to understanding this elusive, transformative, consuming emotion. One night during the months she found this realization settling over her, she sat up in bed and jotted three words in a notebook: conversations on love. In that moment, Lunn understood that she didn't want advice about love, she wasn't looking for the answers, or evergreen wisdom but she craved candid, wide-ranging, sometimes uncomfortable conversations about the parts of love that often don't make it into our everyday discussions of marriage, sibling relationships, friendships, or mother/daughter bonds. Conversations on Love started as an experiment aimed at interviewing experts about what love meant to them, in all of it's messiness, and quickly blossomed into a newsletter that attracted thousands of subscribers and a prestigious range of interviewees. It turns out that Lunn wasn't the only person ready to talk more openly and expansively about love. Interweaving personal essays and revealing interviews with some of the most sough-after experts on love, journalist Natasha Lunn guides us through the paradoxical heart of three key questions about love--How do we find love? How do we sustain it? And how do we survive when we lose it?--to deliver a book that is a solace, a beacon, a call to arms, a tool-kit. The real-life love stories in these pages will leave you hopeful and validated, while the insights from experts will transform the way you think about your relationships. Above all, Conversations on Love will remind you what love is: fragile, sturdy, mundane, beautiful, always worth fighting for.

Book Hitler s Wartime Conversations

Download or read book Hitler s Wartime Conversations written by Bob Carruthers and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 813 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare glimpse into the mind of the Nazi leader, as recorded by his personal secretary. Much of the documentation surrounding Adolf Hitler was lost or deliberately destroyed in the chaos of World War II’s end. Yet some records were preserved for history. After dinner at the Wolf’s Lair, it was Hitler’s custom to retire to his private quarters, where he and his entourage often listened to gramophone records of Beethoven symphonies or selections from Wagner as Hitler would hold forth with lengthy and rambling monologues touching on a wide variety of subjects. It was Martin Bormann who decided to commission a recording of Hitler’s words for posterity. Ranging from1941 to 1944, these conversations touch upon a wide range of subjects, with statements both shocking and mundane—providing a unique up-close look at the mind and personality of this still-enigmatic twentieth-century figure.

Download or read book The Bonjour Effect written by Julie Barlow and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Benoît Nadeau and Julie Barlow spent a decade traveling back and forth to Paris as well as living there. Yet one important lesson never seemed to sink in: how to communicate comfortably with the French, even when you speak their language. In The Bonjour Effect Jean-Benoît and Julie chronicle the lessons they learned after they returned to France to live, for a year, with their twin daughters. They offer up all the lessons they learned and explain, in a book as fizzy as a bottle of the finest French champagne, the most important aspect of all: the French don't communicate, they converse. To understand and speak French well, one must understand that French conversation runs on a set of rules that go to the heart of French culture. Why do the French like talking about "the decline of France"? Why does broaching a subject like money end all discussion? Why do the French become so aroused debating the merits and qualities of their own language? Through encounters with school principals, city hall civil servants, gas company employees, old friends and business acquaintances, Julie and Jean-Benoît explain why, culturally and historically, conversation with the French is not about communicating or being nice. It's about being interesting. After reading The Bonjour Effect, even readers with a modicum of French language ability will be able to hold their own the next time they step into a bistro on the Left Bank.

Book The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert

Download or read book The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert written by Rosaria Champagne Butterfield and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rosaria, by the standards of many, was living a very good life. She had a tenured position at a large university in a field for which she cared deeply. She owned two homes with her partner, in which they provided hospitality to students and activists that were looking to make a difference in the world. In the community, Rosaria was involved in volunteer work. At the university, she was a respected advisor of students and her department's curriculum. And then, in her late 30s, Rosaria encountered something that turned her world upside down -- the idea that Christianity, a religion that she had regarded as problematic and sometimes downright damaging, might be right about who God was. That idea seemed to fly in the face of the people and causes that she most loved. What follows is a story of what she describes as a train wreck at the hand of the supernatural. These are her secret thoughts about those events, written as only a reflective English professor could."--Back cover.
