Book De Quincey s Romanticism

Download or read book De Quincey s Romanticism written by Margaret Russett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-12-04 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Russett uses the example of Thomas De Quincey, the nineteenth-century essayist best remembered for his Confessions of an English Opium-Eater and his memoirs of Wordsworth and Coleridge, to examine the idea of the 'minor' author, and how it is related to what we now call the Romantic canon. The case of De Quincey, neither a canonical figure nor a disenfranchised marginal author, offers a point of access to specifically Romantic problems of literary transmission and periodization. Taking an intertextual approach, Russett situates De Quincey's career against the works of Wordsworth and Coleridge; the essays of Lamb, Hazlitt, and other writers for the London Magazine; and discourses of ethics and political economy which are central to the problem of determining literary value. De Quincey's Romanticism shows how De Quincey helped to shape the canon by which his career was defined.

Book Wordsworth s Revisionary Aesthetics

Download or read book Wordsworth s Revisionary Aesthetics written by Theresa M. Kelley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-03-31 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fresh understanding of the role of aesthetics in Wordsworth's major poetry and prose. Arguing that Wordsworth presents sublimity and beauty as strata in the mind's aesthetic retrieval, Professor Kelley's 1988 text proposes geological precedents for this aesthetic model and evaluates its differences from the models developed by Burke, Kant and Hegel. This study sheds light on Wordworth and Romanticism in several ways. It establishes key differences between his aesthetics and that of Burke, Kant and other predecessors; it offers an insightful understanding of the aesthetic nature of Wordsworth's poetic achievement; and it grounds its close, rhetorical analysis of texts and figures in relevant historical and political contexts.

Book Napoleon and English Romanticism

Download or read book Napoleon and English Romanticism written by Simon Bainbridge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-11-24 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon Bonaparte occupied a central place in the consciousness of many British writers of the Romantic period. He was a profound shaping influence on their thinking and writing, and a powerful symbolic and mythic figure whom they used to legitimize and discredit a wide range of political and aesthetic positions. In this first ever full-length study of Romantic writers' obsession with Napoleon, Simon Bainbridge focuses on the writings of the Lake poets Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey, and of Byron and Hazlitt. Combining detailed analyses of specific texts with broader historical and theoretical approaches, and illustrating his argument with the visual evidence of contemporary cartoons, Bainbridge shows how Romantic writers constructed, appropriated, and contested different Napoleons as a crucial part of their sustained and partisan engagement in the political and cultural debates of the day.

Book excerpt: “Romantik. Journal for the Study of Romanticisms” is a multidisciplinary journal dedicated to the study of romantic-era cultural productions and concepts. The journal promotes innovative research across disciplinary borders. It aims to advance new historical discoveries, forward-looking theoretical insights and cutting-edge methodological approaches. The articles range over the full variety of cultural practices, including the written word, visual arts, history, philosophy, religion, and theatre during the romantic period (c. 1780–1840). But contributions to the discussion of pre- or post-romantic representations are also welcome. Since the romantic era was characterized by an emphasis on the vernacular, the title of journal has been chosen to reflect the Germanic root of the word. But the journal is interested in all European romanticisms – and not least the connections and disconnections between them – hence, the use of the plural in the subtitle. Romantik is a peer-reviewed journal supported by the Nordic Board for Periodicals in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOP-HS).
