Book Hydrologic Aspects of On Site Retention Systems for Urban Storm Runoff Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hydrologic Aspects of On Site Retention Systems for Urban Storm Runoff Classic Reprint written by Nagendra Khanal and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydrologic Aspects of on-Site Retention Systems for Urban Storm Runoff The solution to the flood protection problem in these cases has taken on an added dimension in the past year as a consequence of the Federal Flood Insurance program. In those communities and local jurisdictions which have accepted the program, the one-in-one-hundred year frequency storm event flood stage becomes the criterion for establishing floor elevations for convention ally designed buildings. The combination of fill at the building site and retention (soil storage plus retention ponds plus floodable open space) must be sufficient to keep the one-in-one-hundred year flood stage below the first floor elevation of homesites. Book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States

Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Book Advances in Urban Stormwater and Agricultural Runoff Source Controls

Download or read book Advances in Urban Stormwater and Agricultural Runoff Source Controls written by J. Marsalek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding past achievements, flood damage continues to rise throughout the world as the magnitudes of floods increase, partly as a result of poor land management and partly by climate change, growing populations and continuing development in flood-prone areas, and the aging and deterioration of flood defences. One of the major goals of water management is the protection of society from floods. That issue is addressed here in terms of such broad issues as flood analysis, flood impact, non-structural and structural flood management measures. Non-structural measures focus on flood plain management, flood insurance, flood forecasting and warning, and emergency measures during floods. Structural measures focus on catchment management, embankments and flood reservoirs. Post-flood measures are also discussed. Future planning of flood management should be based on a clear understanding of the effectiveness interventions and their impacts on river catchment ecosystems.
